    Which Basic?

For me, ODD/LBB, B/X, BECMI, RC, 2e, etc. are easier to type than the developers' names. Likewise Holmes is quicker than Blue Book. As far as I'm concerned the authors for all of them are Gygax/Arneson anyway... the other names are just the employees that repackaged the work for different...

    Which Basic?

Got Holmes first, played B/X most. Well, I played AD&D most, but I used a lot of B/X rules.

    BECMI and Campaign Pacing

Are you rewarding xp for gold? Advancement is balanced with that in mind.

    A stat-boosting feat

I think you're underplaying it. It's not Weapon Focus (longsword), it's Weapon Focus (anything I touch). It's not Dodge, it's Dodge (*everyone). It's not Toughness, it's "I Effectively Have One Larger Die Type, Oh And My Saves And Concentration Are Better Too" (I think that's a Mongoose feat). A...

    Monster BAB and Ranged Weapons?

This varies by type actually. Undead, for example, can use all simple weapons. Outsiders get simple and martial.

Another "how do you read this" thread

I'm in for argument 1, based purely on the plain-english wording. I disagree. Seems to me that when they say "no two may be more than x apart," they might actually mean what they say. The reason they don't use radii is that for the most part (exclusively maybe?) these are targeted spells -...

    A stat-boosting feat

It's too good of a feat for non-epic levels. Sorry, but in many cases it's better than two or three existing feats. For Strength, it's better than any feat that gives a base +1 to hit or damage. It's essentially Weapon Focus (all) and Weapon Sorta-Specialization (all) rolled into one. For...

Why double on Power Attack with Two-handed?

Mathematics and balance - to keep it on par damage-wise with TWF. Also, Freud.

Which Published Settings Have You Played In?

For D&D games: Greyhawk Planescape** Dark Sun Forgotten Realms Al-Qadim** Ravenloft* Dragonlance** Wilderlands* Known World/Mystara Kara-Tur** * Only played, never DMed ** Only DMed, never played

Essentials and the future of D&D

Make-believe timelines are fun... 2010-2011 - Essentials does extremely well, 12 million copies over several printings are sold in Wal-Mart/Target/Toys'R'Us, but feedback from returning gamers indicate they were drawn in more by the Elmore cover and memories of the old edition than the new...

    How do YOU crit?

In 3.5 we just follow the rules: After you confirm the crit you roll damage once for each crit multiplier, adding all appropriate modifiers. Someone that with a strength bonus of 7 hitting with a greataxe (x3 crit) will do 3d12+21. Extra damage isn't multiplied, so if it was a frost greataxe...

    Halflings in full plate

Ever since I got some perspective on just how small and light a halfing is (having two kids), I just can't take the little things seriously any more. At least LotR hobbits had some heft to them. Something that small in plate just can't have the muscle mass to move full plate around. I know, I...

Fortune Cards: and randomized collectible cards come to D&D

n general, it seems you'll get a slight advantage using these, and that to use them as intended every player should buy a new pack each game. I can't fault WotC for the strategy, but it seems like they're trying to find ways to steady their revenue stream - you pay for some new thing every game...

    1st Edition: Random treasure generator?

Knight & Knaves has the old AD&D DOS programs up on their site, stickied in their By The Book AD&D section. Dragonsfoot also has one here.

    RPGs in Target!

Hope it works for them. Wizkids got their games into Target/Toys-R-Us/Wal-Mart and it didn't help a whit. Maybe if they put it near the pharmacy they can get nostalgic ex-gamers to buy it. Scribble's right about the satanism angle. Kids need to be told they can't have it before they'll want it.

    D&D 3.x Planescape 3.5 help!

Planescape isn't really a "TL: DR" kind of setting. It's the kitchen sink of D&D settings, so you're go to have to sit down and read the source material.

    Turning the World Upside Down

What's Twilight? "As far back as"? That movie isn't even two decades old. As far as I know they ripped off most of their ideas from Castlevania anyway.

What's going on inside flasks and vials?

New new theory - D&D designers gave up on proper weights and measures about 1974 (full potion vials weighed 3lbs back then IIRC).

    Turning the World Upside Down

Sounds fun, but I have to ask... how many "glitter" comments did you get from your players?

Can lower leveled characters use Epic Magic Items?

Caster level is used for determining the effects of most items (exception: staves), as well as the strength of an item's aura when using detect magic. Note that a strict reading of the DMG also says that it's also the minimum level you must be to craft those items, but this is no longer the case...
