D&D 5E (2014) Helping melee combat to be more competitive to ranged.

I think I just realized two factors why I don't see Ranged combatants as superior to Melee combatants: Encumbrance and Minions.

D&D 5E (2014) Paladin Find Steed Spell Question

I agree with Crawford's DM ruling on this. I've never seen encumbrance rules as detracting from the fun of the game. Quite the contrary, I see it as an essential part of game balance.

D&D 5E (2014) Paladin Find Steed Spell Question

After reading the spell description, I would say that only the steed would disappear or be summoned by the spell, not any equipment. The spell specifies that the steed is a spirit, so I would think that eating/drinking would not be required of it.

    D&D 5E (2014) XP for gold 5th Edition campaign

I think this approach to XP awards has a lot of potential.

D&D 5E (2014) Sacred Cow Bites The Dust.

If I recall correctly the AD&D 2nd Edition books had tables for this concept.

An excellent read for academically oriented Orcs:

D&D 5E (2014) Helping melee combat to be more competitive to ranged.

CapnZapp, the part of your post that I quoted speaks to part of what I was driving at in my previous post. I think the mechanics of the 5e system hold up very well to high-level game play. However, the DM Tool-Box (PHB, DMG, and MM) doesn't really provide the tools to challenge optimized...

D&D 5E (2014) Helping melee combat to be more competitive to ranged.

I hear you Hawkeyefan, I've never wanted any hand holding and it is very easy to make modifications. But, we're viewing this through the lens of a seasoned DM that has played through every edition of the game. The flip-side of this, is that I've seen time and time again, people struggle when...

D&D 5E (2014) Helping melee combat to be more competitive to ranged.

I an attempt to prevent this thread from completely derailing, I'm dropping back in to say that I whole-heatedly agree with CapnZapp's wish that the Monster Manual was a stronger tool-box for building dynamic encounters. Specifically, it should have encounter examples that are designed to...

D&D 5E (2014) Sacred Cow Bites The Dust.

I've found that players focus more on story, immersion, and stronger role-playing once XP is taken out of the equation, my table gave up on XP decades ago. I understand the appeal of the XP award system for Organized play, but not as much for house-games.

    D&D 5E (2014) Longswords

Disclaimer: I didn't read through the entire thread. Here's my first thought for a house-rule to make the Elves actually want to use Longswords... Have Elves treat Longswords as a Finesse weapon.
  13. Cyrinishad

D&D 5E (2014) Helping melee combat to be more competitive to ranged.

I reread the thread and noticed that the pro-Ranged positions revolve around tactical scenarios that have no tactical obstructions (terrain/line-of-sight/etc.), and presume nearly infinite ammunition resources. I readily concede that Ranged attacks will be far superior given these circumstances...

    Point taken.

    :erm: I stand corrected.

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlock Hex Question

The Hex spell absolutely ends if there is no target to transfer it to when the target drops to zero. ...and yeah. Dropping concentration and components as requirements is definitely not the way to go.

D&D 5E (2014) Helping melee combat to be more competitive to ranged.

I think this sums up are crucial difference in our perspective, in that I think that these roles are not outside the scope of this discussion... If those other roles did not exist, and the game were entirely a DPR calculation then I might concede to the assertions made by the OP and the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why can’t I find anything wrong with 5e?

    Well said... I think 5e is a home-run.

D&D 5E (2014) Helping melee combat to be more competitive to ranged.

I think comparing Melee efficacy versus Ranged efficacy is faulty when using Damage Output as the premise. The pro-Ranged positions also specified that Melee taking damage undermined its efficacy, which I similarly believe is faulty, because many of the Feats and class features surrounding Melee...
