D&D General The rapier in D&D

There’s still some peoples in Africa who hunt huge game (elephants, giraffes) as a rite of passage and proof of skill. The hard part is chasing the target for a few days after you wound it so it doesn’t even get a chance to heal. Poisons are sometimes used. Even these people don’t consider this...

D&D General The rapier in D&D

Clearly what the people want is a giant chart with different damage values for each weapon against each kind of monster! (Even Rolemaster only had like, three categories of target)

D&D General The rapier in D&D

How big of a dragon are we talking about? Because even an adult dragon is as big as an elephant, and if you got a rapier all the way in that would cause a noticeable boo-boo. Of course, the only efficient muscle-powered melee weapon is a lance (mounted use); ranged weapons could be as small as...

D&D General Why do we color-code Dragons?

I think this is true of most players; which is basically my point.

    Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart

Are you suggesting spells should work like skills? Like, fireball shouldn't be a thing just a general "fire magic" skill?

    Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart

I haven't seen it either, though even Daggerheart doesn't do that. Daggerheart cards are for the spell equivalents (mostly class features though also ancestry abilities). Daggerheart uses a freeform skill system so cards wouldn't really work.

D&D General Why do we color-code Dragons?

re metagaming dragon colors: 1. These color-associations are spelled out on the Player's Handbook in the description for dragonborn 2. The PHB also tends to consider dragonborn a fairly common race Ergo, I think we can assume most players and characters are at least broadly familiar with...

And yet dragonborn consistently held the number 4 spot on the “most popular race” surveys.

D&D General 5.5 PHB Species Options

re: gnomes: A small (natch) but persistent minority of players love to play Little Guys, and while halflings are the obvious choice, gnomes hit more of the Little Guy(tm) tropes. Goblins and kolbolds do too, but only if people think of them as ugly-cute and not just ugly. (which type you see...

D&D General Dragonborn as Kobolds: Yea or Nay?

Dog people are the original furries - the ancient Greeks called them cynocephaloi (lit. Dog-head) and had a whole mythology about them. This was common-ish folklore through the middle ages. Maybe it’s like druids and bows: it’s so obviously appropriate that it cannot be allowed!

D&D General Dragonborn as Kobolds: Yea or Nay?

My headcanon is that kolbolds and dragonborn are the same species anyways (with a middle-size variant as well) but represent different castes. I like your idea as a soft way to add dragonborn to existing settings as essentially giant kolbolds. It's about as good as my personal go-to of...

    How Special Are The PCs?

For a slightly more nuanced answer: I do think it’s important that the pcs are the protagonists, though exactly what that means depends a lot on the genre of play. Horror protagonists aren’t very different from everymen, but superhero story protagonists are some of the most distinct and powerful...

    How Special Are The PCs?

I prefer the pcs to be very special indeed; Exalted is pretty much my personal sweet spot. I can enjoy a wide range of course, but I can be a regular guy in real life.

D&D General Dragonborn In Your Game (A Poll)

There was a supplement that had "racial paragon classes" so you could 3 levels of elf (gaining proficiency with traditional elven weapons, a little bit of magic, some bonuses to elven senses, etc.) They were available for all the PHB races and maybe some others, and I think the biggest one had 5...

D&D General Dragonborn In Your Game (A Poll)

By default: tails but no wings. Tail-less could be a genetic variant or the result of losing one's tail, but most dragonborn have one. Tails are not prehensile and don't give any specific benefits, but a dragonborn can make tail-strike unarmed attacks (with full Martial Arts features for monks)...

D&D General Any Houndfolk species suggestions? (I also offer a homebrew idea draft.)

The only canine-people in a dnd-alike I know of offhand are Starfinder's Vlaka - they're kinda wolf-folk, but not particularly wolf-like in theme. Other than that, my main suggestion would be to call them cynocephaloi, which is the ancient Greek name for dog-headed people.
