[FR] Adventure ideas for the Sword Coast and the North

From a DM standpoind it is a bit dry. I love the movie Predator. It has a lot going on. *Elite team *cover story to get the team in "rescue cabinet minister" *red flags and here is where it gets sticky -additional team member from someones past -subtle clues "does this cabinet...

    What happens to the "suboptimal?"

I think I gravitate to less than optimal characters. My goal (if there is such a thing) when I make a character is to always have something to do. When the the party is getting into something. They are usually not weak characters in spite of sometimes moving against conventional wisdom.

Making ability scores more about the character concept.

Yes, Especially if it fits with the usual theme for races. I have just come up with some that I like so much I won't share....yet. I feel like any racial ability or boon should be good or great initially but gradually be overshadowed by the character's other abilities unless they seek to...

Making ability scores more about the character concept.

I agree. They should be different. When I suggested feats i meant something similar to how we have feats now. The stronger the pc the more and better strength feats they would get. Non-feat bonuses would be based on level. Numerical bonuses from feats I think should be very rare or non-existant.

I am in favor of removing racial bonuses. Not so much the racial minimums.

    D&D 5E (2014) New class concepts

I will comment on all three of your premises. Hopefully the answers wil be obvious. 1) Describe a new class but don't use the following words or any words that are synonymous in gaming jargon. Warrior, Spellcaster and Skill User. 2) If this were a premise it wouldn't appear counter itself...

Making ability scores more about the character concept.

Isn't that what the OP was complaining about? Homogenized ability scores among characters already exists. There is no slippery slope. I also disagree that there is too much balance resting on the existence of ability score bonuses for their removal. Balance among what? Martial classes? In the...

Making ability scores more about the character concept.

When I tried my hand at making a game I came up with four stats. The four I came up with were less direct in their application. There was no strength score or charisma score. The players could imagine these in any way they desired. They governed lineage, magic, skill, and disadvantage. I...

Making ability scores more about the character concept.

Rather than give bonuses from ability scores an ability score grants feats related to itself. If you wanted numerical bonuses they could be tied to some feats. These feats would not look quite like the feats we have today. Your selection would shape how the character plays. Instead of A' la...

    Power is Relative

What a player chooses for a character is not the character optimizing itself. It should be assumed that the charcter, as the player want its to be, exists in the world because it can. The concession being that the character is when and where the scene is taking place and the players has agency...

Drizzt Do'Urden Poll: Love Him Or Hate Him?

I read a lot of the books. The early ones were my favorites. After the Dark Elf trilogy I could have done without his monologues. Whiny, preachy and confused.... works better as subtext. I like the supporting cast. Some of them anyway. I also feel like he isn't as skilled as he used to be. I...

This made me smile. DM: "What's Guy D'Mort's initiative?" Player: "Negative three" DM: "The Carrion Crawler wins initiative." DM: " The Carrion Crawler begins eating you."

    I love D&D.....but.

It's a sense that instead of making a fantasy game someone started to make a game that simulated a fantasy game. A sense that it has become so self referential that it may have lost perspective of what it thinks it is trying to do. It has become a meta game. What has been done do is akin to...
