Experience Points and D&D Economy - What I'd Like To See

Just out of curiosity... why? Money is a common MOTIVE for Conan, Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, but none of them ever seem to be able to keep/do much with it prior to Conan becoming King of Aquilonia (and even then, he started his reign by cutting taxes, so he must not have been exactly lining...

Experience Points and D&D Economy - What I'd Like To See

I like both of these concepts for a new system, especially the much reduced XP totals. There's no difference between needing 100 XP to level up and getting 10 XP per encounter and needing 10,000 XP to level up and getting 1,000 XP per encounter, except that the former is faster and easier to do...

Do you play in games you aren't enjoying?

Absolutely not. I don't need to suffer through bad gaming to hang out with friends; I could do other things that would assist rather than impede my enjoyment - and likely theirs, as well. I'm having trouble imagining how that could be desirable or even sensible. No gaming is far, far better...

Who Do You Want Illustrating 4th Ed.?

I would like to see a set that, unfortunately, would almost certainly be insanely expensive and would very much up the "D&D is turning into video games!!!" and "D&D is turning into anime!!!" quotient. As to the former, when it comes to art direction, you say that like it's a BAD thing. :D As...

Do you like Warforged in your Forgotten Realms?

Possibly true. Possibly also why, aside from the Red Wizards, I'm not terribly keen on FR. ;) Oh, I agree, they FIT just fine. It's not that putting them in FR takes something away from FR, it's that it takes some of the uniqueness from Eberron. For my purposes, the Eberron specific thing...

What would you like to see brought back from older editions?

Spelljammer. Probably Dark Sun and Ravenloft, as well.

Do you like Warforged in your Forgotten Realms?

As shock troops purchased from Eberron by Thayan spelljammers, which the Red Wizards desperately want to reverse-engineer? Yes. As home-grown FR natives? No. Orcs aren't native to Krynn. Warforged aren't native to Abeir-Toril. Draconians aren't native to Eberron. Mixing and matching just...

    Earlier Then Planned?

Conan isn't a 3.5 product. It's an OGL system unto itself, and is considerably less compatible with D&D material than, say, d20 Modern or Star Wars Saga. It's probably about as far from D&D as Spycraft is from Modern, possibly further. While their announcement obviously got overshadowed...

Actual age of the 4th edition player base

I have no data on which to speculate. On ENWorld, it's 35, IIRC. In my local group, it would be about 30 - but that's an average taken from 14-70. My guess is that antecdotal evidence from the ENWorld community will skew toward 35, since many (most?) gaming groups seem to be comprised largely...

    [October] What are you playing?

Civ IV and Heroes 3, as usual. I'm hoping to have time to dedicate to finishing Front Mission 4, but that game demands more concentration than I can afford to give it right now... :\

One (Awesome) Gamer's Perspective: My Hobby is Gaming

Definitely 'gaming.' And I have a similar reaction to 4e - it's not a matter of 'switching' or 'not switching,' it's a matter of adding another game to my library of options. D&D, or at least d20, holds a slightly more important place in the pantheon because I write a lot for it, but it...

D&D 4E What period of D&D art would you most like to see 4E emulate?

One thing I absolutely DON'T want to see is a mix of styles. I'd rather see the lamest 1e/OD&D-style scrawls applied consistently than a jumble of styles cribbed from each incarnation of D&D. Lack of clear, consistent art direction results in a product that's bland at best, visually incoherent...

Dungeon crawl skirmishes: DESCENT vs. DDM

Keep in mind, however, that this is likely to be 'Magic the Gathering incompatible:' all the old miniatures will still be usable under the new rules, there will be a free and widely promulgated update document, and the changes to the system will not alter basic gameplay elements. Considering...

    Playtest Characters

I'd be pretty shocked if the Warlock wasn't an Arcane Striker. The Wizard pretty much defines the role they're calling Controller, and the Warlock primarily excels at blasting (of single targets, no less), which seems to be the Striker's schtick.

What new rules did you like?

Flavor text matters!!! OMG111!! Seriously, though, I don't think I can get behind ANY of those statements. I don't feel that strongly about the various mechanics under discussion. :D

Dungeon crawl skirmishes: DESCENT vs. DDM

Fair enough. I'm very critical of board games that last 5-6 hours for two reasons: IMX, that's way more time than most non-RPGers want to devote to a game, and very few board games provide sufficient variety of experience to remain compelling that long. Correct. DDM out of the box is not a...

What new rules did you like?

Between the frenetically hyperbolic choices and the rather limited list of mechanics discussed, I didn't actually answer the poll. To address the mechanics listed here: AFFILIATIONS Could go either way. DEVOTION FEATS Don't have Complete Champion. DIVINE FEATS Should die, along with turn...

Dungeon crawl skirmishes: DESCENT vs. DDM

My take: DDM is a much better game. Descent has the rare distinction of being a board game where clearing a dungeon can actually take longer than in most mainstream RPGs. I really wanted to like it, and it's a GORGEOUS production (possibly worth it for the tiles alone if you don't have a good...

D&D 4E Are there still going to be Alignment requirements for core classes in 4E?

I'm not advocating the 'restricted talent tree' approach, per say. I certainly wouldn't design a game with an alignment system and have not IIRC written any mechanics that interacted with alignment for D&D. With that said, if you define Undead as Evil-by-default, as D&D currently does, USING...

D&D Cosmology: the old and the new. Where do you stand?

Very few of my campaigns have involved planar travel, in part BECAUSE I dislike the Great Wheel. I've had campaigns involve Faerie before, and sometimes to parallel universes, but didn't consider these 'planar adventuring.' I've occasionally GMed expeditions to the elemental planes, and, IIRC...
