    Anyone got the Dummies book?

I'm a bit disappointed that it's so tightly tied to D&D3E in particular. A book like this, while primarily about D&D, could've been a general intro to RPGs, quite easily. As is, it didn't look like there was anything of use to the prospective RPer who's not getting into D&D. At a glance, even...

    Anyone got the Dummies book?

OK, except it lacks basic consistency/parallelism. If a die numbered 00..90 is a 'd90', then surely a die numbered 0..9 is a 'd9', right? But one presumes that one or more of the writers actually calls it that--i can't believe they invented a name they'd never use just for a gamebook.

What OTHER game magazines do you read? (besides Dragon or Dungeon)

Should i bother pointing out the irony of us having this discussion on a "D&D/D20" forum, instead of an "RPG" or "gaming" forum?

    Tired of d20 yet?

I think the only point of debate is whether a rules-lite game has more inconsistency than a crunchy game. IME, no. In yours, yes. I'm not sure anything more-objective can be said on the matter. Of course, you allude to my problem with crunchy games: i either am incapable of keeping track of a...

    Tired of d20 yet?

Huh. If i were ever playing an RPG whose system got in the way of the RPing, i'd just pick a different system. Let me put forth a hypothetical: if a new system would take you a session of actual play to get completely comfortable with, and therefore you know that your group's RPing would...

    Tired of d20 yet?

Possibly. Depends on what the group is expecting. If they're coming at it from a "collaborative storytelling, but with more rules" approach, then they'll be more comfortable with fewer rules to keep track of. If they're coming at it from a "adventure game, but with more flexibility" approach...

    Tired of d20 yet?

First, that's only a problem if it's a problem for your game group. For many of the groups i've been in, that would be a non-issue--especially if it meant that both players got to have fun because their respective characters got to do cool stuff when the opportunity came up. It only might become...

    Tired of d20 yet?

That's not a particularly useful analogy, IMHO. In a computer game, your only options are what the rules allow. In an RPG, you can do all sorts of things outside of the formalized rules, so, depending on your playgroup, adding options to the rules might not be adding options to gameplay, just...

    Tired of d20 yet?

Yep--i'm not meaning to single out D20 System, by any means. Is that pure hypothesis, or have you actually seen that? Depending on why one games, that *is* a plausible consequence, but not one i've ever heard of or seen myself. My point wasn't that i've learned lots of games--it was that...

What OTHER game magazines do you read? (besides Dragon or Dungeon)

Actually, i claim that it was because of that diversity, not despite it. That is, simply the fact that it is a fresh look makes it a valuable resource--something different and new (such as for a different game system or setting) is more creatively stimulating than more of the same, no matter how...

Why D&D is slowly cutting its own throat.

But the question is, why the nostalgia, and what is the familiarity for? The original poster is positing that the nostalgia is for the fluff, and the familiarity is for the fluff. It's purely anecdotal, and probably coincidental, but i had essentially zero exposure to any of the fluff beyond...

    Registration Experience (Good or bad?)

I know nothing of preregistration (though, it still wasn't online at that point, was it?), but onsite registration under Andon was far worse than the worst it's ever been when run by GenCon LLC. You don't remember the 6+hr lines just to get in the door (never mind buying any tickets)? I doubt...

    Registration Experience (Good or bad?)

Yes. I guess the difference is that there's always been way more i want to do at Gencon than i could possibly do--i have to sleep at some point, and can only be in one place at a time. So having some events sold out has merely made my decisions easier: instead of trying to decide between 6...

What OTHER game magazines do you read? (besides Dragon or Dungeon)

Other than Knights of the Dinner Table (which i still think of as a comic book first, gaming mag second) and Pyramid (online rather than print), i didn't know there *were* any other RPG mags. I hope this thread mentions some, 'cause i'd love an RPG mag (vice a D&D mag) to start showing up in my...

Fantasy Flight Games is having another sale . . .

Not at all. First of all, it's still the same creatives behind it, they're just using FFG's marketing muscle of publishing and distribution. Secondly, the new players and moderators guides, together, have all the content of the old core book plus the archipelagos supplement, and then a bit...

    Registration Experience (Good or bad?)

That's not an alternative to the existing system; that's fixing the existing system. To match the parallel of umbrella-to-raingear, there'd need to be some way of registering for events at GenCon that bypassed the need for the existing registration system, while still leaving the existing...

    Registration Experience (Good or bad?)

I'm pretty certain the answer to all that is 'no'. First of all, there were 3 intermediate owners between TSR and GenCon LLC: WotC, then Andon, then WotC again. Secondly, i remember from conversations at the time that Andon specifically chose not to use any of the existing TSR computer systems...

    Registration Experience (Good or bad?)

Most aren't. They're water-resistant. In most rains, they'll keep you dry. But i've been out in storms that were heavy enough and long enough that everybody's umbrellas soaked through. And for some cheaper umbrellas, it doesn't take much--an hour or two of heavy rain'll do it. [Probably because...

Pathfinder 1E Details on Paizo's GameMastery Line

So don't. I have a box of minis, from back when we used them all the time (now i use them occasionally). A few of them are painted, from when my brother decided to try mini painting. Most are not. It never even occurred to me to paint them, and the vast majority of gamers i've known have never...

Why D&D is slowly cutting its own throat.

Well, i think part of the disagreement is over whether we're talking about D&D-the-RPG, or D&D-the-brand. LotR and Marvel Comics continuing to be successful despite the failure of their respective RPGs is, i think, a point in favor of the original poster: it's the "fluff" that's of primary...
