D&D General It's Magic, You Know

I’d rather rely more on balances than try to make everything a check.

D&D General It's Magic, You Know

Eh, I don’t like that. Do you prevent fighters from swinging their swords after they miss until they get a rest in?

D&D General It's Magic, You Know

As a general answer I'd also say spell points - it's intuitive and well-tested. I'd like a system where every spell is written to be unlimited use, a la Pathfinder's Kineticist, which could be expanded into a full magic system... but that's a little too particular for a general fantasy game...

D&D 5E (2024) Do players really want balance?

Imagine if you had to do all the math by hand though. Lots of stuff works with computer games that doesn't work as well with pen-and-paper.

D&D 5E (2024) Do players really want balance?

And this design decision resulted in explosive increases in sales. Unless you're willing to make the statement "Most DnD players who play the game regularly aren't having a good time and those who but supplements do so despite not enjoying the game because an average entertainment consumer has...

D&D 5E (2014) Another defenses vs. saving throws thread

two points to swap AC (so if the players are rolling defense they should be rolling d20 + AC mods vs enemies attack bonus +12) for saves woud need to make the base defense 14, yes

D&D 5E (2014) What is the "Simple" Full Casting Class?

I will note that the 2024 warlock looks a lot more complex, especially with the Agonizing Blast rewrite - now it’s a lot less obvious what cantrips to pick.

    D&D 5E (2024) Crazy armor idea

It's a very workable idea, but would be very hard to implement into 5e without either carefully balancing it or changing a bunch of other stuff.

D&D 5E (2014) Another defenses vs. saving throws thread

The two point swing is for two reasons: 1. The average of a d20 isn't 10, it's 10.5. By switching who's rolling, you change the average form 10 to 10.5 on one side, and from 10.5 to 10 on the other. Changing the static number by +1 corrects for this. 2. Since ties go to the roller, you need to...

D&D 5E (2014) What is the "Simple" Full Casting Class?

I voted warlock for the simplest in terms of "what I would recommend to a new player." Wizard is probably second. Druid is definitely the least simple.

D&D General Why the Great Thief Debate Will Always Be With Us

Incidentally, this is my main takeaway from playing Fate: if the genre/setting is clear and well-understood, it flows very easily. If the genre/setting is unclear, it's hard to get anything done.

Or at the very least not going to come to any sort of agreement, even about "what it's like to play DnD"

    D&D 5E (2024) Multiclassing as feats:

The 2024 rules don't seem amenable to this - consider what a one-level dip into fighter gets you: Proficiency in all armor, which could be up to four regular feats (not origin feats - none of those give armor proficiency!) Martial weapon proficiency - one feat Three weapon masteries - the...

    D&D 5E (2024) Abusing True Strike 2024

I think haste still works: hasted action: stab, with sneak attack regular action: Ready An Action to stab if you're in a position to do so and benefit from Sneak Attack. Unless haste was rewritten to not allow readied actions with your non-hasted action, it's still good.

D&D 5E (2024) Dungeon Master's Guide Bastion System Lets You Build A Stronghold

How dare a corporation present the product in a way to maximize sales! This will be the end of our hobby if people who sell games try to increase sales by not fully detailing every nuance of gameplay in every video about the product!

D&D 5E (2024) Dungeon Master's Guide Bastion System Lets You Build A Stronghold

In the rules, it’s a single pc’s stronghold near as I can tell. But advising dms not to mess with it is going to ruin dnd forever, apparently, since we all know brand new dms never make mistakes.

D&D 5E (2024) Dungeon Master's Guide Bastion System Lets You Build A Stronghold

Mayhaps, but I'd rather have those restrictions than ruin thousands of players' first games.

D&D 5E (2024) Pact of the Blade + Shadow Blade?

Due to the new wording of the Pat of the Blade invocation, would it be possible to make a shadow blade a pact blade? In the 2014 rules, you could not, as bonding a weapon took an hour and a shadow blade only lasts one minute. But if I'm reading the new invocation correctly, it now only takes a...
