Anyone care to read my 4 page C&C review?

I posted my comment to the review itself. Basically, I think it makes good points, but as a review I think it misses some of the things a review needs. I don't object to what's said - I have a player with opinions almost identical to der Kluge's and der Kluge does an excellent job of...

Sorry - I think the point was missed...

If people are talking about games on a message board, the discussion will pretty much always be focused on a comparison, and D&D is the benchmark. Look at it this way - when people explain why they prefer D&D to a rules-light game, it's done by comparing the rules and stating what to them...

Sorry - I think the point was missed...

Henry - you might be interested in following some of the C&C houserules discussions that Scadgrad and I are beginning on the OGL board. With your earlier comments on macro-micro in mind, my players and I are working on house rules for C&C that will meet this criterion. The discussion isn't far...

Looking for advice from parents: Gaming with baby

Chiming in with consensus, but yes, babies are easy - toddlers make you have to game after bedtime only. Which isn't a problem unless you're used to marathon game sessions. You just lose marathon (5+ hours) games sessions with kids, that's all - unless there's someone watching the kids for you.

    C&C with True20 Feat Conversion

I'm going the other way. We're keeping AOO, which we used in AD&D, calling them "free attacks," we're just not using them at the level of complexity of 3e. For me, this means there are circumstances that create free attacks, but there won't be any feats that play off the free attack situation.

Sorry - I think the point was missed...

I don't think C&C requires prior knowledge of D&D; it would help, but only in the sense that any RPG is easier to play if you've played another RPG before - familiarity with any edition of D&D would certainly help more than other RPGs. I came to it with the D&D familiarity there, so it's hard...

Sorry - I think the point was missed...

I had a post earlier in which I mentioned something that I'd just like to repeat (I think it got lost in a longer post). Next set of surveys and testing, in addition to watching the play at the game table, watch some DMs preparing the adventure beforehand. I bet some interesting product ideas...

Do you still feel the wonder you had in your childhood games?

In December of last year, I was right where you are. Probably worse; it was causing a real crisis for me as a DM. I had tried getting lots of Necromancer Games stuff, and that worked out well but it was still missing something. Some of it was certainly just nostalgia in my case, but some of...

    Book of Names

The Extraordinary Book of Names, by Malcolm Bowers, is Volume IV of Gary Gygax's Fantasy Worlds Series by Troll Lord Games. There are few things in the creation of a vibrant fantasy world than the names - place names, in particular, since the bad or stupid ones have an annoying tendency to...

    My nephew just turned 7...

My son is 8, and we tried D&D 3e with success. He's a smart kid, and picked up - most of it. We've done even better with Castles & Crusades, because the initial learning curve is less. He's got a pretty good grasp of C&C, better than he picked up of 3e. If you want to do 3e, I'd suggest...

    Medieval Town Size

Don't forget - there are usually some very large open areas - a square, usually a large church, and a keep that will require upping the total size if you're just using density (unless those areas are already factored into the density calculation. I also wouldn't do the calculation based on one...

House rule "sets" for Castles & Crusades

Okay, I've been busy working on this. What feats do you allow? So far, I've got power attack, cleave, point blank shot, and precise shot. I haven't yet given any thought to whether these destroy the fighter's class abilities, but a fighter getting extra feats is already rewriting the class...

House rule "sets" for Castles & Crusades

Yes, you recall my group correctly. ;) I think the biggest issue for them is getting consistency in the core "wargame" rules more than anything else. They like to have their slate of abilities more robust, but when the basic wargame rules aren't set in stone - that's a true problem, not just...

    Medieval Town Size

A full sized medieval city was one half a square mile within the walls, roughly. These had populations not much larger than your town - a city would have started at about a 3K population IIRC, and went as high as 10K for the non-metropolises. Italy had higher urban populations, with several...

What is your primary game system?

Castles & Crusades since January, 3.5 before that (and probably again in between C&C sessions once our 3.5 DM is ready to go again).

    Do you like D&D?

I didn't answer the poll because it didn't have an option for preferring a specific other game to D&D. I mildly prefer earlier editions, but strongly prefer another game in general.
