Interesting criticism I found about us "RPG guys".

Even though it's not unique to RPGs, he's not wrong. People take the simplest criticism of a system as a personal attack. Others see two people disagreeing (or worse, agreeing incorrectly in the recent thread about the simplicity of a certain old school game) and jump in to defend/destroy the...

    D&D 3.x Random Encounter Chart Generator 3.5

"You must spread some Experience Points around before giving it to TheOverlord again." This (and your other generators) are a great resource. Thanks!

Do all NPCs in your game need to be statted out?

Well, I didn't want to seem too enthusiastic about it.

Do all NPCs in your game need to be statted out?

I'm not going to vote, since I don't think statting out an NPC somehow makes them fodder. NPC stats can make a difference not only in how I roleplay them, but can also have mechanical game effects. I like stats and I like randomness, yet I don't like randomly rolling out stats, so I usually...

Someone is Bringing Pizza to the Game Tonight

I like anchovies on any sort of pizza or salad. We don't do either for our game group though. It makes me so sad that my kids haven't developed a taste for them yet. They. Will. Learn. (to order halvsies) Heh - Sitting in olive central here. A good olive is a good olive, and a cheap olive is...

    AD&D 2E 2E Opinions

I recommend the revised over the original 2e books. The new layout was much easier (for me) to read and reference. There are still errors, but the majority have been corrected (they were also corrected in later printings of the originals, but that's hard to distinguish if you're buying online)...

"Can my spouse play for an evening?"

My house rule is no spectators, so it's not, "can she?" it's, "She has to if she wants to be here."

D&D 3.x [3.5] CHALLENGE: Best way to hide/protect an item

Whoops, my bad. Of course then the xp cost should be 9,600. More of Skip Williams' awesome editorial powers?

D&D 3.x [3.5] CHALLENGE: Best way to hide/protect an item

I'm not the OP, but a lich presumably has the resources to retrieve any item destroyed by a party of 6th level characters... wish is the first that comes to mind if the lich is a high-level wizard. Or, for about the same xp and with four months time the lich could just make another one.

    Blindness/Deafness in AD&D

Blindness is defined in the AD&D DMG under the additional notes for the spell light: -4 to hit, -4 to saves, and -4 to AC. According to the description for the gem of brightness, partial blinding can result in similar penalties, using a d4 to determine the exact severity. AD&D 2e gives the same...

    Easily print scaled maps?

Campaign Cartographer 2 prints to scale. For maps I don't make I just import the bitmap, measure a square and then resize according to a little simple math I'm not sure if it's easier or harder with more recent versions of CC.

Wands of healing: individual purchase or party purchase (please read before voting)

I'm usually a DM, so my opinion doesn't matter much. That said, I think the party should shell out if they want a wand to be used for party benefit - this applies to more than just healing wands too. I'd feel the same way about thieves' tools and the like if they cost a bundle and had charges as...

What are you a minority about?

I read about D&D, other RPGs and other games outside of playtime/preptime. I don't think it's any surprise to anyone (except the original planners of DDI ) that reading messageboards and blogs for ideas on gaming and gaming philosophy is a very minority activity.

What normally happens after a TPK?

I agree completely. To see the idea of a campaign defined down so narrowly deserved comment IMO. I voted the first option - I've done that for 2 out of 3 TPKs. The first time I did the old "you awaken three days later in a prison cell," and the second some players arranged to save their old...

    Never Played 1st Edition

The Dungeon Master's Guide certainly was easier to read back when there weren't any alternatives. ;) Give it a try, ignore and gloss over the irritating bits and take in the thing as a whole. It's a very good book. I'd say the best way to learn is to play in someone else's campaign. That's...

Is Dying Such a Bad Thing?

Ah, I see. It's THAT kind of conversation. You're wearing a macrame belt. I say I don't like macrame belts. You claim I'm declaring people who wear macrame belts are badwrongpeople. I guess I was being derogatory ("hippy dippy everything is equal land") after the fact, because irreverent...

Is Dying Such a Bad Thing?

Right. I guess I wasn't clear then. We suspend our disbelief so we can experience the thrill that the story could end badly at any moment... even though we know there are still 300 pages to scroll through. The thrill, for me, is the point of reading adventure fiction - I'm certainly not reading...

What normally happens after a TPK?

Interesting. The only assumption seems to be that campaign = mission/story/quest, not campaign = adventures in a setting. Very narrow view, that.

Is Dying Such a Bad Thing?

Well, I was referring to certain types of bad TV shows - especially syndicated shows that require a certain status quo be maintained so the episodes can be shown in any order. There generally is more at stake in other forms of fiction, but in good adventure fiction, lasting harm can and does...

Is Dying Such a Bad Thing?

:hmm: Fine. Assuming you're not just being glib because "wank" is a juvenile word that invites equally juvenile drive-bys, why does character death even matter? If we're in hippy dippy everything is equal land... why does there even need to be a rulebook, a screen, or even a group? Should I...
