    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

You said that the Blade can use the Ilneval's Command power up to twice - unless you mean how long the combat is likely to last, I'm not seeing a restriction. Also, it has quadruple the range of the Warchief ability, 30ft vs 120ft.

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

The Orc Blade of Ilneval is a leader style melee combatant, and he duplicates the role and CR rating for the Orc Warchief so closely that we can regard him as essentially a variant entry for that role. The Blade of Ilneval is described as a leader of Orcs, who has gained the ability to...

D&D 5E (2014) When Fiends Attack: Are Balors, Pit Fiends and Ultraloths too weak?

Friends, Roleplayers, Dungeon Masters, I was reading the very interesting thread about Balor vs Pit Fiend, and though I couldn't contribute to the intense DPR calculations being made, I found the a minor point in discussion worth spinning out into its own topic. In short, the calculations...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

I found this a really interesting point. You're totally right - the abilities of the two races are widely divergent of each other, even more so than Human (+1 to everything, free skills) and Half-Elf (two +1s, free skills, other stuff). However, I suspect that when it comes to Half Orc and Orc...

LOST CITADEL 5E RPG Coming From Green Ronin

Also the Hyperlink thing, for sci-fi. I was being a bit hyperbolic - I know that this is nothing compared to 3e - but it still seems really notable that we are not seeing any effort to make 'The Giant Book of Spells' or whatever.

LOST CITADEL 5E RPG Coming From Green Ronin

Interesting to see that the OGL-explosion this time around appears much more focused on providing new settings than on providing new crunch. Presumably the DMsGuild has covered the market for crunch expansion? Or maybe it is just that the industry learned from last time, and is keen to do...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

Today I’m going to vary the format a little, and talk about the Orc Society that is outlined by Volo’s Guide; this will take enough time that we won’t discuss any of the individual Orc profiles in huge detail, but will instead look at how they are meant to work together, and what they tell us...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

I was more envisaging a mass battle situation, where morale is the key element, and one that Goblins are famously deficient in. Hobos seem much more possessed of brass balls and a steel backbone, so would be the superior soldiers in such a context, whereas Goblins are indeed potent skirmishers.

A question about the hunting Lodge in HoTDQ

The former, I would say. However, there is generally thought to not be enough magical items in the book, so you could be justified in quietly making it a set of full plate with minor Elven-themed magical properties. Letting you hide with no penalty while in forests, for example?

Good lord, how did I manage to overlook that feature? Clearly the Nilbog charmed me...

D&D 5E (2014) Will WotC produce a Plane Shift: Kaladesh document?

Goodness me, that Amonkhet book looks gorgeous. I'm a big fan of Egyptian-style stuff - I play Tomb Kings in Age of Sigmar - so I'm tempted by whatever that is.

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

Goblins have numbers. The side with the most soldiers is likely to win. They may be crap soldiers, but if they're at the back of the army and help to intimidate the other side through sheer numbers, that won't matter. Plus, the downsides - Nilbogs, Bargheists - are pretty minor, in the grand...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

Goblins are one of my favourite low-level monsters. I'm just a big fan of the mixture of madcap humour and desperate savagery that they provide. I also play Orks in Warhammer 40,000, so I've got a secret desire for the greenskins to beat my players! Well, we're about to hit a rich seam of...

D&D 5E (2014) Warlocks and Hex and the "daily morning short rest"

A lot of these problems arise because the game combines mechanical concerns (recharging powers via rests) with narrative descriptions (waiting an hour, sleeping overnight). That causes issues, since the narrative concerns and the mechanical concerns do not always coincide nicely, as demonstrated...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

I meant to mention that, but forgot. Oops! I really liked the terrain in that area, and it was one of the few areas where I finished the quests just when I was getting bored of the area anyway. Riding up that axe was probably the highlight of the game for me. I wonder how you could stat up...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

The last of the Illithids from Volo's, the Neothelid is radically different from its kin in size and game function. A big solitary hunter, the Neothelid is a very potent beast indeed. The Neothelid art in the book is a solid effort, which really focuses the eye on the mouth. It basically...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

I guess that not everyone likes Fiends, Yuan-Ti, or whatever, and so another option isn't necessarily a bad thing. They might also justify their own inclusion on purely name recognition grounds. I mean, how many 'good and interesting D&D monsters' can there be left? But that doesn't make them...

    D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Storm King's Thunder"

There's a really bad one in Princes of the Apocalypse.

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

Some good ideas there. I think that the Morkoth has a lot of really interesting plot hooks, mostly thanks to its wee island. I'm looking forward to using one - they seem like great recurring NPCs, bouncing from campaign to campaign, world to world. --------- I’ll be honest with you, dear...
