We always roll in front of the DM or.. let him roll it... abilities in front of the dm and the others... while HD 's mainly done by the DM... (sometimes open sometimes closed, that way a DM can modify the poor 1 on a d12 to 3 etc..)

monsters aren't limited the same way as characters are.. if a dragon wihth 15 HD takes 6 class levels... the 6th will be Epic'd (i'd say) normally a monster isn't epic'd .. they dont use the epic rules and caps for attacks and such (i am certain at least the 3.0 monster manual said something...

I thought the familiar died together with the master... as they share the bonds of life.. If the familiar dies.. the wizard has lost some of his "soul" needing to use a year of grieve to get a new one...
