D&D 5E (2014) D&D product sales numbers on Amazon, etc.

I'm really hoping for this also. It would certainly cover the monster gap left by Volo's, since you could get a solid 40ish monsters out of Fiends, Rilmani, and whatnot, could include some Planar PC races and subclasses - Horizon Walker for example, Bariar, Rogue Modrons - and still have enough...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

When Orcs turn away from their gods, and start worshipping the Demon Lords of the Abyss, Baphomet is likely to show favour by bestowing the Taranukk upon the tribe. This is a... mixed blessing, especially given how domineering the Tanarukk is. The image in the book is of a Tanarukk standing...

    D&D 5E (2014) Improving the Spear

Was that in the context of one-on-one sparring, or in a mass combat situation? I suspect very much that the sword is better when fighting an opponent solo, which is how D&D combat generally goes; the spear (and its superior cousin, the pike) are great for formations of infantry, since they allow...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

Giant Bats don't get flyby sadly, so they don't let the Red Fangs auto-disengage. They're basically horses with a fly speed, and not very exciting with it, so there doesn't seem a lot to say about them. Sent from my iPhone using EN World mobile app

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

The last of the ‘normal’ Orcs, the Red Fang of Shargaas is the rogue of the race. The champions among the outcast followers of Shargaas, they are surprisingly potent assassin-style enemies, and have some really cool abilities to offer. The Red Fang gets a really awesome image in the book -...

D&D 5E (2014) half orc crit with greatsword or maul 1d6 or 2d6 extra?

It tends to make me want a Great-Axe, not a Greatsword, since 3d12 is better than 5d6, at least in this player's mind! I felt that was a nice, subtle nudge towards using an axe as a HalfOrc, which I liked.

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

Today we are looking at the Hand of Yurtrus and Nurtured One of Yurtrus together, because I’d like to finish this series before a new edition arrives… The art in the book for the Nurtured One is fun, and pretty disgusting, but surprisingly standard-feeling for an image of a suicide bomber...

D&D 5E (2014) To Screen or not to Screen

I've noticed that many modern screens are much lower than the ones from the 90s, such as my Planescape one. This is presumably why?

[UPDATED - With Cubicle 7] Games Workshop Concluding Deal For Licensing Rights To Warhammer Fantasy

I wonder if the licence even includes Age of Sigmar; I could see that being a separate property. To be honest, you could do Age of Sigmar pretty easily in 5e, as its assumptions on magic and power are much closer to D&D high fantasy than they are to the Old World setting's grim and grit.

    D&D 5E (2014) LMoP - Goblin Ambush - Stealth and Surprise

I'm sorry, but someone who has not even read the PHB and decides to be a rules lawyer is someone that you should keep an eye on. The main benefit of a rules lawyer in the group is that you can ask them what the rules are; one that doesn't know the rules is just bossy.

D&D 5E (2014) When Fiends Attack: Are Balors, Pit Fiends and Ultraloths too weak?

This is effectively it for Strahd - I tried having a 'Vampire Wedding' event that the players got invited to, and he couldn't stay alive long enough to flee on his second action. Weak. I describe it here. Back on topic: I see that, generally speaking, people are happy to have monsters be...

D&D 5E (2014) To Screen or not to Screen

I generally always use a screen. My notes are on an iPad - I store them on a tiddlywiki, along with copy/pastes from relevant PDFs - so it is not the secrecy for notes thing. I do like the option for keeping rolls secret: sometimes I roll out in the open, sometimes behind, sometimes I'll lift...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

The mama bear of the Orcs, the Claw of Luthic is a really interesting statblock, and reminds me a lot of how Druids are portrayed in videogames. In the above image, the female at the top is Luthic, while the male at the bottom is Bahgtru, apparently. The image in Volo’s is actually really...

D&D 5E (2014) When Fiends Attack: Are Balors, Pit Fiends and Ultraloths too weak?

Well, a great many DMs - myself included - find that he dies in a round or two of open fighting, so he clearly can't be that strong. There just isn't time to make use of those abilities if he - as happened in my game - only gets a single action before dying. This was while standing in a large...

D&D 5E (2014) When Fiends Attack: Are Balors, Pit Fiends and Ultraloths too weak?

I'm afraid that you seem to have answered a different question than the one I posed. I don't care about whether you think your group can fight Balors at any given level. I'm interested to know whether you feel that Balors (and whatnot) should be only high level, or whether being killable from...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

One note - Tyr in D&D is based on the Forgotten Realms god of Justice and Chopping yer hand off to Smite Evil, not the Norse one. Who he was originally. So him being on Celestia isn't that surprising. You're right about Hel, I'd forgotten her; but then again, she gathers all of the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

The Acheron thing is really notable, but on reading Planescape stuff you see loads of examples where creatures go to the 'wrong' afterlife for their alignment, due to racial pantheons and the like. Most (all?) Drow go to the Abyss, regardless of their personal alignment, thanks to Lloth...

D&D 5E (2014) When Fiends Attack: Are Balors, Pit Fiends and Ultraloths too weak?

Well, my question is less 'is the Balor killable by level 9 characters', since that particular battle has been waged on here plenty of times, and more 'is it a problem if it can be killed by level 9 characters'. Assume for the moment that it is possible for level 9 characters to do that - what...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

Well, as you say, the two used together are going to be incredible. I just think that a 'Warchief' who is the same CR as a lieutenant statline and whose leadership ability is a once/day ability is rather underwhelming, in comparison. I'd like a CR 6 or 7 version of the Warchief now, something...
