    Laser or Inkjet Printer?

Yah, I just skimmed the thread, so I missed your analysis. And like I said, I never looked back. Lasers have another benefit - they're usually repairable. Most inkjets can't be repaired if something breaks.

    Laser or Inkjet Printer?

 Inkjet printers are wretched, wretched crap. They're a trick to get you to keep buying more ink. Inkjet printers are a razor, ink is the blade. They give the printers away cheap because it gets you to buy more ink. If you buy a new inkjet every time your old one runs out of ink, you...

Bring back the FanCC downloads please

Thanks for doing this, Big Mac. There's quite a few former FANCC members on EN World, and it's nice to see that the stuff is still appreciated. I think I've still got NBO Traps. At least I hope I do, since I helped write it. I'll check when I get home.

    Rogue-like Reccomendations please

 DF has a learning curve 10 times that of Nethack. Maybe adventure mode is easier to figure out, but no game on earth is worth putting that much effort into.

    [Windows Help] Desktop cleanup

As a quick rule of thumb, anything in the Desktop Cleanup folder can be safely deleted without compromising your system, because your computer and installed programs should be smart enough to not install critical things there. Specifically, anything that says "shortcut to" or has an arrow in...

    Character sheets for Mac

Did you try Darwine? It's an application compatability layer that lets you run windows apps on Macs, without needing windows installed. It's free. It'll still be slow because you've got a PPC laptop, but there's no way to get around that.

    DM Help: Puzzle vault

When I saw "cousin of the crest", I immedately thought "relative of the noble family", but I can see how someone else might think of the griffon first. Ooh, that last part is going to drive them nuts. If they miss the first clue about the number of letters there's no way they'll figure it out...

    odd computer problem.

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Some laptops have "media capabilities" that allow them to boot into a mode where they can play music and such, but it doesn't sound like they have a laptop. One, are they ACTUALLY turning the computer off, or just pushing the power button on the monitor...

    software question

You're probably fine legally for the reasons others already said. In any case, your Apple software updates don't check to see if you have office installed, and I don't think the office updates even do any checking. Microsoft is surprisingly non-invasive when it comes to licensing everything but...

Advice for getting rid of a virus

Not really, if you take reasonable precautions. Just make sure the virus scanner on the system you boot from is up to date, and don't open files from the infected hard drive until it's clean.

Advice for getting rid of a virus

Frankly, if this is an option for you, you should do it. Booting up from a different device is really the only way to be sure you've actually gotten the virus out. You might be able to boot his computer into safe mode, copy the latest virus updates on it with a CD or USB drive, update McAffee...

    Character sheets for Mac

You could also try Darwine (the WINE port for Mac OS), which would let you install a PC version of Office without having to run a full virtual machine and install Windows. You'd still have to have a copy of Office. Darwine - News A coworker of mine buys old software at garage sales and...

    Rogue-like Reccomendations please

Nethack is a real classic, but it can be kind of jarring to play if you've never played a game composed of ascii characters. The tile sets make it pretty OK tho. Here's a list of other games. Roguelike - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    EN World on Google Chrome

There are two kinds of google betas - stuff that isn't finished, and stuff they can't legally support fully. Chrome is the first kind. There's no reason at all they can't fix all the bugs and call it done. Google News is a permanent beta. It's basically done, they'll just get sued to death by...
