    Making Permanency more... Permament

Not that this would necessarily help, but we house-ruled permanency to create a 'true' permanent effect, so it is only suppressed for 1d4+1 rounds rather than completely gone if dispelled. On the other hand, a lower-level caster with a good roll can still suppress the effect, and we bumped up...

Is the Greatsword the ultimate weapon?

My Barbarian/Ranger uses a Longspear - reasonable damage per hit, and over the course of the campaign has probably dealt more damage due to attacks of opportunity and the occasional set vs charge than he would have with a greatsword.

    Help with starting low-magic campaign?

Ylis - when I say 'spellcasting classes only every second level' I'm not suggesting that casters level up at half the rate, but that they are forced to multiclass with non-caster classes because they can only level up in a spellcasting class every second level (so it's not as if a 6th level...

    Broken item for grappling monk

The general formula for twice the bonus is (2^2)* the cost - so 60,000 if it were a standard item, or 600,000 if it were Epic (10* cost again if the item provides Epic-level bonuses.) You might pick a price somewhere between the two (e.g. the arithmetic mean, which is 330,000 or the geometric...

    Broken item for grappling monk

Remember that for Epic items the market cost is multiplied by 10. So if the Gloves of Fearsome Grip are 15,000 (I can't remember the figure and IDHTBIFOMRN) then an Epic item that provided 3x the bonus would have a market price of (3^2) * 15,000 * 10 = 1,350,000. If the character is built...

    Help with starting low-magic campaign?

Thanks Iron_Chef ... hadn't really thought about running a Hyperborian campaign, although it could be fun ... BTW the link you gave me is down - I don't know if it's a temporary server thing, I'll try again in the morning.

"sleeper" spells you didn't realize were so good

Hadn't realised the power of sending for keeping the party in communication with connections and sources of information, who can be in far-off lands and still kept in perfect contact.

    Help with starting low-magic campaign?

Thanks, that definitely gives me a few more starting ideas. I was tending more towards a 'weak and scarce' approach myself - one where spells, magic items and mentors would all be difficult to find, and the level of magic thrown around by both PCs and NPCs less.

    Wonderful :rolls eyes:

I think Wulf makes an excellent point here. Just because a character can take someone on as an apprentice and have something to teach them, doesn't necessarily mean he's of higher level. Couldn't a 2nd level fighter 'apprentice' himself to a 3rd level wizard and become a 2/1 fighter/wizard...

    Help with starting low-magic campaign?

I've decided to try starting a low-magic campaign, as an experiment to give the party a different kind of experience to the usual. It will be a small party (2-3 players) I thought I might start with the 'spellcasting classes only every second level' (which I remember reading as an idea here...

Spiked chain + Imp. Trip + Combat Reflexes + Enlarge Person

Now that you get AoOs for opponents whom you have tripped standing up or crawling away, I think that giving +4 to Trip checks and a free attack for Improved Trip is completely unreasonable. Either give the +4 bonus - you'll effectively get the extra attack as an AoO anyway; or give the free...

Need 3rd level spell for 6th level Sorceror

Given you already have the Point Blank and Precise Shot Feats, I would personally have gone with Ray of Exhaustion. Hit a creature and it's basically hors de combat if it fails a save, and at a significant disadvantage (-2 to everything) even if it saves. And even if it saves, it can't run or...

    D&D 3.x Please Rate Improved Overrun 3.5

Hmmm... charge/overrun was a tactic I used to use a lot with my Living Greyhawk barbarian character - I didn't realise 3.5 had destroyed it. So - if you can't overrun during a charge to let you charge down the back-rank big bad, is there really much point to overrunning at all (let alon...

What did you do during TSR's dark days of '97

I was out of the game by then too. Skipped 2E, played a couple of years of Magic '94-'95, back into DnD with 3e. Sounds like it isn't an unusual progression....

    Wall of Thorns

I have to agree that WoT can be vastly overpowered if you don't have it provide cover. Throwing Fireball shouldn't work (but the Cloudkill should, and that was good thinking on the part of your players....) I probably wouldn't bother giving it hit points, breaking through it is represented by...

Certain types of armor are never worn.

The current armour table lists armour that covers a number of eras historically and a number of regions geographically. In most locations in most eras only a few of the DnD armour types would have been represented. Restricted availability is the key. In the character's starting region maybe...

Thank you all for your replies, they are much appreciated. I now have a good starting point and will delve into the FRCS armed with your suggestions!

Any FR experts able to help with setting question?

I am about to DM the 'classic' A1-A4 Slavers' campaign, but would like to transplant it to the Forgotten Realms. I own FRCS but haven't played/DMed much in the Realms, so would really appreciate any advice on where in Faerun to place the modules (my initial thought was possibly the Sword...

    D&D 3.x 3.5 quicken spell & Sorcerer

I remember reading that the 3.0 designers had originally intended allowing Sorcerors to take 'already-metamagiced' spells as known spells, so for example a sorceror could take an empowered flaming sphere as a fourth level known spell. It was dropped as I understand it 'for simplicity's sake'...
