    Roll for Effect or Intent?

Both 5e PHBs say the players describe what they want to do. A want is an intention. The rules don’t state it in terms of goal and approach, but they do seem to be saying, in casual language, that the player is not just declaring an action but an intention. Sure, in which case just don’t call...

    Roll for Effect or Intent?

I hadn’t voted because the options are nonsense. But since you insisted, I voted for “other.” That being both things are required to have a coherent action.

Saving throws should be skills too, IMO.

D&D General D&D weapons vs reality

I understand. The Lion King made us all feel ways we didn’t fully understand. Disney in general really seemed to want to make my generation (milennials) into furries.

D&D General D&D weapons vs reality

I don’t think of myself as a facial hair person (I’m bi, but I generally prefer more feminine traits). But, there does seem to be a correlation between guys I find attractive and slight facial hair. Maybe it’s not the hair itself that attracts me, but that facial hair style just happens to be...

D&D General D&D weapons vs reality

5.24e almost got it right with the revised Heavy property, but they make it a Dex requirement for ranged weapons instead of Strength for both ranged and melee.

True. He and Milo Rossi (aka miniminuteman) are my YouTube crushes lol. Apparently slim, fit, nerdy, and funny with just a bit of facial hair is my type.

    Roll for Effect or Intent?

I don’t understand this dichotomy at all. Every action should have both an intent and an approach to trying to achieve it. A roll is called for to resolve uncertainty in whether the approach succeeds in achieving the intent or not. You can’t divorce one from the other.

D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

I most often run 5e. I have run 4e, but that was before I’d been turned onto this style, though I’d be interested in giving it another try with the benefit of what I’ve learned since then. Ran a fair bit of what’s now called Chronicles of Darkness. A smattering of Call of Cthulhu. Read some PbtA...

D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

But it doesn’t indicate that any part of what you described is worth paying attention to. That is definitely not my expectation. “Searching the fireplace” is not even a complete action declaration, as it lacks a goal. It’s also not what I would call reasonably specific. Yes, and depending on...

D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

Well the players can’t really be expected to probe and interact with something they don’t even know is there. Again, maybe with a group of OSR veterans, they might just probe anything and everything as part of their standard procedures because they're used to anything being able to be a trap...

D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

I gotta push back on this a bit. Obvious is good when it comes to challenging the players in this sort of context. Unless the players are very experienced with this sort of play (which most of the 5e playerbase is not), they need obvious to have any chance of noticing the trap. Also, even with a...

D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

The way to challenge the player as opposed to challenging the character with traps is to make the detection and disarming of the trap a matter of the player paying attention to the description of the environment, making reasonable deductions based on that description to determine the presence of...

D&D General Take A Look At The Class Boards From The New D&D Starter Set

I do think it’s more likely the latter. The kinds of trackers I’m thinking of are mostly made by independent creators on like Etsy or whatever, which tend to have next to no marketing.
