Alternate Daily recharge mechanics / power source

I've recently been thinking of ways to distinguish the power sources a little bit through how their daily powers recharge. Here are some ideas: Martial Exploits - These depend on the situation being set up perfectly for their use. This situation comes up roughly every 3 encounters. * After...

Grabbing the side of a cliff

I completely missed that one. I haven't read over climbing in a while. That seems to be pretty close to what I wanted. Thanks. Well, they were jumping from a hanging platform above water with a slight current, so no bracing himself and he would've had to swim for a square, but that trivia...

Grabbing the side of a cliff

The game situation it developed out of was the Paladin missing a 1 square jump over a 6 square drop. He could've taken the damage, but it would've taken 4 (?) rounds for him to get back into things. So I ruled that he could grab the side of the cliff, but he would grant combat advantage and...

Grabbing the side of a cliff

By the RAW, forced movement over a cliff allows the creature make a save to not fall and instead fall prone in the last safe square. So that I can use dramatically high cliffs without the danger of removing a PC from a fight, I'm proposing a house rule that a creature that is forced over a...

How have you used terrain to make combat more tactically interesting & exciting?

Cool maps. Sounds & looks like a fun one. Thanks for posting these. Great idea, and I'll yoink it myself. Add in a few pivoting mirrors to redirect sunlight to really give the PCs some battlefield control. I've always wanted to try something like that.

How have you used terrain to make combat more tactically interesting & exciting?

I'd love to see your map for this. Sounds like an amazing encounter. My best homebrewed encounter so far was a simple one using a narrowing valley, lots of deep snow, snow-covered pit traps, and some monsters that weren't affected by the snowy terrain. I wrote it up a while ago in the thread...

    Fixing Sacred Circle

This is the core of the disagreement. I see it as a Level 2 Utility power vs. a Level 2 Utility power, both taken by the class to which the power belongs. To me, a side power is something you'd get as part of a package (e.g. when you first choose your class or race and get a bunch of powers...

    Fixing Sacred Circle

Agreed. So the glowing circle of runes on the ground is someplace you want to be, even if the cleric's shield of faith is active.

    Fixing Sacred Circle

All of the above? I'm certainly enjoying the discussion, even if it has evolved a little bit beyond what I originally had in mind. I've certainly learned a bit, and there have been a number of interesting ways proposed of solving the issue. Anyway, I really like Nifft's idea of boosting the...

    Any level 1-5 plant critters?

Actually, reskinning the Needlefang Drake Swarm would work even better, since they have the pull down effect.

    Any level 1-5 plant critters?

How about reskinning a Rat Swarm to be dozens of rapidly growing animated thorned vines? Only the tips of the vines are deadly, which explains why the area they've grown over (moved through and now outside the aura) is safe to move in.

    Fixing Sacred Circle

True, this is a possibility, but the Cleric's power is always tactically better than the Paladin's. There's no opportunity for the Paladin to be the hero, and other utility powers allow for that (even if it's out of combat). It's always going to be: is this encounter tough enough to warrant...

    Fixing Sacred Circle

At least it only takes a minor action. And it's at-will (sortof). And there are situations in which both might be needed and the Paladin won't feel like he wasted his action. (And I've already come into a situation where one PC was out of surges and the Paladin used Lay on Hands to good...

    Fixing Sacred Circle

Unfortunately I do have a cleric and a paladin, and they chose those two powers, each thinking it was good. And they are concerned that the cleric's will make the paladin's useless in every (non-contrived) situation. Consider other comparable level 2 utility powers: Tumble (Rogue) vs...

    Fixing Sacred Circle

I don't think that powers need to be equal in power level, and I'd been fine if they were comparable depending on the situation. But I think it's an extremely contrived situation that makes the paladin's power better: 1) the party is more than 5 squares from the Cleric 2) the Paladin decides...

    Fixing Sacred Circle

Interesting. I had noticed the Implement keyword, but thought it was probably a cut-and-paste error. I don't think I'll go with that solution though, since it would make the cleric's power fairly trivial at high levels.

    Fixing Sacred Circle

The PCs in my campaign just hit level 2 and are choosing utility powers. The Paladin wanted Sacred Circle, but it doesn't seem to offer a single advantage over the Cleric's Shield of Faith, and they don't even stack. Shield of Faith: bigger burst, bigger bonus, bonus stays with allies affected...

Minions - do you tell players who are minions and who are not in-game?

I announced it after a player wanted to use his daily on the kobold minion he was facing. I think I said something along the lines of "Your keen combat senses tell you this would be extreme overkill." And everyone laughed and I don't think it decreased the enjoyment of it. So at least for...
