Theories regaurding the change in rules of D&D.

Well, for those of us about to turn 40, there's an element of that... :) No offense, just couldn't resist. ;)

    OGL Swords & Sorcery?

I agree with the gang that says D&D has to be mashed a bit to fit it into a real sword and sorcery style, although 1e and 3e both presuppose a fairly sword & sorcery world -- it's just that then the rules establish a higher fantasy ... um, interface, I guess is the best word I can come up with...

What do you miss from the good ol' days?

Still playing AD&D (or rather, "back to playing" it). Nothing to miss.

Going beyond humans in funny clothes?

If I had to vote for the single best science fiction novel of all time, it is Fire Upon the Deep. And Vinge's Deepness in the Sky would come in the top ten as well (with Startide Rising, Pride of Chanur, Foundation and others). The practical problem with roleplaying non-humans is that BOTH the...

    OGL Swords & Sorcery?

Savage Worlds looks like a good bet for this, too. The system is very fast, and combat has the potential to be lethal on an unusual combination of rolls by an enemy. To me, that's the hallmark of a sword & sorcery combat system. The weakness for SW as S&S is that the magic system is a bit...

    High Magic and Sorcery

Already gave my feedback at Dragonsfoot. :) Visit Knights & Knaves, as Grodog says.

Sell me on Savage Worlds -- for Fantasy

The no-effect hit in SW makes a lot better intuitive sense when it's swords against armored opponents than it does when it's unarmored opponents against a tommy gun, that's for sure. But as others note, a hit point system isn't any better when it's unarmored against a tommy gun. You'd take...

Sell me on Savage Worlds -- for Fantasy

I had to get into this just when a new revision is hanging fire. :(

Sell me on Savage Worlds -- for Fantasy

This thread has sold me (I'm not the original poster, btw). I got a copy of the rules last night, and I've looked over the fast play rules some months ago. I'll likely try it out with my group at some point in the future. The basic book suffers from the universal flaw of universal systems...

Awesome thread on rpg.net: To kill a dungeon...

That's a fun read. :D EDIT: there's a Fafhyrd and the Grey Mouser story based on the premise of a living dungeon, but it's not as trippy as that thread.

Reviewing the older versions of D&D

    I posted a review as well. http://www.enworld.org/reviews.php?&do=product&productid=202075

B1 In Search of the Unknown

B1, In Search of the Unknown, was originally boxed with the Holmes Basic Set in a monochrome cover art edition. The author is Mike Carr. The copy I'm reviewing is a later printing with a color front page; the original cover is now the frontispiece. It's a 32 page module, designed as an...

Reviewing the older versions of D&D

Bullgrit - the problem is that the text of the link (Total Bullgrit) makes it look more like a sig line type of thing than the link to the review. I actually clicked on it, though, and when I did I got to your home page, not directly to the module as the link works now. Don't know why; it...

This was the review? Was there more of it that got dropped somehow?

New School Thinking of Going Ol' School

    1) combat plays a lot faster but is more "abstract," meaning that it doesn't comprise specific feats or codify the effects of specific actions. There are rules for situations, but they are much more elastic, vague, and subject to interpretation than in 3e. I consider this a good thing because...

Wizards of the Coast/Kenzer & Company License Agreements Expiring

I'll be darned. I wonder why I thought they were hardback? A couple of other points: the K&C website doesn't say one way or the other whether it's softcover or hardback, and Amazon doesn't seem to sell the current edition.

Wizards of the Coast/Kenzer & Company License Agreements Expiring

In terms of the new edition: As someone who has seen Hackmaster around but never actually purchased it, here's my list of some conceptions and misconceptions that get generated in the mind of a potential purchaser: 1) I don't happen to go to game stores frequently, so I don't see much of the...

    DMing burnout

A weekly game is brutal on the DM. I'm not going to suggest switching rulesets .. if I were, I'd have recommendations ... and I will say that that can help. However, moving to twice a month would help just as much. You've just GOT to have enough time in between sessions to let your creative...

    Finally - I've got a 1e game!

Find out how character generation's being done, first. If you're not allowed to rearrange the stats, you'll have fewer choice options. "Play it as it lays" means you've got to really think as a group to cover the bases.
