Is RAISE DEAD (etc.) too readily available in most D&D campaigns?

Did he die, or just come really close to death (stabilizing)? Did his party go to a cleric, or did some creature with magic beyond the human norm give him help?

    Gestalt Characters

Currently running a mixed gestalt campaign. 6 members, basic gestalting rules with the ceveat that PrC's that mix two classes count as both sides for level advancement. Same with certain classes (Goodman game's Fey classes are too powerful to let gestalt). Typical NPC's have an NPC class...

If a weapon were enchanted as per animate rope... (old thread)

Given that the item was a random roll christmas deal (and he hasn't used it yet), there's a bit of leyway as to how it can be applied. Folding the chain over 4 times gives a roughly 15 foot reach, for example (makes for a wide bladed longsword, but the weapons did vary). I'm wondering if...

Is RAISE DEAD (etc.) too readily available in most D&D campaigns?

Not sure about Conan, but Gandalf's raising was divine intervention without the use of a cleric. A near impossible story effecting event. Other members of the fellowship who died didn't get that option. Can you imagine how the story would have turned out if Aragorn had said the newly white mage...

Is RAISE DEAD (etc.) too readily available in most D&D campaigns?

Plenty of risks. The party is still suffereing from a botched gather info check directed at sensitive information. The party leaders father had to shut down plans he had going for centuries. They now have to deal with an 'apologies' quest to regain dad's trust (a 4 day random roll romp through...

If a weapon were enchanted as per animate rope... (old thread)

Might have to tone this down, but definitely usable. DOn't want everyone buying a chaper animated chain to turn into funky weapons. :)

If a weapon were enchanted as per animate rope... (old thread)

We have stats for the weapon from En World's Whip Pdf. Just need ideas as to how he'd us it.

Is RAISE DEAD (etc.) too readily available in most D&D campaigns?

It doesn't seem to. Upping the odds has tended to make memorable games for everyone all around. The ones that don't like it also tend to be power gamers less interested in the story, more interested in getting mechanical advantage. Just my experience. YMMV. Last thing I want tot here in my game...

Is RAISE DEAD (etc.) too readily available in most D&D campaigns?

It's not the same at all. You get one 'get out of jail free' roll. Just one. When you die, roll a d20. That's how many hit points you have left. Use it to get out of dodge or die for real. The 'god roll' has several other uses, so if you rolled to improve your odds somewhere earlier in the...

Is RAISE DEAD (etc.) too readily available in most D&D campaigns?

Why? The best stories and memories of the game come from situations where the character might not come back.

If a weapon were enchanted as per animate rope... (old thread)

One of our players random rolled a rope of climbing for christmas. We rules that is was more like fine chain than hemp. Now he's looking to have blades linkes added to it, converting it to a sword whip ala Soul Caliber (see En World Publishing's Whips). How could he use this in combat?

Is RAISE DEAD (etc.) too readily available in most D&D campaigns?

Then there's no risk, no heroic endeavor. What's the point of facing BBEG's or ending a campaign on that final telling adventure if your players say 'meh... Make sure to bring you bring a few diamoonds, just in case...'? YMMV

    Non-Boring Cleric Ideas

Need to know the clerics domains. Ours currently uses Luck and Fate (third party domain that allows you to force re-rolled for others). He effectively worships luck, using spells and domain abilities to carry him through. Rather annoying, as villians have had to re-roll natural 20's when he's in...

What DO you DO for... Monks?

-Monks: Get to deflect Arrows using AoO's instead of once per round. During Total Defense they get a 30% miss chance vs all ranged attacks they can see coming. The can later purchase a feat that doubles their number of Deflect Arrows and increases the miss chance to 50%. NOTE: In our campaign...

Is RAISE DEAD (etc.) too readily available in most D&D campaigns?

For some players it shouldn't be expensive and difficult; it should be near impossible. Getting a new car or remodelling a house is expensive and difficult. Coming back from the dead should go beyond that.

Is RAISE DEAD (etc.) too readily available in most D&D campaigns?

Depends on your POV. Far as I'm concerned (and this is jmo), death shouldn't be a 'lose 5,000 exp and a level; start again'. The whole point of heros being heros is they risk and beat the odds. Buying a raise dead or supporting a cleric means no real risk, especially for those games that hand...

Is RAISE DEAD (etc.) too readily available in most D&D campaigns?

I want death to be a real factor in my campaign, not a speed bump for the adventure. As a whole, clerics have to make Will saves to cast spells. On the flip side, I've used god roll rules (kind of like get out of jail free cards, once per game day) that the players can use to stay alive that...

My players cringe wildly on a 6. I don't need 20 year olds going into cardiac arrest.

    Is Diplomacy Worth It?

Our teams designated leader uses it numerous times. He has political and noble ties, so having ranks in that skill makes survival much easier. Then again, I use 3rd party black market rules. Tends to make it exceptionally useful if you want to buy restricted or rare items.
