Rant -- GM Control, Taking it Too Far?

My contention was that the player should be able to make up a backstory that fits what has been laid out for the campaign. If it seems like it makes sense with the campaign, but the DM refuses it, the DM should give reasons and a consensus should be reached. If the DM refuses and then TELLS a...

Rant -- GM Control, Taking it Too Far?

If he doesn't like your backstory, ask him for clarification. If he gives you one, refuse. If you want to name yourself something silly, do it. If he demands that you do things his way or else, take the else and leave. You're right. If he's ruining your fun, he's doing something wrong.

    Preview: The Sorcerer

The Daily that does 6d6 and the ability to add your secondary stat to damage definitely screamed Striker to me. I love the idea of a Dragonborn Sorceror of Dragon Magic actually getting right next to the battle and just decimating droves of enemies with the sheer quantity of damage he'll be able...

    Accidental Daily Power Overuse Consequences

The easiest thing, other than just ignoring it, would be to allow everyone else to use a Daily power an extra time that day. Everyone has the same benefit and nobody is punished for an honest mistake. Even this can be turned into a plot hook. What was it that allowed people to do something that...

Applying a Template to a PC

Don't. They aren't at all meant for PCs. PCs and NPCs are not meant to work the same way. Balance and stuff. The ideas might be possible through the use of feats, though. Check out the Dhampyr as an example of a way to create unique things like that through feats.

Mixing races with feats to create a new race

Let me set up this idea. I'm going to be involved in an occasional Wraith Recon game. I was told to make a weird character, the weirder the better, because the group will be about scaring the hell out of whoever they're up against. My mind immediately clicked to a Windwalker Genasi Dhampyr...

    Playing Dhampyr

I plan to make a Windwalker Genasi Dhampyr. The Windwalker is just for the mechanical aspect because it fit my flavor. The Genasi are beings of the elements, create by the Elemental Chaos. Well, there are other planar things. Someone tapped into the power of the Shadowfell and created a...

    D&D 4E 4E Monk Problem Solved

If that Monk with a Sutra also had a Kama... Just create magical handwraps that use Spiked Gauntlets as the base stats. Done.

    Legacy of Acererak

Keep in mind that the DM needs to OK backgrounds and stuff for everyone, which means that he's knowingly increasing the power. It's not power creep if it's an optional thing.

    Warden?

Why? When I play one, I'm definitely going sword and board. I'll do it as a Defender with a secondary Controller aspect. That's going to mean maxing the AC and forgetting about being a damage machine. Maybe I need to look it over again, but what's the benefit of using a reach weapon?

can Blinding Barrage blind a swarm?

I absolutely agree with Saeviomagy. This edition is pretty well balanced along a few lines. By sitting down to play it, people are agreeing to a basic premise about the edition that we're all familiar with. While there is no "true way" to play the game, I still don't agree with the idea certain...

can Blinding Barrage blind a swarm?

Which is exactly as it should be. The second you say, "Well, this doesn't make sense, so you can't do it." you have to be willing to do that for EVERYTHING in the game or you're being a douche. "I hit the ghost." "Nope. It's a ghost. You have a sword. That's not possible." "But, this rule..."...

Open Grave Excerpts: Kas the Betrayer

I like most of the art of this edition. I've looked at some of the art of previous editions. It looks tacky to me. Especially the stuff from 1st edition.

    Creature Incarnation Articles

Weaker elementals? I think that it would be nice to include stuff like that in the low heroic tiers so that it can eventually turn into a major thing. For the moment, Storm Elementals would probably be the way to go, mainly because they've put out a Primordial.

    Wraith recon

It's almost entirely setting. The only mechanical changes include a super-list of items that Wraith Recon members get, plus the options for requisitioning new items. The biggest effect it had on me was the sudden realization that covert-ops was something awesome that I had never thought of...

    Warden?

I want to. Also, it's not a playtest version. It's the actual first couple of levels. Only the Barbarian and Artificer are playtests.

Wraith Recon - anyone have it?

I've played it and have a few friends with the book. It's decent. The best part to me was that it finally presented the Special Forcs idea in a new way. I never thought to do that. The campaign world looks decent. They give you way too much crap, but that's easy enough to fix. The Spellcom can...

Does Healing Word require a Healing Surge? Forked Thread: Ranger beasts

To me, the "and" and "additional" would link the 1d6 to the Healing Surge.

    Fun with Succubus's

She could always perform a ritual that would link her mind with the wife's. As long as they're connected, she can interact normally. That would give her a reason keep the wife alive. It could even be an experiment to see if that ritual works perfectly. You then have more subplots for the future...
