Building a PC, need some advice.

I'll second Rl'Halsinor's advice, especially #1! The power supply is badly underestimated by most folks. Also Schporto's good tip on Ars Technica's buying guides. I used Ars's guides to build my system, but I made a couple of tweaks to favor a quiet system. (See http://silentpcreview.com/ for...

    How to find ColdFusion developers

Consider lowering the pay slightly and training someone into it. Getting someone with related skills or good potential could really pay off for you. Those other skills could help your company transition to a new platform as well. Alternatively, raise the pay. Make sure you're competitive. You...

    DnD'ers make better Network Engineers?

That's not really what he's saying. He's saying D&D and the job of a Network Engineer are similar in many ways. Structured environments are easier to move in than unstructured ones. That's why people play D&D instead of sitting in a circle telling each other stories they just made up, and why...

The VCH list (Very Common Houserules)

There's a heck of a lot of house rules to round up... Tumble is an opposed check (this comes in a variety of forms), not a flat DC. Diplomacy is an opposed check, not a flat DC. Rich Burlew's Diplomacy rule: http://www.giantitp.com/Func0010.html Substitute Strength for Charisma when making...

PC Gaming & Dual Core Processors?

After you mentioned the patches, I found a HardOCP thread about it. It really looked like you only want to run the various patches if you're having performance problems. It also sounded like the patches tend to affect different games in different ways - some improve and some worsen. My advice is...

    Remote desktop connection?

I agree with Redrobes, but I'm a lot less optimistic about it. Going to Brazil you're going to get some serious lag. The movie is going to look like stop-motion video. It's going to work a lot better to send her a copy and start it at the same time while chatting on skype or something. Also I'm...

PC Gaming & Dual Core Processors?

He's implying the opposite. Dual core CPUs are widespread and relatively cheap for the midrange market. The Pentium 4 is overpriced. The Intel Core Duo 2 is a better deal, but you're not looking to replace your mainboard (right?) so that's not really an option. Likewise, reasonably priced...

PC Gaming & Dual Core Processors?

I'm on XP with a Dual Core Athlon 64 X2 4200+, and I hadn't even HEARD of a patch until now. My system is rock solid. I don't think I've had a single crash since I built it 6 months ago. Could someone link the patches in question? I'd like to check them out.

    Weird problem with Firefox

My suggestion is to back up your bookmarks, note your settings and uninstall firefox completely. Also delete the c:\Documents and settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Firefox folder. Then install the latest version and re-import your bookmarks. Starting from scratch like this should eliminate the...

    Hooray for CCleaner!

It's an excellent program. I make computer images for deployment at my workplace, and I run CCleaner right before I take the image. It cleans off a lot of junk that just doesn't need to be there. You can use those advanced features to reset certain things in Windows when they get goofed up.

    Battlefist Questions

A battlefist is technically worn. Think of it as a spiked gauntlet that also counts as an unarmed attack. It can be used to make iterative attacks. I'm not sure if it's possible to iterate a slam, but I think it probably is.

SRD monsters in the new statblock format

Dalamar, have you considered setting up a wiki to do this? Many hands make light work. All this info is already in the SRD so I don't think there would be any legal problems. You can get a free hosted wiki from several places, including http://www.wikia.com .

    Ultimate Alliance Marvel RPG help

I've played that game a bit, but not that part. I think it wasn't particularly sensitive about where you hit triggers, but remember some characters are stronger than others. Do you have any of the REALLY strong guys, like Thing or Thor? If it's not that, then I bet there's something you're...

    Speeding up combat?

Replacing your init rolls with static numbers might actually slow things down more. You're going to end up with a lot of duplicate numbers between 9 and 18 or so, and you'll have to stop and compare bonuses to decide who goes first. You may as well just stick with the roll. In our group, the...

    Speeding up combat?

Make every player type out their own sheet of the rules for cover, grapple, disarm, etc... If they write it out themselves, they will hopefully have paid more attention to it, and can refer to their personal and very familiar cheat sheets. Also, have your players with different weapon types and...

    New Daylight Savings Time updates....

Windows Update has the DST update marked critical, so if you're using a (legit) copy of XP, 2003 or Vista, you can just run the updates and it'll be taken care of. If you're running Windows 2000 or earlier, there is no DST update, but you can find some info on manually correcting it. Macs have...
