    D&D 5E (2014) Attacking a Creature Engulfing A PC (or in a Grapple, I suppose)

Losing a leg can be pretty deadly between the shock and the blood loss. :) I would say it isn't unreasonable to allow the PC being enveloped to take damage and/or be hit instead. I would say if the PC's AC is lower than the enveloping creature, then an attack that hits their AC but not the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Critical Hit Question

Well, I've never gone for the crazy "You chop your own leg off/accidentally stab your friend/etc) overly punishing fumbles. I think there's a difference between adding a little flavor and chaos to combat and being unnecessarily punitive to people unfortunate enough to roll a 1. The way I'd...

    D&D 5E (2014) Critical Hit Question

I'm toying with the idea of using Fumbles, but I'd make them only happen when the character in question has Disadvantage on the roll and both dice come up failures, with one of the rolls being a natural 1. That should make them fairly rare and only come up in circumstances where the character is...

    D&D 5E (2014) barkskin

Based on the Dryad in the MM, that seems to be the way that's supposed to work. (She loses her Dex modifier when she has Barkskin up.)

D&D 5E (2014) The Wonkiness of Tool Proficiency

The point of the tool proficiencies is they require something physical in order to use them, though. It makes it clear that you can't, as per the earlier example, pick a lock with your thumb (or just give it a good whack Fonzie-style, though that could be kind of cool.) I'd have no problem, as...

    D&D 5E (2014) Some 5E Rule questions

I like the reaction idea. Attempting to catch themselves actually costs the character something. And it means a monk has a choice of using their reaction to try and catch themselves (and potentially fail) or activate their slow fall. I imagine most wizards will just opt to feather fall (if they...

D&D 5E (2014) Everyone Starts at First Level

One thing the seems kind of silly about the "everyone starts at 1st" thing is the argument that "Well, if they're really low compared to the party, they'll level up really fast!" which seems to defeat the purpose of making them 1st level to begin with. If you've got a 10th level party and a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Can you see when you're Blinded?

Why would you abuse your DMG like that? When we were younger, my players learned to fear my accuracy with a thrown roll of paper towels, though. (Non-harmful, but the impact when applied directly to the forehead is enough to get your attention.)

    D&D 5E (2014) Elves, Wizards, Sorcerers, Charisma

I've always seen Wood Elves are surly and antagonistic (for elves) so I really don't see them getting a Charisma bonus. They're the crazy sneaking through the woods, leaping from tree to tree, shooting bows with deadly accuracy types. Dex and Wisdom are the way to go for them. It's a shame...

    D&D 5E (2014) Elves, Wizards, Sorcerers, Charisma

That's an interesting thought. I'd leave Wood elves with the higher Dexterity bonus, but I could easily see High Elves being +2 Charisma, +1 Dexterity and Gray Elves (to bring them back into the equation from pre-4E) being +2 Int, +1 Dex.

D&D 5E (2014) Issues with the "NPCs" in the MM and HotDQ (SPOILERS!)

I wouldn't say 3E was the only edition to use it for NPCs (monsters, yes). When I DMed 2nd Ed, I was constantly creating enemy NPCs using the PC rules. Never once treated them like I was creating a monster. While I played a bit of BECMI and 1st Ed, I never DMed them, so I can't speak for those...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's a wizard to do?

Considering how useful feats are, I wouldn't say "Anyone can get it with a feat" makes it less worthwhile. Also, wizards can cast any ritual spell they have in their spellbook at anytime, versus other classes, like clerics, that have to have the spell prepared. That's incredibly useful. They...

D&D 5E (2014) Do monks get enough Ki?

My thoughts would either be the previously suggested "Add Wis Mod to Ki Points" suggestion or borrow a page from Pathfinder and change some of the Monk abilities to "As long as you have at least 1 ki point remaining, you can do X." without them actually costing ki. I don't have the book in front...

D&D 5E (2014) Everyone Starts at First Level

When we originally started playing back in the 2E days we always had new characters start at 1st level, and yeah, it generally meant that player was making another new character within a session or two. I want to say one of the blue DM's splatbooks suggested starting new characters no lower than...

    What feats are "missing"?

Thanks. Yeah, by "nothing" I meant no weapons or shields (or two-handing the longsword) not that your hand has to be empty. But clarity is always better. Bladesong You've trained in the graceful sword-fighting arts favored by elven fighter-mages. You gain +1 to Dexterity or Intelligence. You...

    What feats are "missing"?

Rogues can already get a d8 sneak attack weapon with a rapier, and still have a hand free, so the staff, spear and trident don't really worry me. The difference between 1d8 and 1d10 is 1 point of damage on average, and the only one rogues are proficient in by default is longsword. There might be...

    What feats are "missing"?

Part of my reason for wanting to allow great weapons is selfish, as I had a Spring Attacking Fighter/Rogue in 3rd Ed who used a holy great sword. :P But thinking it over, with the way the great weapon style and Great Weapon Master feats work, it would probably be too much to stack Sneak Attack...

D&D 5E (2014) What if no stat increases; only feats?

I was toying with the same idea myself. I think Feats are a lot more interesting than static boosts, and Point-buy combined with Stat boosts seems to result in every character of a specific class looking identical, followed by the mentioned "rush for 20" in the prime stat. The way I was...

    What feats are "missing"?

Thug You gain +1 to Strength, to a maximum of 20. You may perform a sneak attack with any weapon in which you are proficient, provided you meet the other requirements. Whenever you hit an opponent with a sneak attack or critical hit that deals damage, you may make a Charisma (Intimidation)...

    D&D 5E (2014) Pathguy's 5th Edition Character Generator

I've been using it for awhile, and while it's a little clunky in spots, it works pretty well. I've also run into situations where it doesn't want to accept my skill or language selections and move on (not just with rogues). I haven't figured out what prompts that. That said, you can still go...
