Origins or histories of certain constructs

According to 2e (Planescape Monstrous Compendium Vol. I), Maruts were created by Hindu god Rudra to punish a noble who had escaped Rudra's plague by hiding in a sealed castle. Dragon #341 has an Ecology article on the Inevitables.

Player Wants to Play a Hawk

A Psionic Hawk would work in a RIFTS game without much trouble. In D&D, though? Nope.

How often do you include NPCs primarily for roleplaying reasons?

Gods, no. Here are some sample recent sessions from one of my campaigns: Session #1: While on a boat, the party is attacked by a virtually unkillable monster that desires an artifact they are carrying. PC mage does something clever, they manage to escape to a small island where they discover...

    The monster you fear most

I don't play enough to have learned to fear a particular type of monster... :( My players, however, have learned to fear kobolds and kobold lairs, hobgoblins, devils of all sorts, pseudonatural creatures, and, oh, stirges.

How often do you convert dungeons/adventures to your current system?

Fairly often (my current campaigns have incorporated about 3 converted adventures and bits and pieces from another 4-5).

How often do you include NPCs primarily for roleplaying reasons?

By that definition, 99% of NPCs I create are for non-combat purposes and I merely write down their level, alignment, distinguishing features, and motivations in my session prep notes. I'll only do a full write-up for NPCs that are likely to be encountered in combat.

How often do you include NPCs primarily for roleplaying reasons?

I am not sure I understand the question, what do you mean "primarily for roleplaying reasons?"

New Star Trek TV Series In Development

DS9 was by far my favorite of the original 4 ST series. I didn't watch Enterprise beyond the initial few episodes, and I found most of Voyager to be horrible (particularly because of the character of Janeway). I think the reason I liked DS9 more than the other shows is because it had a much...

Motivations of a winter goddess: any ideas?

I was aware of the relationship between Talos and Auril, but it didn't occur to me to weave it into the plot. I'll have to think of it some more.

    Evil DM Moments

I TPK'd the party five minutes after their Crowning Moment of Awesome. Also, as each round went by (usually resulting in the death of one of the resource-deprived PCs), I read them about the destinies of their former PCs, who were also dropping dead all across the globe at that very same...

Motivations of a winter goddess: any ideas?

Here's a little something I came up with... criticism would be most helpful: For centuries, Auril the Frostmaiden has rewarded her most faithful priestesses with a fraction of her divine power. These Chosen would then roam the North, seeking to bring eternal winter to Faerun. Inevitably, each...

    Seconded. I hate podcasts.

Motivations of a winter goddess: any ideas?

I'm sure that many of you are familiar with Auril, the FR goddess of winter, also known as the Frostmaiden. In one of the campaigns I'm running, I've hinted heavily that she is currently involved in a major plot, trying to manipulate the orcs of the North and other creatures into some scheme...

Legends & Lore: The Loyal Opposition

Sure, but it's journeyman level in "Strength Training." Unfortunately, you cannot build a ruleset around the idea that every DM will have to decide these things for himself. For instance, if the system has no skills by default, then adding skills would require the DM to rework every single...

Legends & Lore: The Loyal Opposition

This week's L&L is anticlimactic, I think Mike didn't really have much time to spend on the column. Anyways, I still strongly disagree with the idea that we can do away with all skills and just have "Strength training" and "Wisdom training." I honestly wouldn't want to play in a system that...

Coolest fighters in movies, and their non combat powers? 101 of em if we can.

I wouldn't classify Indy as a fighter; he's always been a rogue in my eyes.

Character prologues - Going beyond backgrounds

One session with this approach might work. But, then again, I've rarely encountered players who care much (or at all) about their characters' backgrounds - which is perfectly fine, since it leaves the door open for the DM to incorporate into the campaign at a later date. Five sessions of this...

    Multi-classing, yay or nay?

I agree that 3.x multiclassing is the best in D&D history, but spellcasters were nevertheless severely limited under the system. My own system revision resolves this by creating a number of feats that a multiclassed character can take to increase his effectiveness. These same feats also allow a...
