D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

Ok there is a nuance here. You always cast the spell on your turn. You can not ready an action to cast a spell when it is not your turn. This is unique to casting a spell. Going by the wording in the rules: 1. You action surge and take the Ready Action to ready a spell, you cast that spell...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

Ready action is an action, it is not a delay. It does not count as the attack action and the ready action itself does not count as an attack, the reaction would count as an attack if the trigger event occurs and it is in fact an attack. For example: You can not ready the attack action and...

But it is the "normal" way slow is used isn't it?

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

Yes you can because you are not taking them on your turn. When I ready the attack action, I take it off turn after the trigger happens. Per the "Ready a spell" rule I must cast the spell on my turn. IF you are saying I must take the Magic Action to cast it then this too would need to happen...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

It is the most common, it is not normal in the context they are using here. Slow is normally used against multiple enemies, does that mean I can't ready an action to cast it at a single Dragon when it gets close because normally it is used against multiple enemies.

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

That is not true it is an action which you take on your turn. It generally allows you to take another action as a reaction in response to a trigger off turn. Spell casting using the readied action uses a specific rule that bypasses this. There is nothing in the Ready Action which lets you use...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

You are casting it as normal, but you are not using the Magic Action and nothing in the book defines the Magic action as the "normal" way to cast a spell with a casting time of an action. It also does say you hold it. Here is the verbiage: "When you Ready a spell, you cast it as normal...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

Yes that is under the Magic Action, not under the spell description or the description of the Ready action. This is what happens when you use the Magic Action to cast a spell with a reaction time of an action. It is not what happens when you use the Ready Action to cast a spell with a...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

or the Ready Action if you are talking about a spell with a casting time of an action. You can't take both the Ready Action and the Magic Action on your turn. That would be two actions in one turn, so taking the ready action on your turn to cast a spell can not also use the Magic Action on...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

This changed in 5.5. In 5.5 you can't use a slot to cast more than one spell a turn.

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

This is not defined as such in the 5.5E PHB.

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

You can not ready an action to do a bonus action, not for a spell or any other Bonus Action. Anything you do with a Bonus Action must happen on your turn AFAIK. This is why in 5.5 you can't use Ready Action to drink a potion. This is not consistent with the wording in the 5.5E PHB. Spells...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

They did change this in 5.5. You can't use a spell slot to cast more than one spell and there are additional restrictions on Quicken spell, but you can cast more than one spell as long as you don't use more than one slot This is both as written and as intended and discussed during the release...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

No the Ready Action and the Magic Action are two completely different actions and both of them can be used to cast spells. Further this does not affect Haste at all because you can't take the ready action with Haste: "Choose a willing creature that you can see within range. Until the spell...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

Yes I know, but in this case he did not use a spell slot for either spell. The only real restriction is you must concentrate from the time you ready to the time you cast. So he could not have done this in reverse - Wall of Fire then Fireball as a Reaction, because he would have had to drop...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

Because readying an action to cast a spell does not use the magic action, it uses the Ready action. It also burns a reaction.

They did not change the ready action, they changed action surge to say you could take any action except the magic action.

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

So one of my players came up with a workaround today in a game I am DMing. The PC is an Eldritch Knight 6/Sorcerer 9. He used a staff of fire to fireball a group of Gith soldiers and then wanted to use it to action surge cast a wall of fire to prevent them from closing/damage them if they...

    D&D 5E (2024) 5.5 Fighter Best Eince 2E

BEcause stunning strike is supposedly better than QP and all the other things I listed. You are correct about a subclassless fighter it is 113 over 2 rounds if he action surges both rounds. The battlemaster is less than 200 over 2 rounds, it is 158 over 2 rounds because he only has 6 maneuver...
