I agree -- although it'd be nice if there could be a published Eberron adventure with a changeling who doesn't have a distinguishing mark that shows in every form they take. I liked the old version, & like the edited version better. I don't get all of the hang-up about the names. Don't like it? Change it. It gives us a label for the (school? tree?) that's less awkward than 'Spell Set 1', 'Spell Set 2', or whatever. We don't know if there will be any more detail...

I've seen a lot of baseball-sized crystal spheres in the local New Age shop window, with softball-sized seeming rarer (& larger still even more rare). Perhaps they'll be a more manageable size like that. I love the visual for the pirate wizard with an orb in a net like a glass float.

Yeah, with swordmage as arcane defender, it looks like they had ideas for going with one class for each power source/game role combination. I wish they'd gone ahead & put the full twelve into the 1st PHB (not least because I want my bardly goodness!).
