    Deity power level = Joke?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this picture. Deity's power level is only important when it comes to interactions with other deities. Nerfing clerics based on the power of their god was not a well-thought-out game design idea. If anything, from a logical perspective, clerics of...

Could we get a "Planescape" prefix?

Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? ;)

    Cannibal hillbilly dwarves!

They find a bunch of skeletons (the normal, dead kind), all shattered at the kneecaps and appear to have been gnawed on. One of the dwarves appears and invites them to the dinner. Definitely describe the hungry look in his eyes. The dwarves drug them (tiki torches laced with drugs are my...

    NPR's Top 100 SF&F books

Stuff that IMO most definitely doesn't belong on the list, quality-wise: 12. The Wheel Of Time Series, by Robert Jordan 24. 2001: A Space Odyssey, by Arthur C. Clarke (I always felt that this was one of Clarke's weakest books, and far inferior to the movie) 31. Starship Troopers, by Robert...

Qs for smaller publishers - where to start?

Excellent suggestion! Too bad I can't give you more XP at this time :(

    How keen is too keen?

It is my experience that you should listen to your gut feeling when it comes to situations like this.

    Dungeon Crawler Miniatures (DCMs)

To clue people in, Greyhaze is a long-standing member of the DDM community who runs the Plasticrypt site (once known as DDM Spoilers). Not sure about Dungeon Crawler, since I haven't played it, but as far as the minis side of the game is concerned, I am confident that Greyhaze knows what he is...

Qs for smaller publishers - where to start?

Excellent points, guys, you've really made me think about some aspects of the project which I haven't considered yet. What makes the product special? Good question. Here are some of the design goals I had in mind when working on the system: Solid core foundation that can be easily extended...

Qs for smaller publishers - where to start?

My current plan is to release the project in four phases (names are tentative): Basic: Level 1-6 Expert: Level 7-12 Master: Level 13-18 Immortal: Level 19+ Each release will include the core rules, information about advancing each of the eight classes within the provided level range, separate...

A new Planescape record - visiting 7 outer planes in one session

And here are the more detailed plans I made up (in my head). Hopefully, I'll get to use them Arcadia A dwarven batallion is holding its own against an invasion of formians. If the party agrees to help the dwarves, and the party fights without fear, accepting that they may die in defense of the...

A new Planescape record - visiting 7 outer planes in one session

Here's the original document I prepared for the session (that's pretty much ALL the prep work I did, story wise; "symbols" that are mentioned are parts of the key I wrote about in the first post): Arcadia Show that you are willing to sacrifice yourself for the common good. Hold the fort against...

You are correct, of course, and I apologize. I would like to state for the record that I did not report that post nor request any moderation on my behalf.

    (1) is something we can all agree on. However, I am vehemently opposed to (2). Skills represent a subset of abilities that a character can become better at. Skills are gradual and variable. Feats, OTOH, are binary - you either have them or you don't. Merging the two is not desirable, IMO.

New Mearls Article - Skills in D&D

I am honestly frustrated as hell because Mearls is moving in a direction which is completely opposite from my interests. His proposed rules look like something found in an OSR game (several people already commented on that), and not something found in a modern RPG. In fact, I know of several OSR...

New Mearls Article - Skills in D&D

Calling me a liar is grounds for reporting, but I'll let it slip since I think you don't know what "linear" means. Ask any mathematician. +5 per 2 points of Str which changes to +5 per 1 point of Str once Str hits 20 is not a linear function.

New Mearls Article - Skills in D&D

Good points. IMO, the variance is already reflected in the actual roll - no player can be 100% certain that his character will succeed (particularly if the system has fumbles or something similar), but they should be reasonably aware of how well their characters can perform certain activities...

New Mearls Article - Skills in D&D

You are arguing the counterpoint based on exactly the same statement. Besides: If that's not DM fiat, I don't know what is. "If," "usually," and "might" are the keywords there. Jack99 - the table is not linear. Your formula only applies up to Str 20. And it's the principle of the thing -...

New Mearls Article - Skills in D&D

Do the players know what those DCs are beforehand? When they create their characters? Does each DM have to come up with DCs on his own? Will there be continuity between different games? Is there a general set of guidelines for all DCs a la 4E (i.e. DCs tied to PC levels rather than objective...

New Mearls Article - Skills in D&D

Dude, I was being reasonable. But being funny is not working out here. The base DC for climbing ANYTHING is 7. Then I noted that the statue did not have ledges, but did have handholds (as you described it). That means the statue is effectively 17. Then add +5 because it's slippery, for a total...
