Warrior-Mage Prestige Classes: which are viable & which are not

Malhavoc Press has fighter feats that allow said fighter to use maigc effects without actually taking caster levels. Some are very video-gamey, but their still damned effective.

Warrior-Mage Prestige Classes: which are viable & which are not

Define rocks. What are other examples of fighter-mages in your campaign worlds history? A fighter that comes with his own buffs can rock as a fighter. A Sorcerer with a few ranged based feats can rock as a sorcerer. Jedi didn't throw fireballs (with any regularity). Gandalf TWF'd with a staff...

Warrior-Mage Prestige Classes: which are viable & which are not

Might not help, but I'll throw in some 3rd party PrC's I've liked. Green Steel Monk: Green Ronin -A sect of monks that believe becoming a demon is the path of perfection. Gains some minor spellcasting. No caster levels required. Wyrd: HoHF: Half Orcs -a barbarian/sorcerer hybrid. Gains...

Warrior-Mage Prestige Classes: which are viable & which are not

Right, but this isn't a professional sport. There isn't much point to min-maxing if the only reward is bragging rights ('My character is statistaically better than yours!!!).

Where PCs buy & sell magic items

Scrolls can be found fairly regularly amongst fellow spellcasters (not nessecarily cheaply though). Think of it as scientists writing papers for others to analyse. The constant exposure improves the art overall. Other items are on commission, and I've been using the IK magic item rules...

Do your PCs spend money on non adventureing things?

Our current group leader is looking to purchase a fort or some other base of operations. The mechanic is constantly looking for parts, almost never buying adventuring gear. Our fighter is lloking to create a weapons collection, willingly buying 'subpar' or antique weapons simply to have them...

Toughness - How many hit points to make it worthwhile?

Haven't replaced it, but other players have taken the initiative.

    Anti-first-round-nuke feats

They seem awfully powerful for feats, even with the one time bonus. If it helps, I prefer the Quint Halflings 'Take Cover!' feat. Prereqs are alertness and dodge. If you're within 10 ft of decent cover, you gain evasion (or inproved evasion if you already have it).

    The Biowarrior

Seems very similar to Goodman Game's Protean warrior. It was only a 10 level PrC, but you had to be a doppelganger or similar critter to use it.

What do you do for... Bards?

FFG's Path of Magic has some very nice alternatives to the bardic singing (ranged whilwind attack anyone? How's about giving flanking bonuses against all enemies withon 15 feet...). These also add additional abilities for buffing or dampening other spellcasters. The choir can make for a damned...

    Horses at high level?

Green Ronin has templates for improved mounts, but they aren't going to survive higher levels. Second World Simulations 'Masters at Arms' book has the Alpha Beast PrC. It's described as a fighter class for animals.

    Should I Ban Tanglefoot Bags?

I wouldn't ban them. Gives the casters a reason to fear the non-casters. IRL, we've been experimenting with our own variations for years. 'BOW DOWN BEFORE THE GODLY MIGHT OF BELNAR THE ALL...' thawck; splat 'Aw crap...'

    "Backup" Plans when DMs Flake

I Dm at the local gaming store. If I don't show up, they play another players IK campaign. Now I just have to convince him to play it while I'm actually there...

    No multiclassing penalties?

I allow players to purchase feats and skills with exp. points. Controlling that is bad enough (I need these six feats! Where can I find a teacher!). Watching my powergamer min-max with that would have given me a heart attack.

    Muay Thai Monk

Use the fighter. Get the Improved IMPROVED Unarmed Combat feat from Bo9S. Use the Iron Leg feat from Kingdom of Kalamar's Stealth and Style (among other goodies, it doubles your str damage to any attack delivered with the legs). Look into OA for the unarmed combat feats. Use the verastile feat...

    Dealing with powergamers

I watch this one. If your player always uses the rules to keep you in check, this will cause no end of issues. I've warned my players ahead of time that 'things aren't always what you expect. If you want, I'll explain the rationale after the encounter'. It's worked well so far. No complaints...
