D&D General Build the "Definitive Pantheon"

If I’m combining gods, death + justice is a fun combo.

D&D General Build the "Definitive Pantheon"

Yeah, I never liked that bit Abaddon was a good antagonist, though, so if I were to use the pantheon I'd keep him in place.

D&D General Build the "Definitive Pantheon"

Back in 3e this was easier: you need to cover all the cleric domains. 5e's much shorter list of domains makes this less fun, in my opinion. On the other hand, my favorite fantasy pantheon is Guild Wars' true gods, which has only five. Balthazar, god of war, fire and smiths; Dwayna, goddess of...

D&D General Build the "Definitive Pantheon"

If that's what you want to lean on - I would suggest not using gods per se. Use the Greater Outsiders of each outer plane to fill in that role fictionally, and let clerics just pick whatever domain makes sense for their character. You might need to do a deep dive to find the names, (the 3e Book...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Warlock"

Unless every class is equally customizable (same number of decision points, same number of choice at each point, same relevance to each choice) - yeah, technically one will be at the top. Realistically, the goal is for each class to have enough options to fully cover the intended fantasy. Which...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Warlock"

It's more likely that when, say, Genie Patron is republished it'll have a line about mephits being available via Pact of the Chain to all warlocks. Or they'll just note that in the Monster Manual.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Warlock"

Except none of the (Xanathar's) rules actually reinforce this; it's not even magical until you take Pact of the Blade and Improved Pact Blade. If you actually got a sentient weapon that'd be awesome- but probably better as a fighter subclass than a warlock.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Warlock"

In the last playtest, did Pact of the Blade grant charisma to attack rolls?

D&D General Warforged? How Long Could One Live For?

If I even play a warforged this will be their obsession: claiming (or better yet building) a Creation Forge to ensure the survival of the species - since they don't know how long individuals will last, they're likely to feel a time crunch to get this done.

D&D General Defining "New School" Play (+)

Those don't really speak to the style of play though. Consistency is just better game design (even OSR games are getting away from having a whole new dice mechanic for each kind of action) or things that are just "not OSR" like "hey let's consider the story implications of this" - there's a lot...

    D&D 5E (2014) Homebrew druid/artificer character

Are they trying to be an armored bear? Becuase that's either easy or impossible. The easy answer is don't multiclass and just use barkskin to get armor that can be maintained while wildshaped. Option B is to get custom magic armor that works while wildshaped. If they want to Armored...

D&D General Defining "New School" Play (+)

Since "new school" is used for any of the half-dozen or more ways to play the game that aren't old-school - yeah, that tracks. "New School" is about as helpful as defining movies as "Westerns" and "Not Westerns."

    D&D General Gnome Paladins

Serious answer: gnomes have a bit of a bad rep as being "joke characters" - especially since Dragonlance introduced tinker gnomes to the wider audiences. And very few players can make joke characters work. Sure you don't have to play a tinker gnome, nor do you need to flanderize it to Krynn...

D&D General Defining "New School" Play (+)

D&D 5E (2014) Fighter should be called Knight and Monk Should be called Fighter, change my mind

I feel meh. The idea of male witches doesn't bother me either, and frankly English isn't that gendered anymore. It doesn't irk me personally to call a woman a sorcerer rather than a sorceress. Heck, if we mean a female armored mounted medieval-ish warrior, then most people would just say...

D&D 5E (2014) Fighter should be called Knight and Monk Should be called Fighter, change my mind

Tangentially, my only issue with the monk is that it's trying to capture two distinct fantasies with one class (unarmed warrior and wuxia/kung fu mystic). This makes it unnecessarily tricky to build a character who leans on one fantasy but not the other, like a wuxia swordsman, ninja, pugilist...

D&D 5E (2014) Fighter should be called Knight and Monk Should be called Fighter, change my mind

It's an official job title, a government law enforcement agent with a particular portfolio. A paladin is just "a government agent" though typically a rather high-ranking one (ie sent out under the Holy Roman Emperor's direct orders rather than being locally appointed.) On the other hand, even...
