    Playing Apparent Losers

I have never intentionally made a "pathetic" character. Flawed characters can be great fun, but lousy ones - especially in a game as team-oriented as D&D has always been - are, well, lousy. (One of the reasons I like 4e: it's very hard to make any more one-trick-pony characters that are good at...

Forked Thread: Overshadowed by Elminster? Yes! And happy for it!

A game of playing Archie(s) to a NPC Nero Wolfe sounds like a cool idea; like you've said, it needs everyone to know beforehand what's going on, and be happy with it, but that goes with most games anyway. :) I vaguely recall someone on the RPG.net forums suggesting a similar game in the vein of...

    Overshadowed by Elminster?

Having your characters overshadowed by Elminster, or Drizzt, or Mordenkainen, or any other "big name" NPC is a frequent complaint, but how often does it actually happen? In the time I've been gaming, I've never run into a DM using canon NPCs to overshadow, overwhelm or outstrip the PCs, nor...

    Forgotten Realms "Canon Lawyers"

Pet peeve: No, it's not. Frequently, author avatars (let alone self-inserts) are Mary Sues, but it's not automatic at all. The best definition of a Mary Sue I've seen, and which I stick to, is that they're like black holes: their presence warps everything to be about them. Elminster, in the...

When is a campaign setting no longer relevant?

Not to mention the additions of an underworld of the dead, and a fairy world.

AD&D 1E What was the reason for Demihuman level and class limits in AD&D?

Your ideas are intriguing, but I'm pretty sure they have nothing to do with what Gygax and others were doing, back in the day. At least nothing in the posts of Old Geezer on RPG.net (one of Gary's friends and original players) implies anything like this.

    2010: Is it Dragonlance? (hint)

Because the draconians have been established by DL as very specific, color-coded evil creatures. They are one of the most iconic parts of that particular setting, and they don't really resemble dragonborn more than superficially. As for Dragonlance as the next setting... eh. I like the...

"HF" vs. "S&S" gaming: the underlying reason of conflict and change in D&D

That depends. I agree that hardcore SF fans and SF authors may find Lensman a definitive Space Opera work, but for the average SF fan, Star Wars beats it handily by being current and much, much better known.

Magic Items that lost their magic

I'm not sure if they were all that more "magical" in 1e, either. As far as I can tell, a great part of what people want when they complain about magic and/or magic items being "not magical" is unpredictability, and not knowing what something is or what it can do. This is a tricky thing to want...

    What's so special about Dragonlance?

For me, the really unique thing about Dragonlance was how they took alignment and made it an important, even central aspect of the whole setting. The wizards of High Sorcery are divided by alignment, yet all united; the gods form three pantheons based on their location on the...

What's so special about Forgotten Realms?

Problem was, the detail was getting choking for new players and especially DMs. 3e FRCS was and is one of the best D&D books ever, but it's absolutely crammed full of stuff about the world. I think that some slate-clearing was necessary anyway, and with FR's history of Grand Sweeping...

OOTS 652: No Respect for the Wicked

Well, Redcloack is the high priest of an evil deity, and Xykon's an epic-level lich. IMO, they're among the people who would most plausibly know about things like soul splices.

The new Star Trek movie is...

NGAAAAAAARGH! It's Khan, not "Kahn"! This misspelling seems to be everywhere recently, and it's making me tear my hair out. Khan, Khan, KHAAAAAAAAAAAN! (Nothing personal with you, Pbartender; your post was just the straw that made my cup run over. ;) )

Rate the new Star Trek Film

I'm hoping they're using the "wrap around" thing as an excuse to finally fix transporters from "disintegrate-project-integrate" model to some sort of displacement thing. The former only leads to giant cans of worms and bad technobabble-driven plots.

OOTS 652: No Respect for the Wicked

Vaarsuvius' problem is that although they are obviously tremendously intelligent, they aren't particularly smart. I wonder if Rich is using V to poke fun at / criticize the type of player who thinks that having big spells means you're invincible, and don't bother to plan or think things over?

Rate the new Star Trek Film

My vote's on "Excellent!", and I'm not much of a ST fan overall (SW is more my thing). If they can maintain the quality and the energy, I'm definitely looking towards more movies in this vein. :)

Ratio of male:female gamers (was forked "DDM: Chicks not in chainmail")

In our group, two women (the GM and one player) out of six in total, so 33%.

Your Astral Sea: 3d or 2d?

2d, with 3d effects. (Going 3d without rules specifically intended for it is just too much trouble for too little genuine effect. Especially if you don't have ground limiting the movement space on one side, and no gravity.)

Ouch! Sounds like a tough night. I assume you didn't start poking around further at the tower. :-)

New Forgotten Realms designed by FR haters?

And a great thing, too. Never liked the "real-world" gods in FR, with Tyr and Mielikki as the two big offenders (and, of course, the whole Egyptian pantheon in Mulhorand...). Torm does the job much better, I think, and he's a FR deity from the start. :)
