    D&D 5E (2014) Why stop at Level 20?

Bounded Accuracy does indeed let you use lower level creatures against higher level ones; but the downside is that it takes MUCH longer to run a combat that way. I recently had a combat with 4 level 18 characters against a Warlord, Abjurer, Diviner, two Fire Elementals, two Githyanki Knights and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why stop at Level 20?

The 5e MM, for all the complaints made about its lack of high level threats, does manage I think to avoid the MMO issue of high level monsters logically taking over the world but not doing so for 'reasons'. As you note, even Ancient Dragons have reasonable limits on their ability to just take...

D&D 5E (2014) hand use rules of D&D: object interaction, spellcasting focus and components

You've reminded me of another idea on this theme, which I've been ruminating: making Potions not count as Magical Items for this purpose. So you can toss a potion down for 'free' on your turn, the Thief can do that twice, etc. It seems interesting, but I'm not sure on the ramifications.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why stop at Level 20?

It's hard to add that many compelling threats at the upper end without raising questions about the lower. MMOs have this problem in spades; to avoid high level players burning towns to the ground, the guards are all level 100, which rather seems to undermine the concept of the players being...

D&D 5E (2014) hand use rules of D&D: object interaction, spellcasting focus and components

My method is to just quietly ignore the whole hands thing. If the Ranger gets charged, and wants to fight in melee, then she can holster (? is that the word?) her bow, and draw her longsword, and that's fine. If the wizard wants to hold a staff and cast a spell and maybe even still attack with...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you think the monk has too few ki points? And my proposal.

Monks are amazingly good when played well. Strong combination of Rogue and Fighter. I'd be wary of giving them more Ki, since you'll only regret it when they start stun-locking every monster in your combats.

    D&D 5E (2014) Adventures in Middle-Earth - Rhovanion Region Guide

We'll presumably be getting the Mirkwood campaign for AiME soon then?

    D&D 5E (2014) Against the Giants / Yawning Portal in 3D Glory !!

A bit of both, I think. Their wargame - Malifaux - takes place in a city in another plane, with wizards, demons, gremlins, and catholic priests all squabbling over it. It explicitly had a very punk vibe; in crude D&D terms, it happily mixes Steampunk, Planescape, Dark Sun and Ravenloft into the...

D&D 5E (2014) What do you want in a published adventure? / Adventure design best practices?

I'd push back against Lanefan; taking the font size too small is a recipe for disaster. That said, I'm not actually sure how big the font size in the WotC APs is; I'd guess that's a solid size to mimic, if you can work it out. Doubtless it'll turn out to be font size 9, now that I've said that...

D&D 5E (2014) What do you want in a published adventure? / Adventure design best practices?

Happy to help! For your reference, and to help anyone following along, this is what the page in question looks like. On the other topic, I really don't mind the standard 5e model of monster names being Bold for reference to Volo's or the MM; but then I tend to pre-build all of the combats in a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Against the Giants / Yawning Portal in 3D Glory !!

Couple reasons: - the company making it was solely a wargaming one at the time (Wyrd) - only wargamers tend to go in for large scale city terrain, especially in a range of formats and styles matching the aesthetic of the wargame Wyrd makes - it was marketed fairly aggressively at the time at...

D&D 5E (2014) What do you want in a published adventure? / Adventure design best practices?

One of my biggest complaints about running Hoard of the Dragon Queen is that it has loads of fantastical locations, meant presumably to evoke atmosphere, but it cannot be bothered giving me a description of those locations. A lack of boxed text is a lack of descriptions for me to read to the...

Unfortunately they were useless for wargaming, their core market. Your maps look as great as ever!

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Beyond Phase 2 and 3 are open beta!

I've had a look, and created a couple characters. It's not perfect: for example... when you try to add Plate to your fighter, it'll bring up a list of all the magical platemail first, which seems an odd choice in character creation it asks you to assign ASIs before assigning base ability...

    D&D 5E (2014) "Champion" equivalent Magic User?

That's a clever thought, but the monk flavour is too strong to hide what it is, in my experience. You'll never feel like a caster, only a monk who can shoot.

    D&D 5E (2014) "Champion" equivalent Magic User?

Warlock is easy enough in play, and the closest you'll get, but you absolutely will need to provide a helping hand to do the character creation in this context. The Warlock's really complex to build, but simple to play. The Sorcerer, in my limited experience, is the opposite.

Fantasy Flight Games Announces Genesys RPG

I'm not a fan of games where, after rolling the dice, you then have to sit and have a discussion about what does it mean. Feels more like therapy than gaming! Much prefer to just have a simple dice mechanic that lets the DM get on with things. My main curiosity is whether they'll try to use this...

    D&D 5E (2014) Adventures in Middle-Earth - Rhovanion Region Guide

Interesting that this will be up for preorder before their Road Goes Ever On supplement, which is the maps one... this does look a lot more marketable, though. I'm interested to see what's in it, once the contents page is shown. Can we expect more adventures, since I saw the new Bree book comes...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D 5e Trope: The Five Guy Band

Best tanks that I see in my (no multiclassing) games tend to be the Eldritch Knight and Paladin - but both require adroit spell usage - while the Barbarian is the easier route. Monks with high AC and a fondness for dodging are also a nightmare, since they ignore dex effects as well. I've not...

    D&D 5E (2014) Campaign defining magic item

Oh, that's a nice idea. Seeding the lot of them around the place after they find the first one; like a lower power and less epic version of the Rod of Seven Parts. Sent from my iPad using EN World
