    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

:D Actually, I think many of the OSRIC loyal are actually C&C players. No one is actually expected to *play* using the OSRIC rules, it's a platform for publishers. What distinguishes OSRIC is its open license, not the rule-set. It frees up writers to publish material for old-style games...

OSRIC: something for the old schoolers

As I understand it, there have been over 500 unique IP downloads of OSRIC. So at least 498 people can say whatever they want about OSRIC's compatibility with 1e. Two people, myself and P&P, are foreclosed from such discussion.

    D20 Western

I should note that the game I wrote is definitely not a d20 game, even though it's OGL. It's older-school in that there's no skill system, and feats work differently. THere's also a different magic system. Anyone who's looking for a straight up d20 western won't (probably) be interested in...

    D20 Western

I've been working on an OGL game that's a lot like this, but it does use guns. Rules: http://mythmere.tripod.com/sgp.pdf Yahoo group: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/sorcerygunsandplunder/ When it's a bit better playtested, I'm going to release it with a GNU-type license that will allow...

    Beyond High Fantasy

Noir isn't much of an action genre by itself. Fights, even in the film-noir movies, are often only a couple of gunshots long. A lot of pulp writers took the more psychological noir setting and used it as the backdrop for action-oriented stories.

    Beyond High Fantasy

Wow. Nice summary. It's a pet peeve of mine when people describe literary genres poorly. It's nice to see a summary that's right on the money.

    Beyond High Fantasy

Heh. :) The artist is me, too, so that's a big compliment. I figured that even crappy art was better than none for presenting a whole game to a reader who's never seen it before. I will be formatting it much better fairly soon, too. I know a few people who do excellent layout work, but...

What do you like best about being a GM?

I never have to be a player with a bad DM.

    Beyond High Fantasy

I actually wrote one recently. There's a lot of polishing still to be done, but it's complete as a playtest version. http://mythmere.tripod.com/sgp.pdf The magic system's unique, I believe. At least, no-one's mentioned a game that did magic this way before. I used the 30 years war as a...

    Everything got serious

I think it's GREAT. And if they're engaged with it, go for it. Sometimes the best adventures come from moments like this. Think about why the dire rat might have it - a mooseman shaman or an ancient temple of the Moose God. You've got the basics for an awesome adventure there! Moose have a...

    [CnC] Adventure Conversion

I would experiment while running it. I've been working on some monster lists for different level parties, and there are some odd results. Mainly the oddities come from saving throws, which are hard in C&C. My sense is that using HD as the bonus will work better - I'd try that for the first...

    C&C - My "Battlemat" rules

Hey, Treebore, good to see you back! (where were you, btw)? It might seem a bit 3e-ish, but I've always given my characters the ability to influence combats with a few manuever possibilities. What I don't like about 3e is that there are so many calculations and diverse modifiers involved - if...

    C&C - My "Battlemat" rules

The other possibility is to use Scadgrad's spellcasting rules. As to using 3e with simpler monsters, no. There's more to it than that. Skills, long hang-time on player actions because of calculations, difficulty of planning adventures to handle DC numbers, etc. Also as an aesthetic thing, I...

    C&C Assault on Blacktooth Ridge

I agree it would have been better at 32 pages, but I think TLG is still a bit nervous about putting out materials with a higher price tag for C&C. As the publisher, it's probably hard to decide where to draw the line between quality and price. I think they did a relatively good job with Assault.

'Old School' Experiences with D&D 3.5

Melan, that's a brilliant post. Right on the money. I especially like "challenge the players, not the PCs." You can play 3e that way, just as you can fail to play older editions that way, but I agree it's an excellent portrayal of how game design shifted from 2E to 3E.

Want to play some OLD SKOOL D&D?

Up until I started C&C, my answer would have been a resounding yes. Now, I'm like the OOP players who don't see a need to switch to C&C because the chosen system is close enough.

Using Monte Cook's "stunts system" in Castles & Crusades

Like I said on another thread, it's not so much the number of tactical alternatives in 3e that causes me a problem - it's the internal complexity involved in calculating them. For me, it completely would depend on the mechanic Monte uses for the stunt system.
