D&D General No One Reads Conan Now -- So What Are They Reading?

I have never read Corriea. I always assumed he wrote video game fiction and I mainly stopped reading tie-in novels. As I said before, I have not paid any attention to things like Hugo awards since I was in college. For me, I love the experience of finding news books and authors at bookstores...

D&D General No One Reads Conan Now -- So What Are They Reading?

Ah. I do not pay attention to book awards. I never found them useful as a measure of what I may enjoy in a book.

D&D General No One Reads Conan Now -- So What Are They Reading?

I mean, I have heard of Corriea, but never read his books. I am a fan of Baen books, in general. They allow you to own your ebooks rather than rent them.

Who the heck are “sad puppies?” This discussion seems to have gotten odd.

Romantic fantasy is fine. I love Valdemar, Green Rider, and Rhapsody books. Maas's Throne of Glass was good, but her subsequent romantasy romance novels....no. Those are romance novels.

I gave up on Martin because I hate grim and gritty and he got way too graphic with rape and other things that were a complete turn off.

D&D General No One Reads Conan Now -- So What Are They Reading?

You are not alone. There is a growing complaint over the lack of more traditional fantasy books and people feeling shut out or looking for books published outside of traditional publishing. I am in publishing so I ignored Amazon's self-published stuff for years (I like editing) and I started...

D&D General No One Reads Conan Now -- So What Are They Reading?

That is the choice of the publishers and bookstores. I feel that it would be better to just create a romantasy section in this case. They did it with YA and then placed a lot of traditional sf&f in that section. They even went far enough to create a YA sf&f section now. The net effect, I feel...

D&D General No One Reads Conan Now -- So What Are They Reading?

And, for a separate point, the traditional publishers are making the conscious choice to shut out traditional fantasy fiction that is still very popular and driving segments of the market to self-published works on places like Amazon. It is their choice but I feel like that is largely due to...

Not at all; however, it is not traditional fantasy and throwing it into the fantasy section versus the romance section is wrong. They are romance novels.

Romantasy is just a romance novel with a fantasy background. It is killing traditional fantasy publishing.

TTRPG Genres You Just Can't Get Into -and- Tell Me Why I'm Wrong About X Genre I Don't Like

Romantic fantasy, like Blue Rose, is not romance. It tends to be idealized settings like Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar series or Elizabeth Haydon's Rhapsody books. In fact, Blue Rose pulled a lot from Valdemar when building it. I am not sure I would even call those settings romantic fantasy any...

They do allow you to draw, I believe. I'd have to check again.

[Kobold Press] State of Play: shipping changes threaten the hobby

Shifting to PDF only is not really any more environmentally friendly. You still have ongoing power and online storage costs for the material. Honestly, PDFs may be worse in the long term than physical books. Media rate is not a subsidy. It is handled differently than other mail types and is...

TTRPG Genres You Just Can't Get Into -and- Tell Me Why I'm Wrong About X Genre I Don't Like

I hate super hero games. I cannot find any reason that I would want to play them. I tried M&M, once, and I liked the DM and the character but I am kind of exhausted with supers as a genre. I would not play in a romance game. For me, any game set in a popular universe or setting will turn me...

Sigil, Wizards of the Coast's VTT, Officially Launches

It will be interesting once they add AI. If you can use voice commands to describe the map and setting, then it makes the tool very easy to use. For me, I do not have the time or inclination to build elaborate maps. If I use them, and I stopped doing so years ago, then I just throw the players...

Correct. I guess you could use it as a physical table but what would be the point?

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

I have done the same since 3.5 although I routinely hit high level play in 2e/3.0 without the same issues that seem to pop up now.

    Spoilers Academy Awards 2025

I did not look into which movies were not eligible. The number I saw was that 36% of movies were ineligible this year, which seems high.

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

Are you using 4e level tier designations? I do not hear normal players using tier language for levels. I an only guess you mean 1-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20…..
