D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

For a good chunk of the D&D Next playtest, Wizards had 3e-style Vancian casting where you had to prepare each individual slot, and the 5e-style “flexible Vancian” was a Cleric and Druid thing, while Bards and the half-casters were spells-known type casters and Sorcerers and Warlocks got their...

D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

I think the proper term for warlock magic would be witchcraft.

Geologically, most of the Caribbean islands are on their own small tectonic plate, separate from both the North American and South American plate, which the southern part of Central America is also on. Some of them are on the North American plate though, so if you were going to connect it to one...

It’s BC, not BA. Stands for British Columbia.

That’s a bit odd, since “central” America is part of the continent North America. Like, there are reasons to refer to Central America independently from the rest of North America, but you don’t need a special term to refer to it collectively along with the US and Canada, because that term...

Well, as a fellow Eaglelander I can’t answer that from an outside perspective, but in my experience “the Americas” is a pretty common turn of phrase to refer to both continents together, yes.

It’s part of the continent North America, but people don’t generally refer to that as just “America,” whereas the United States of America does often get referred to that way.

D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

Yeah, it’s a bit embarrassing that I know this, but canonically magic is genetic in the Potterverse. Yes, muggleborn wizards are a thing, but they arise because of recessive magic genes passed down from some magical ancestor somewhere in the bloodline. Likewise, squibs are people born of magical...

D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

I like the underlying idea of wizardry as a formalized, institutionalized means of magical education more associated with settled cultures vs. sorcery as a more informal, personalized or even independent means of magical development, more associated with mobile cultures. I would probably frame...

To be fair, most folks can’t tell their Victorian from their Edwardian from their turn of the century American, etc. It’s all just “post-industrial old-timey.” And most folks treat “steampunk” as meaning scifi/fantasy with a post-industrial old-timey aesthetic.

I got real good at Soul Caliber 2 in like… 2003 or 2004. Never before or since will I dedicate that much time and energy to a fighting game.

D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

I think you’ve gotten the cause and effect reversed there. The different casting mechanics are excuses for making them three distinct classes. Why did they want to make them three different classes in the first place? Because they were three different classes in older editions. One of the design...

D&D General Friday Fun: Explain A D&D Thing Badly

Ok, you know those things… what are they called? They’re from like Celtic mythology I think. Or English? Knuckle-something, I think…? Like a guy on a horse, but he’s got a pumpkin for a head, you know? All Sleepy-hollow style. Anyway, imagine that, but just the head. Only it’s not a pumpkin - I...

D&D 5E (2024) 5e GMs: Do/Have/Would You Start Above 1st Level? (Note: Cannot change your vote.)

I have started 5e campaigns at levels 1, 3, 5, and 11. Level 1 is my favorite place to start, but there are lots of good reasons to start at other levels, including simply “we felt like it.” It’s one of those things like theme, mood, tone, and initial character ideas that should be discussed at...

And here I am, thinking that campaign logistics are the most directly gamified aspect of the RPG and high adventure the most directly role play focused aspect of the RPG and that both are crucial to the experience.

It was interesting to hear Brendan Lee Mulligan say in the CR4 fireside chat that, if it weren’t for streaming, he’d still be running 3.5e. I think the fans are out there, they just aren’t as vocal.

This is a more cogent argument than that it’s no longer medieval fantasy because there are handlebar mustaches. That said, it’s not like the aesthetics not being the same as they were in 1975 is a sudden and unexpected turn of events. The aesthetics of D&D have never been consistent, because...
