Forked thread: Treasure & Advancement Rates

Forked from AD&D 1st Edition WIR S1 Tomb of Horrors [SPOILERS!! SPOILERS EVERYWHERE!!]‏ - Page 5 - EN World: Your Daily RPG Magazine  I absolutely welcome anyone to read those links. And I absolutely agree that anyone can make up their mind for themselves. Read the "facts" for...

Monster Manual Edition War: The Game!

Very likely, although we'd need to see how Touch of Death is worded to determine whether or not 1e Orcus gets his Spell Resistance. We'd also have to look in the MM 1e to determine what 1e Orcus is specifically immune to, and determine which rules take precedence in the event of contradictory...

Monster Manual Edition War: The Game!

But the 1e creatures will surprise more often. If something happens that requires a skill check, the TSR creatures are SOL; if something happens that requires a proficiency check, the WotC creatures are SOL. I'm telling you, this could be pretty darn fun. Not because X is better than Y, but...

Monster Manual Edition War: The Game!

You know, the 1e cat stats might make sense in 4e, based on damage vs. hit points. Well, except when minions are involved.....

Monster Manual Edition War: The Game!

I think, done this way, we might learn things about these games that we never considered before. And, again, very, very funny fights (esp. with monster commentary!).

Monster Manual Edition War: The Game!

Use THAC0. It exists in 1e as well as 2e (see the DMG monster appendix).

    Just how compatible is Essentials?

As obvious as this advice should be, it is always worth repeating! RCFG, baby! But, if I can convert a 4e module to RCFG, it makes sense that anyone could do the same with 3e, or vice versa. Of course, it is easier to mix & match if you are working from a broad-based balance as a root game...

Monster Manual Edition War: The Game!

Actually, lots of monsters don't specify that you make saves, instead saying "X occurs unless a save is made". My way is still funnier. Nah. Run 'em as written, convert nothing, and glory in the chaos. It's funnier that way! RC

Monster Manual Edition War: The Game!

    But a funny fight.

    Just how compatible is Essentials?

When 6e comes. I fully agree with the OP that Essentials is to 4e what 3.5 was to 3e. The argument that this is not so because they are compatable, where 3e/3.5 are not, is a non-starter, because it is supremely easy to use 3e and 3.5 materials together. Heck, in my home game, I use 1e, 3e...

My DM'ing has gotten worse over the years, not better

(shudder) This sort of thinking is probably why your DMing has become worse. May I recommend instead: Raven Crowking's Nest: C is for Choices, Context, and Consequence (Part I)

Monster Manual Edition War: The Game!

Why? I thought the idea was to compare how the creatures would do, as written. "I guess if the nymph's attack uses 1e rules, the creature gets a 1e save (with its 4e bonus)" does the 1e nymph get 4e hit points, attacks, and AC? If not, why not? I personally think it would be more...

Monster Manual Edition War: The Game!

Hrm. My understanding is that 4e saving throws always occur at the end of the victim's turn (unless granted by an outside source), so that the save can end an effect, but not prevent it. In the event of the nymph's disrobing, everyone is automatically "hit", but there is no "save ends". It is...

    Just how compatible is Essentials?

Perhaps I missed it up thread, but is there an instance where Raven Crowking says believes there to be incompatibility? AFAICT, all Raven Crowking did was say that it wasn't impossible to use 3.5 and 3.0 materials at the same table. But, maybe you can point out the post I missed? RC

    Just how compatible is Essentials?

Having done exactly that, I have to say that this is not only not impossible, it is extremely easy. RC

Monster Manual Edition War: The Game!

The 4e monsters are at an extreme disadvantage, as they do not get to make saving throws. One area SoD effect automatically wipes them all out. Say, a disrobing nymph. Hit point wise, no other edition can touch the inflated numbers of 4e monsters, so pure melee always goes to 4e.

[forked thread] What constitutes an edition war?

True; but the ultimate point was "It was him! Not me! I'm innocent!" which is, IMHO, at the root. We sometimes give ourselves too much benefit of the doubt, and the other person too little. I'm as guilty as anyone (although I try not to be!). RC
