    Women and Children first?

It occurs to me that the other thing being neglected by those suggesting females of other D&D species as noncoms due to physical differences (in addition to the obvious generalization that because such differences exist in humans they must exist in other sapient species) is the presence of...

    Women and Children first?

This only holds true for species or cultures without a predominantly monogamous social system. If pairings are typically monogamous, it won't matter if there's 1 male for 100 females, since he'd only pair with one. It's the same flawed logic used by hunters who refuse to shoot females of...

    Projected map vs. terrain objects

I see a lot of advantage to projection (particularly if you can work in 'fog of war' &/or lightsource shading - those would probably switch my vote). That said, I voted terrain - having once played with it, I can never forget how much it stoked my imagination to actually move my character mini...

Best Magic Items for a Wildshaping Druid?

Ioun stones, if your DM allows them to not be absorbed by wildshape (they do take up an item slot, but they're not really 'worn' as they float around your head). Following on that, if you can get a specially made magic item, work with your DM to price out a 'burned-out' ioun stone (no power...

    OotS 518 is up

Hrm. I wonder if combat off-the-panel would qualify as outside of a city? :)

Explain the appeal of critical fumbles to me

I used to like critical fumbles simply for symmetry with critical hits. Having played Heroes a bit with a DM who uses a luck mechanic (& I don't know Heroes rules well enough to know if that's core or houseruled), I find that I like the concept that crits (good or bad) seem to be trying to...

    d6: pips or numbers?

I'm in the 'both/either' camp. For D&D, I prefer numbers for weapon damage, energy damage on a weapon, etc., but pips for sneak attacks or nukes. IOW, if it's a few dice, numbers to match the rest of the dice set; if it's a lot of dice (which includes d6 systems), time to pull out the box-o'-d6.

Yup, people never complain about things that are free... like, say, the weather. ...

    Earth Town Meets D&D

Yeah, I'm not sure how many libraries would have books detailing every single step needed to build the infrastructure to sustain some of the industries & manufacturing processes we take for granted. Sure, some steps could be skipped (not much need to mine ore for metalworking industries with all...

    Making Your Characters Unique

He isn't in that respect - hence the 'tried-&-true fantasy trope' bit. His differences came up in writing his story as dream-journey visits with his shamanic grandfather (adding a bit of spiritual & possibly magical depth to a melee character), & in personality quirks that emerged during play.

    Making Your Characters Unique

I generally think of my characters as characters from a book, & thus tend to give them epic or odd backgrounds, something that would work in a story. Sometimes this can lead to tried-&-true fantasy tropes (the barbarian chief's son who left his village to explore the world beyond their lands)...

    Earth Town Meets D&D

I think you'll also see conflict between interpretations of what's happening & plans of action. One group might consider this a disease outbreak & try to hole up in the local hospital or clinic; if there's a big enough hospital or university, they might even consider using resources there to...

    Any suggestions for religious festivals?

Some good ideas already. You also mention that the city is in an extinct volcano. Perhaps the reason this occurs every ten years is that this is how often the clerics must renew their bindings on the fire elemental who powers the volcano (& wants it to be not-quite-so-extinct). Thus the...

D&D 4E The 4e Mystery Race is going to be...

One brand new class, one brand new race? My money is on something not previously seen in any edition.

Eight is Enough: How Many Classes?

I would actually go a re-visioned barbarian for a martial controller, using warcries to intimidate opponents & immobilize them with fear. I think arcane defender has already been mentioned for the swordmage (or whatever name they used) that is likely to show up in a later PHBx.

    Facing

I hate facing with a deep & burning passion. I've played one D&D campaign where we used it for a short time, & it seriously screwed up combat as well as the relative power of various feats (i.e. cleave? oh wait, I can't because the other enemy threatening me is behind me.).

What Kind of D&D Character Would You Be?

Chaotic Good Elven Bard 3/Rogue 2 STR 10, DEX 11, CON 11, INT 16, WIS 14, CHA 14 Other than the elf part (I almost never play non-humans; skills addict here) the non-stat stuff fits not only my RL personality but also matchs the type of characters I tend to play. In fact, I actually had a...

D&D 3.x New to gaming - Should I wait for 4E or should buy the 3E Core Rules?

Yeah, I'd make do with the SRD until 4e comes out. I came into 3.x just ahead of 3.5 release, so I just muddled through until it came out rather than buy the old books. I'd recommend the hypertext SRD for ease of online use - just google D&D 3.5 & it'll be the 3rd or 4th hit.
