D&D 5E (2014) Meaningful Consequences of Failure for Picking Locks

I'm not so sure I would go so far as to prohibit retrying, but perhaps requiring a short rest before retrying, and if the retry fails require a long rest before retrying again... ...and the threat of Wandering Monsters is always good to keep them on their toes.

D&D 5E (2014) EXP Complaint leads me to this idea.

Yeah, I tend to see this as a players nostalgia coloring their perspective... However, that being said, your concept is not without merit. The main side-effect I would expect out of making this change to leveling is that the players accumulation of magic items and/or material wealth would likely...

    D&D 5E (2014) Encumbrance Variant

I use the variant encumbrance as written, and it works very well. If you want to carry a bunch of gear, and wear heavy armor, you're going to want to get yourself a horse... Or unarmored opponents will outmaneuver you or be able to run away... and that's exactly what should be happening.

    D&D 5E (2014) Should I Keep My Volo's Guide

...I'm glad I'm not the only one that has had to do this with the kids. :D

D&D 5E (2014) Making Intelligence less of a dump stat

Well, you could always eliminate "Common" as a language... And bring back the "languages known" mechanic. That would suddenly make Intelligence much more relevant.

D&D 5E (2014) Capricious Home Rules and DM Pet Peeves

I have gotten out of the habit of banning things or restricting player choices, but I do like using many of the optional rules. I will say however that even though I may not veto player choices when they build their characters, I do inform them that the game-world & the NPCs don't necessarily...

    D&D 5E (2014) Concentration while Short Resting

I think this is a good suggestion for folks that have voiced concerns about the fact that concentration spells can be maintained during rests...

D&D 5E (2014) Eliminating darkvision from most races

I'm not suggesting that Underdark dwellers are walking around holding light sources and making themselves easy to spot. I am saying that humanoids would use strategic placement of stationary light sources in underground environment. Thereby enabling them to remain concealed in darkness, while...

D&D 5E (2014) Eliminating darkvision from most races

Your point about torches is exactly why an all darkvision party is not an advantage for the players, because even if the PCs are not carrying light sources, I would expect the inhabitants of Dungeons & Underdark environments to utilize strategic placement of light sources (Torches...

D&D 5E (2014) Eliminating darkvision from most races

I am surprised by some of these expectations surrounding the utility of darkvision, and I don't see why any race that possesses darkvision as it is presented in the game wouldn't want to have just as many light sources around as the non-darkvision races. Has anyone considered how utterly...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Good Players Do Not 14.25.

Ok, I'm sorry that I misunderstood what you were trying to say. Thanks for helping me to understand your thought process more clearly.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Good Players Do Not 14.25.

This speaks directly to the creation of believable, interactive game world, where players choices matter... creativity is necessary & rewarded... A game world that is populated by NPCs/Monsters that have appropriate survival instincts, are ready, willing, and able to adapt to changing...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Good Players Do Not 14.25.

Ah, I see. I'm sorry to hear that your DM experimented with a cure that was worse than the disease. I have certainly had similar missteps as a DM, and it took a lot of practice, but as with everything in life moderation is the key. Like I said in my previous post, that kind of an adjustment...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Good Players Do Not 14.25.

Almost... Except you totally did say that, when you very specifically said: So, you literally said that you that you think the game is about being "competitive", and that the other character is doing more damage and is therefore doing "better" than you at the game. I'm not putting words in...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Good Players Do Not 14.25.

Variety is the spice of life. So, yeah if were DMing I would have some encounters with very high ACs... and I would absolutely have some encounters with fire immune creatures, and I would have some encounters that encouraged spellcasters to adapt to circumstances by using hypnotic pattern or...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Good Players Do Not 14.25.

The main point that is trying to be made is that the D&D game is not designed as a competitive zero-sum tactical board game, it is designed as a cooperative survival story-driven game... The character with the highest damage output is not "better" than the other characters at the table, and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Good Players Do Not 14.25.

I almost feel like I'm just beating a dead horse with this post, but it's starting to seem like it may have had an Animate Dead spell cast on it... So, I'm going to lay out two points on this thread: 1. A perceived consensus surrounding an inherently flawed premise is irrelevant when trying to...

D&D 5E (2014) Tales from the Yawning Portal: A better title would be "Nezram's tales of adventure".

The very next morning... Nezram: "Oh, good you adventurers are still here! When I got up to my room I was so aggravated I decided I'd rather sleep when I'm dead, and seriously considered turning you into a toad. But, you're in luck, I'm a very forgiving wizard, and since your ears don't work so...

D&D 5E (2014) Tales from the Yawning Portal: A better title would be "Nezram's tales of adventure".

Why not just split the difference and rationalize to yourself that Nezram is the one regaling his tales while at the Yawning Portal? Nezram: "All you adventurers have it easy these days! You think that Undermountain is the ultimate dungeon?! You just kick back have a few brews and hop down a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Guidance on Illusion spells

Well, my most immediate suggestion would be to steer away from illusions that monsters want to attack, since the Illusion merely needs to be some visible phenomenon no larger than a 15-foot cube... However, as a DM I wouldn't have allowed the attack to "hit" the illusion since Illusions do not...
