D&D 4E What has you excited about 4e?

The things I'm liking the best, so far at least, are the following: * Wizards' implements (I'm hoping for the death of material components...) * Races affecting you meaningfully throughout your adventuring career. * All classes having at-will, per-encounter and per-day abilities. * The class...

D&D 4E What will be your 4e setting?

I'm thinking of a homebrew campaign as the first one; maybe Eberron once WotC comes out with the 4e version.

    An end to scry-buff-teleport?

After the party wizard learned Greater Teleport, all the time. And why not? It's a brilliantly useful tactic; it just gives the DM ulcers and turns the game into five-minute forays out of warded lairs.

    Facing

Facing, like weapon speeds, is one of those neat and obvious ideas that turn out to suffer from all matter of non-obvious problems in practice. I'm all for the current, abstracted facing; flanking, feinting and so on work quite well enough, without need for more complexity.

How Come There Is No "Wish" Spell?

Wish has a long and flavorful history, and I'm a bit sad to see it go; however, I think it is for the better. The spell has always been troublesome to adjudicate, what with its "do anything" flavor, and the frequent player-DM antagonism it has caused. I remember how, back when playing the blue...

    D&D 4E Magics Items in 4E

How about having ability-boosting items which do not just give a plain +x all the time, but instead give you a temporary boost when you need (or think you need) it? Or items which for example give you some strength-related advantage when used or worn, but not just a +x.

    New Design and Development: Pantheon

And, like the snake-cult of Set, had nothing to do with the real Mithraism. Howard wanted cool and evocative names he could build his worlds around, not realism or historical accuracy. :) As for Tiamat, making her a CE opposite of Bahamut and a patron goddess of rapacious greed, vanity and...

Why Shouldn't Martial Characters have powers?

I'm all for powers for high-level fighters and other martial characters. In 1e and 2e, a high-level fighter had basically one thing to do, in combat or outside it: go up to a critter, and whale at it with a sword. This becomes immensely boring, when compared to the stuff all the other classes...

    D&D 4E What's Wrong With 4e Simply Put

Suit yourself. I will repeat what I said earlier, though: those five tribes are each much broader than the tribes in WtA, and as they're something you choose, instead of being born into, are less restrictive. Blood Talons have not, to the best of my understanding, "turned on the other four"...

Honey, I Shrunk the Monster Manual!

Just curious: what, if any, evidence you have that this might even be considered?

One last name poll: Warlord vs Marshal

You're not the only one. (Although I like the name, too.)

    D&D 4E What's Wrong With 4e Simply Put

You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but it's something I definitely do not share. In fact, apart from the new Mage, most gamers I've spoken with have found the nWoD books as good as or better than most of the oWoD. Certainly WtF's take of werewolves as creatures neither wholly men nor...

    D&D 4E What's Wrong With 4e Simply Put

What you're seeing is in the eye of the beholder. Also: if you already have bookcases full of D&D books, this tells me that youre either the sort of guy who happily buys new and not-sucky (A)D&D stuff even though it overlaps and replicates the stuff you already own, in which case you (in the...

Infernal pacts - appropriate for player characters?

You're correct; it's "feral" and not "fey". That was my mistake. Still, I'm strongly assuming it's linked to the Feywild and the fey, just as the shadow pact is likely to be linked to Shadowfell. As for the implications, I'm seeing "feral" as chaotic neutral, wild, unfettered, occasionally...

    D&D 4E Alignment hint about 4E...or not?

Possibly mildly off topic, but I really, really wish that if 4e retains alignments, the designers put the following text in big, bold lettering in the section discussing it: "YOUR ACTIONS DETERMINE YOUR ALIGNMENT, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND." I swear that half the alignment complaints I see are...

    So...this is the new Ettercap?:(

Here's a link to a GW gallery of dryads. Of course, those are dryads on the battlefield, angry about someone intruding into their home forest; a calm and relaxed dryad might be much less creepy-looking.

Infernal pacts - appropriate for player characters?

I disagree with you about the "perfect heroes" during the cold war, but agree about the boringness of that kind of characters. This doesn't mean I oppose heroes or heroism, quite the opposite. In my opinion, a character without any dark shades, moral doubts, weak spots etc. cheapens the value of...

    Let Warlord be Warlord

I foresee that if WotC did that, 90% of the people up in arms over the warlord would spontaneously combust from incandescent nerd rage.

Another name for the Warlord: Ayran

Actually, the WotC people have agreed that the best word is Warlord. ;)

D&D 4E 4e, minis... and some of my thoughts

Counters, sketches on the battlemat / whiteboard / sheets of paper, or just a bunch of people who somehow manage to keep the entire situation in their heads? Miniatures are not required for anything. Heck, I could quite easily play the various GW miniatures wargames with nothing but cardboard...
