Seminar Transcript - Reimagining Skills and Ability Scores

Dang it, I still can't give you more XP, and I've been spreading them around like crazy. Can somebody cover me?

Not me. I positively hate reskinning. It's lazy design.

Seminar Transcript - Reimagining Skills and Ability Scores

Aaaaannnnndddd... it's gone. My interest in D&D Next, that is. We have several deal breakers here, but the two critical ones are: 1. Using ability scores for everything instead of skills (this is COMPLETELY the opposite of what I want in ANY role-playing game) 2. NPCs don't follow the same...

    Damage Equivalence

10.5 is the average of 3d6, which I believe will be the ballpark of level 2 spells.

    Damage Equivalence

Ah, but Fireball deals ~18 damage to multiple opponents. I've had players affect up to 20 opponents with that spell, which is ~360 damage. So I don't think Charm Person will be all that high in level.

    Damage Equivalence

My heads hurts just thinking about it. It does make some sense, but I think it's wholly unnecessary. I'd like for Upper_Krust to chime in here.

"Much of Older D&D Material To Be Re-Released?"

I think that a print-version of Dungeon is a given, since it's one thing that WotC positively must have in order to compete with Paizo's adventure paths.

    Elminster's Forgotten Realms

That's because SKR did the rules updates, and SKR has a very good understanding of both the Realms and 3.x mechanics. He's not available this time, though.

D&D 5E (2014) So why are you buying 5th edition?

I'll be buying the core books out of sheer curiosity. We'll see if they impress me enough to continue buying supplements.

    D&D 5E (2014) The classes of 5e (now with 90% less speculation)

For the most part, they can be emulated by those two classes and multiclass combinations thereof. That's why I gave them both a huge makeover in my revision: Paladins Champions are nowhere near as proficient with weapons and armor as fighters are. However, they have supernaturally strong...

    Hobbits are Back!

    Me too.

    Hobbits are Back!

Elven perception of time is really different than ours. To a (classic) elf, what happened 500 years ago is but a generation away; he may have heard first-hand accounts from his parents or relatives. On the other hand, we (humans) have trouble determining the exact nature of events from just 100...

They tried that with 4E. It didn't work out. What they somehow didn't see is that there are pretty much two ways that young players are brought into the hobby: gaming stores (which WotC didn't really start supporting until late in the 4E game) and older (even lapsed) players who introduce their...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should 5E have Healing Surges?

Oh come on Frank, potion sellers were a staple even in 1e and 2e. The fun part was that you weren't really sure the potion did what the seller claimed it did, and testing the potions was no easy matter... ...and also, potion miscibility FTW.

    People have the strangest deal-breakers

I bought the 3 4E core rulebooks (and I already knew at the time that I had no interest in 4E), so there is no way that I am going to skip buying the 5E core rulebooks. Whether or not I decide to drop my Fatebinder system in favor of 5E is a different matter altogether.

Reforms so you don't need healing surges

As a part of the healing fix for my d20 revision, I boosted the Healing skill: First aid Action: Standard Check: Healing + Wis (DC 10) Take 10: No Take 20: No If you administer aid to yourself or an injured ally no later than 1 round after the injury has been sustained, you can restore a number...

D&D 4E 5E as a Rewritten 4E with Flavor Bits from Other Editions?

There's no way they'll use the 4E core. The 4E core comes with way too much baggage, particularly the way powers work and the way everything has to balance out. The way I see it: The core will be much simpler. It will define what the ability scores mean, how the characters progress, what the...

You know, no one has ever tried that in my games, but if they did, I'd probably allow an impromptu taunt check of some sort to distract the minotaur.

OTOH, I am very happy about it. Doubly so because it works on a minotaur (just as it does in my games). Ogres should not be out of reach of 1st level characters who employ teamwork and exploit the ogres' stupidity. Sounds like they got lucky with the minotaur. And I'm fine with that as well...
