D&D 5E (2024) Wrapping up first 2-20 2024 campaign this week, some of my thoughts

Well, high level D&D has always been wonky and unbalanced. From personal experience, either PCs mop the floor, or they get moped. It's art to make encounter at that levels without making it initiative rocket tag or long grinding slog fest. And to be fair, most adventures, particularly high...

    New generic contemporary/urban fantasy?

Mage is good, but only if you really want to center it around mages and wanna deep dive into complex system of magic. Core nWoD (or CoD as they call it now) rulebook is better for general urban fantasy. I listed above some of the supplements, but one other that's solid is Second sight. It...

D&D General What would your "fourth core rulebook" be?

4th book should be something like "Gamebuilder's toolkit- how to homebrew". Optional rules, guidlines for crating custom classes, subclasses, monsters, spells, items, settings. Something for people with firm grasp of mechanics, will and creativity to do a bit of homebrewing.

Worlds of Design: A Pretty High Price

If i'm buying physical rpg book, i'm buying it exclusively as an art book that won't be used in game. I'll flip trough, admire nice art and put it on the shelf to look pretty. For actual game use, i prefer bare bones, tech manual style and digital format that is at bare minimum, searchable with...

How many were abused due to their love of D&D, RPGs, and related items when they were young?

Yea, rugby guys are tough mofos. For some reason, most of people that liked geeky stuff in HS were also into martial arts and combat sports (kick box ,judo, wrestling). Trying to bully someone with early onset of cauliflower ears isn't smartest idea. Jocks, where i'm from, were mostly football...

Theater of the Mind and VTTs: Oh Brave New World...

I'we been playing ttrpgs totm pretty much whole my life. Even in the old days of 3x/PF1. During pandemic, we just used google meets and shared google drive. No vtt-s or anything. But, our group isn't into super tactical combat. If you have players that like that stuff, totm isn't really for them.

D&D 5E (2014) So 5E is the Successor to AD&D 2nd Edition? How and How Not?

Funny enough but our main campaign started in 2013 with 2ed and we switched it to Next playtest and then 5e proper. Half of my playgroup started with 2ed ad&d and they all said that 5e gives them 2e vibes. Some similarities are quick and easy way to build characters, with almost no choices...

    D&D 5E (2024) Lycanthropes in the MM

2014 was just as bad when it came to rules for pc-s as lychantropes. 5e ditched concept of templates which was pretty decent way to have rules for PCs.

    D&D 5E (2024) Lycanthropes in the MM

Meh. To bland. They removed almost everything that made them interesting encounter. Also, no rules for PC lychantropes is just lame. Guess it's back to homebrewing monsters. :D

What are your TTRPG Goals for 2025?

Try to maintain our sunday sessions at more or less regular weekly basis at least until july. And by regular, i'm hoping to achieve at least 2 out of 4 sessions per month. Finish our current story arc this year. Try to fit in couple of one shot sessions of Mork Borg.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle monster knowledges in your game?

That's why i'm taking into account things like race, class and background when someone makes knowledge check. 2 characters, scholarly wizard and tavern hopping bard can both make same kn:arcana check, hit same dc and get two completely different information from it. Cause they recall information...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle monster knowledges in your game?

I see how it can be viewed as "gotcha" and some people probably do use it as that. For me, it's more about world building and immersion. Using it on monsters that are very common doesn't make sense. Specially for things that are more or less human with a paint job. But even then, it can be fun...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle monster knowledges in your game?

Depends how you like to run game world and how you approach what knowledge skill does. Personally, i run games where knowledge skill is your ability to recall pieces of knowledge about certain topics. If you fail - you can't recall anything. It's like blanking out on exam. You know that you...

D&D 5E (2014) How much does cover cost?

How much door costs? You take plain old oak wood door, saw it down a bit, add iron handle in the middle, add to small wheels on the sides. You have mobile cover.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle monster knowledges in your game?

What @Reynard is talking about is players getting information that are considered "true in game world" which may or may not be factually true in regards with monster stat block. Lets use example. Vampires. In game, it might be common knowledge that vampires are rebuked by holly objects. That...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle monster knowledges in your game?

In my games, there isn't object called "monster manual" with stat blocks. There is accounts written about some of the more common monsters. Some of it it's true, some is false, some is incomplete. More rare the creature is, less written lore is about it and it's more myths and legends than tech...

Legacy of Kain Is Getting a TTRPG

I see some disappointed players when they find out it's not about playing Raziel/Cain but those measly mortals. It could turn off some fans of video game series.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle Insight in your game?

I straight up tell my players that Insight isn't lie detector and if they intend to use it that way, they shouldn't bother to take it as a skill. It's body language reading skill. It can give you some clues, but interpretation of those clues is up to players. It has it uses in social interaction...

How important is it to you or your players for characters to feel "overpowered"?

Hero is often used instead of protagonist. All PCs are protagonists, but not all PCs are heroes. It highly depends on the type of game one plays. When it comes to superheroes, let's take Batman. While he does fight his rogues gallery of super villains, he also fights common criminals. If we...
