D&D 5E (2014) Large Creatures - How much better is a bigger size for a playable race?

Well, keep in mind that in 2E most weapons did more damage against large creatures. A longsword, for example, did 1d8 vs Medium or smaller and 1d12 vs. large. A two-handed sword did 1d10 vs. Medium or smaller and 3d6 vs. large creatures. Taking 1.5 (or more) times the damage of your normal-sized...

    D&D 5E (2014) Selling a spellbook

I don't understand why the players think an acquired spellbook has a debt-level at all. They can still sell it after the Wizard has copied whatever spells he needs out of it. The value of the spellbook doesn't decrease simply because the wizard can get some use out of it before they sell it.

D&D 5E (2014) Which Pathfinder APs have been converted to 5e?

Yeah. I had them get in a fight with stone giants and cave bears on their way back to Sandpoint from Jorgenfist so we could try out the new rules against monsters they had just fought in PF to get a feel for what's different. They stomped them pretty easily. Freezemaw scared the crap out of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Perform Skill: What's it good for?

Performing is singing, acting, orating, dancing, etc. Musical Instrument proficiency is playing that instrument. While both situations would qualify as a "performance" in common language, Performance the skill has nothing to do with the latter. While I agree some of the skills/tools are little...

D&D 5E (2014) Which Pathfinder APs have been converted to 5e?

I'm in the same boat as bouncyhead. I'm running Rise of the Runelords in 5E, but we converted from PF at the start of Chapter 5 and I've just been kind of converting as I go. I've also got 6 players with 30 point-buy, Hero Points and an extra feat, so I'm changing up enemy numbers and power...

Unearthed Arcana Light, Dark, Underdark - November's Unearthed Arcana

The difference is you can use those 3 Sorcery points to cast any 2nd level (or 1st, for that matter) spell you know, whereas you're spending 2 points to specifically cast Darkness. You're basically getting a discount because it only works for one specific spell. As TwoSix points out, if it...

D&D 5E (2014) DM's: what do you do with players who miss time?

We generally have a missing player designate another player to run their character. If I'm using XP (current Pathfinder AP converted to 5E I'm running I'm using milestone leveling, so the whole party levels up at certain story beats) they get full XP. We have a Google drive we use for campaign...

D&D 5E (2014) DM's: what do you do with players who want to switch characters?

I let players switch characters without penalty (though they have to work with me to iron out the story details of their original character's exit and their new character's introduction) though the magic items belong to the leaving character, they don't switch over. The new character arrives...

    D&D 5E (2014) My shield is invisible

Well, the Shield spell specifically says it is triggered "when you are hit by and attack or magic missile". So deciding after you are hit is part of the spell. The question is whether the DM wants to allow the PC to know whether or not the Shield would actually negate the attack before they...

D&D 5E (2014) DMs, how are you managing the Lucky feat?

We're playing Roll20 and I do all the rolls in the open, so it's impossible to not know the result of a roll, but I have no problems with my player with the Lucky feat saying "I'm spending a Luck point to re-roll that" after any roll he makes, or their opponent makes against him. The DM did...

Unearthed Arcana Light, Dark, Underdark - November's Unearthed Arcana

Nice. My party failed to kill her the first time and she fled. They fought her twice more alongside other enemies before they finally brought her down. The players used to joke that she was the leader of the gang of disgruntled villains they had allowed to escape (which was several) and that one...

Unearthed Arcana Light, Dark, Underdark - November's Unearthed Arcana

Yup. I had a lot of fun as DM playing up Orik's "hard luck by way of his own foolish choices" nature and ended up bringing him back a few times in the course of the campaign. At this point the adventure has moved beyond where another appearance would be feasible (outside of one of our PCs dying...

Unearthed Arcana Light, Dark, Underdark - November's Unearthed Arcana

Orik Vancaskerkin? If so I'm running the same AP currently and one of my players has already said he wants to play Orik if his character dies. In a different game I'm playing in the Beast Master ranger has gotten a lot of utility out of his wolf companion between using its Scent ability and...

Unearthed Arcana Light, Dark, Underdark - November's Unearthed Arcana

I think CQS is way too much (I'm in agreement with others that removing the +1 to hit is probably the easiest way to balance it.) I don't have any issues with Tunnel Fighter. The PC is giving up their Bonus Action in anticipation of getting additional AoOs. Considering the number of situations...

    D&D 5E (2014) Invisibility and Perception

(Provided your opponent can't see invisible creatures) you don't provoke OAs, anyone that tries to attack you has disadvantage, any spell that requires the caster to see the target doesn't function, and you have advantage on all attack rolls. Seems pretty nice to me.

    D&D 5E (2014) ritual casting overpowered?

I personally haven't encountered any problem with it in my games. However, one option, other than banning it, would be to use the Pathfinder version and not allow the rope to be brought into the Extra Dimensional Space. It's still safer than resting in the open, but it's not a fool-proof hiding...

    D&D 5E (2014) Invisibility and Perception

The difference between someone who is Invisible and someone who is Invisible and Hiding is the latter is making an effort to be stealthy, whereas the former is simply unseen while engaging in normal behavior. The rules seem to assume you can pinpoint the location of (though still have...

    D&D 5E (2014) Eliminating skill & feat taxes

You can climb without tools. Whether or not that's advisable is another story. But by the rules you can attempt to climb trees, walls, cliffs, etc with your bare hands. Specialized tools help (and reduce your chance of dying if you fall off) but aren't required. As for Medicine, while it's easy...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tomb Raiders : building an encounter

I'd allow the Mummy Lord to be immune to Insect Plague simply because the spell seems appropriately thematic. If the party can focus-fire on the ML, especially with actual fire attacks, he's going to drop in short order anyway.

    D&D 5E (2014) Eliminating skill & feat taxes

My understanding is Performance and Proficiency: Instrument are unrelated. Performance is singing, dancing, oration, etc. It doesn't cover instruments, because they are considered a tool and thus have their own proficiency. 5E takes great pains to separate Skills (things your character can do)...
