D&D 5E (2014) Raise your hand if your mom...

We were already playing a bit by the time my mom overheard us playing and the DM told me I wasn't allowed to look in one of the books. So she bought me the Holmes set. Damned if she was going to let someone tell me what I could and couldn't read. I did know two people at my JR. High and High...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does RAW have a place in 5e?

Hi Ron. Can't believe someone's trying to out-old you, PA "nerd cred" attack to boot! Five minutes penalty in a booth with Terry Austin and OGURBOY!

D&D 5E (2014) Are blackguards and oath breaker paladins the same?

Well, at least most people won't mispronounce oath breaker...

Which monster books do you own?

Wish I still had my copy of All The Worlds Monsters 1. It was to 1E what the Creature Catalog was to 3E... lower quality, but quicker to market. I didn't get mine until long after the AD&D Monster Manual was out... I saw both in a game store as a kid and the choice was obvious.

    D&D 5E (2014) Bone Devil

Now I can never unsee that. Suddenly looks 2" tall.

    D&D 5E (2014) Bone Devil

Looks like a cross between a Bloodthirster from Warhammer and Wayne Reynold's bone devil from L3. I prefer this creepy old thing: The 4E version just looked like pumpkinhead with a tail, right?

    D&D 5E (2014) Preview: Thri-Kreen

I know it's been a while since they changed them, but I really don't like thri-kreen as bipeds.

4 out of 5 rating for Hoard of the Dragon Queen

Puff puff puff. Exclamations and bullet points. Reads like it was paid for.

    D&D 5E (2014) What's your preferred "Splat Frequency"?

Put out what the system needs in the first year. Keep the books in print and shut down WotC. Hand the keys to the fans.

D&D 5E (2014) Halfling rogue sniping from the the second rank

Up until the last two versions of D&D thieves generally didn't get more than one stealth attack per fight. Then they twisted the word "Sneak" so hard I'm surprised it didn't snap. Don't know about 4, but in 3 you could be be under the effect of Faerie Fire, covered in skunk juice, and shouting...

D&D 5E (2014) Starter set cover art meh?

I like it as art, but I do agree that it makes some blunders advertising itself. Product looks like "Starter Set" not "Dungeons and Dragons." Production issues are also at play - the physical covers do look murkier than the online samples. When the site owner pulls out the bandwagon approach to...

D&D 5E (2014) Lots Of Art (and some Warlock stuff)

Well, a lot of people are hoping they got it right this time. Pointing that out in on an editorial-focused site like boing2 is not exactly edition warring - it's just opinion. Sometimes we have to go out and look at the unmoderated world and realize it's okay to talk about what we think.

D&D 5E (2014) Basic rules paperback tweeted by Morrus

While I think it's perfectly OK to get PODs with or without publisher permission (and good luck with your rep if you try to stop it!), how are people thinking this had zero profit? The person who uploaded it saw zero return, sure, but Lulu's not a charity.

1st Edition MM Excerpts: Classic Monsters

Can't remember where in the book it exactly was without going through them (probably MM2), but for monsters with hit points instead of hit dice, you divide by 4.5 to find their equivalent hit dice. In any case, Appendix E in the DMG provides the THAC0 for most every monster in the MM (minus...

    Unexpected fun in 1st edition

No worries, I've already printed off a raft of them for my DM binder and applied an analog solution (ye olde marker pen) to add in some personal touches.

    Unexpected fun in 1st edition

I use a PC myself. The current format is fine, I'd just love to be able to use it offline and especially tinker with the data (I allow a lot of custom multi-class combos, and all races can multi-class in my campaign).

"Look what I made! OSRIC Henchmen Generator" I love this thing. Any chance of an offline/editable version?

    The One Hour D&D Game

I think it will be much easier to monetize a one-hour game than a four-hour one.
