D&D 5E (2014) Fighter should be called Knight and Monk Should be called Fighter, change my mind

See also cleric, bard, paladin, ranger. So "only" 6/13 classes are based on real-world historical social classes. I think one more won't break the game. Honestly the best fix for barbarian is to remove the "must attack" requirement - Most players aren't going to rage and then try to be...

D&D 5E (2014) Advice for the Skill Monkey Blues?

If you decide to try to stay with the group, you could ask to change to a more "genre-appropriate" character, since you built your not understanding what kind of game it was going to be. Then build Tatewaki Kuno. /s

    D&D 5E (2014) What I Don't Like About Subclasses, and Potential Solutions.

I feel the only problems with subclasses are: 1. Some, but only a few, change you to a totally different kind of character. Hexblades fix a problem, but the real problem is that Warlocks are expected to be able to handle melee some of the time. In other games, this sort of "play a different...

D&D General Defining "New School" Play (+)

Sure. They might also decide that Acrobatics is the skill for jumping, or an OSR dm might decide that all pcs are illiterate because barbarians are noted as such but no other class says either way. But I don't think it's fair to say any style of play is more or less prone to dms...

D&D General Defining "New School" Play (+)

Just to point out something here: Generally, the point isn't that characters can only do what's on the character sheet; it's that characters definitely can do something that's listed on the character sheet. So my rogue certainly can pick locks because I have lock picks and proficiency with...

D&D General Defining "New School" Play (+)

In terms of playstyles, Old School playstyle seems to be a broad community-accepted concept; we might not agree on the definition but we generally know what someone means when they say "I like to run an old-school game using 5e rules." "New School" is just... anything else. OP defined it they...

D&D General Changing Order of Character Creation, from 1e to 2024

If it's roll-and-arrange, then I just want to know if I have really good stats that might allow a weird build, mid stats for regular options, or low stats that make me need to optimize a bit more than usual. But if I'm dying to play a druid anyways, I can roll after to see how wise I really am.

D&D General Changing Order of Character Creation, from 1e to 2024

I can't remember the last time I actually made the decisions in order - usually it's either "roll ability scores then pick stuff based on that" or "pick key concept, pick details based on that" typically making decisions in the order they come to me - which usually means race and class are...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Lied To Me. Gp vs Sp

It’s been that way in every edition I’ve played, though only 5e enforced it.

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Lied To Me. Gp vs Sp

Based on Forged in Fire, it takes about three to four days to make a sword - three if it's not too big and no errors happen at any point. If you were taking commissions, you'd probably say "five days" so you aren't rushed. So a professional swordsmith (which is a different job than a village...

D&D General Defining "New School" Play (+)

If I had to do a timeline, it'd be Old School (DYI ethos) > Silver Age (high crunch) > Modern (focused play). But as other have noted, all three are fairly popular in the hobby at the moment.

D&D General It's Session Zero! How Much Backstory Do You Give Your Character?

Of course, this all assumes the dm hasn't stated what they want beforehand - if the dm says they want a one-page backstory, or for us to fill out a list of 20-questions we'd all endeavor to do that.

D&D General It's Session Zero! How Much Backstory Do You Give Your Character?

Some, but really it depends on how complex my concept is. I need enough to explain how I learned all my class features and why I'm out adventuring. Obviously more complex builds/exotic classes may take more explaining. If I'm connected to some specific part of the setting, I may ask to...

D&D 5E (2014) Druids seen in the Wild (Shape?)

I think I've seen two moon druids, one spores, one stars, and one wildfire. Moon druid is overrated on reddit, but actual played characters rarely look like what reddit tends to talk about.

D&D General Do You D&D OSR?

You rarely need a hammer with 5e anyways; it's already play-dough. Just smoosh it into the shape you want. Just don't try to get it to hold up anything heavy. (To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure what heavy means in this analogy)

D&D 5E (2014) Which PC would you Haste?

It’s kinda cheesy as well, but perfectly legal. Generally, you want to haste whoever has the biggest single attack, which generally means rogue or smiter > greatweapon > single weapon > dual-wielder or monk, but there’s exceptions to that as well. Battlmaster is a solid second choice. Or...

D&D 5E (2014) Which PC would you Haste?

If I’m looking to optimize, then the rogue. They can ready an action to attack off-turn and thus double their damage output. Otherwise I’d use it defensively, which is situational.

    D&D 5E (2014) Your best Eldritch Knight?

Oh yeah that's a major fix that's been sorely need for... ten years now.

    D&D 5E (2014) Your best Eldritch Knight?

Sword bard is a different subclass, but similar. They get to use Bardic Inspiration like battlemaster maneuvers, but better. I played one to 20th, and they have the same problem as Bladesingers: actually swinging the sword is almost always worse than casting a spell, so they don't really play...

    D&D General The nitty gritty

I only track pricey spell components, but most people I play with use foci anyways. I sometimes track other stuff as a player, but hp and class features are the only things I see people consistently care about.
