    False truisms in 5th edition

Yeah, indoors they put him up front to soak damage. He’ll still go last but at least he gets to go.

    False truisms in 5th edition

Zap is right about range and mobility. Being superior to heavy melee. The DPR spreadsheet almost notwithstanding. All too often the low dex paladin spends one or more rounds getting to a position. (After bringing up the rear on initiative)Then he can get his devastating smite on. Honestly I...

Am I alone in hating Christmas-themed adventures?

I can’t say I have ever been in or run a Christmas D&D adventure......but if I did it would look like Die Hard.

DMs! Have you ever had a “boss encounter” turn into a cakewalk? What happened?

Air walking mummy lord. Dispel magic into a 200 foot swan dive. All I could do is shake my head and move on.

AD&D 1E 5e Play, 1e Play, and the Immersive Experience

For me skills and proficiencies have always been immersion breaking. Every edition. Hit points, levels, combat not so much. (Don’t ask me why) In the old days it was “What do you mean I can’t hide because I’m not a thief?” Or “You mean to tell me I can just decide that I can swim but I need a...

AD&D 1E 5e Play, 1e Play, and the Immersive Experience

Numbers will only get you so far. A player that understands the meaning of the numbers will be able to use that info. No matter how much time is spent playing some people will never be able to put it together. I have turned to telling the players in a simple narration that I think fits their...

Riddle me this: How often do you use riddles?

I use them fairly often I guess. The last time I did there was a sphinx so it seemed apropos. I warned them earlier that sphinxes are deadly serious when it comes to riddles. I think they thought it was a hint. The riddle was IIRC The sum of mortal privation is etched on my face. What am...

Suggest to me a cool monster for this encounter

Devil Swine, I’ve seen a homebrew that looked good on D&D beyond. IIRC it was waaaaaay back in the Expert from BECMI. and it’s fun to say.

AD&D 1E 5e Play, 1e Play, and the Immersive Experience

I got partially through the thread and something occurred to me that I feel I must share. I remember playing the 1e, BEMCI, 2e and then 3e and 4e and now to 5e. Most time spent on 2e, 3e(&.5 and PF) and now 5e. Now for my insight. ( if there is such a thing) D&D through the end of 2e seems...

Sorry Folks, I just can't get into 5e

I love 5e. I still look for something better something different. Something old or new rules light or heavy. I would play any edition happily. If I am being honest I never used all the rules or used them correctly anyway(misread, unread or apathy). I really just go by feel. There are probably...

    Most frustrating quirk of 5E?

The language used. Attack action, move action, bonus action, action. They don’t mean anything outside of the game. They’re specifically shaped holes that were put in to streamline something or balance something(haha that will be the day). Instead, they really are an extra layer of rules that...

What 2 Colours for each module?

Curse of Strahd: purple and silver (royalty and the moon) Dragon heist: gold and brown (treasure and earth) Tomb of Annihilation: red and black (danger and death) Storm King’s Thunder: white and grey (lightning and clouds) Yawning Portal: orange and indigo (hearth and strangeness) Out of...

D&D 5E (2014) Tarrasque vs. Clay Golem (A thought experiment)

Wow that’s some powerful necromancy. To the OP or anyone else I would say the golem is crushed as an object or structure. Done and done.

The final word on DPR, feats and class balance

I’m torn here. Most of the time I’m DMing. Cantrips are used often and they are good. I lose a sense that anyone ever needs to conserve power. If you do run out of spells one of two things happen. You either rest and get spells back or you continue blasting and only lag behind the fighter a...

How to trim 5E down to "Rules Lite" (for kids)

Give them a character based on what they know. Teach them the character sheet. Teach them the dice. Build a first couple of adventures like you are showing the system eg. skills, ability checks, saves and attacks. Teach them about rest. Don’t dumb it down. Give them tips and insights...

Trying to make 5e more oldish and want some people's opinions

Why don’t you play 2e and steal the stuff you like from 5e?

Skills used by players on other players.

I hope the op learned a lesson. Don’t let PCs impose their will on other PCs using the rules. I will say never again at my table. If the players agree beforehand and they can handle it then that’s fine. My players can not.

"Solo-crawling" Dungeon of the Mad Mage

One character. Thief Rogue, Path of Shadow Monk or Beastmaster Ranger. Difficulty would probably be Hard, normal and easy respectively.
