    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

The Morkoth is one of those monsters that the game likes to jump dump in your lap, and leave you to try and decide what to do with it. There is some really interesting elements here, but it certainly isn’t what you might expect to see. The art for the Morkoth in Volo’s is probably the worst...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

I'm quite a fan of vague origins for some races, if only to keep the DM's options open. It does lead to some weird discussions though - I had a player define Beholderkin as 'native to another plane' for the purposes of Banishment, whereas I felt that the Far Realm didn't count for that purpose...

Unearthed Arcana Latest Unearthed Arcana Introduces Rogue & Ranger Archetypes

Well, I'd say that your real problem there is insisting that the player should get to do more damage for having a larger weapon. I'd simply deny that element, and say that the player gets to follow the normal damage rules until and unless explicitly allowed by something that they did. In other...

D&D 5E (2014) Forgotten Realms is being BETRAYED by Wizards

I also frequent - not as much these days - wargaming forums. And believe me when I say that this place has nothing on the negativity that can be shown towards Games Workshop on a relevant forum thread. One observation that was made commonly in such places is that, every once in a while, the guys...

Unearthed Arcana Latest Unearthed Arcana Introduces Rogue & Ranger Archetypes

@OB1 can you provide a rules reference to back up your central assumption that there is such a thing as a 'Large Greatsword'? As my understanding of the rules goes - often demonstrated to be shaky! - there is no such thing; simply that many creatures of Large or greater size also happen to use...

Unearthed Arcana Latest Unearthed Arcana Introduces Rogue & Ranger Archetypes

Well, because if they do that, then when they pick up the larger-than-normal Greatsword it simply does 2d6+d4 damage, as the spell states. In other words, there is already a method for 'what happens if I try to use a huge weapon' right in the spell text.

D&D 5E (2014) Forgotten Realms is being BETRAYED by Wizards

As @ProgBard notes, I did try to aim at content, hence why I kept it clean of names. I didn't want to cross the line and make a personal attack. In defense of this post, there has been an incredible amount of hyperbolic nonsense being posted on the forum of late. I mean, satire only works when...

Unearthed Arcana Latest Unearthed Arcana Introduces Rogue & Ranger Archetypes

Having rules text that lets you avoid arguments with players about weapons and whatnot is indeed a Good Thing. It's very easy for players to get excited about 4d6 greatswords or whatnot, and get quite annoyed and aggrieved when they are forbidden it; just like it is very easy for a DM to be...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

My first thought would be to make the Sun into a person, or a being of some kind. I'm inspired by this tweet of Mearls, where he mentioned the Stars being entities, and maybe evil ones. So if the Sun is a person - a God, or a giant face, or whatever - then that opens up some interesting ideas...

    Well, that's disgusting.

D&D 5E (2014) Warlocks and Hex and the "daily morning short rest"

I've not had the problem, but a lot of this sort of thing - bag of rats, Barbarians punching themselves all day, etc - you just need to say to the player, "No, that is silly. Please stop trying to abuse things in a weird way that breaks immersion just for minuscule DPR gain." Just my gut feeling.

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

I've heard of the 'extinguishing the sun' thing before. It seems gloriously bonkers, and I'd almost like to approach it from the other side - with the players emerging from the Underdark (perhaps they went down as their first adventure) to discover that the surface world has fallen into anarchy...

    D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Storm King's Thunder"

I've run Lyn Armaal for a group of level 15 characters. They found it actually a serious threat, after I added a couple Giants to the gate and gave Sansuri six Invisible Stalker allies. After fighting their way through the gate, the griffons and elements on the bridge, and the Giants in the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

Thanks for bringing those up, @Leatherhead - I'm not really touching on the Chapter One stuff as much, so it's good to have it mentioned here. -------------------------------- Almost the last of the Mind Flayer-themed entries, the Mind Witness is a pretty strange customer. Created by a fusion...

D&D 5E (2014) Forgotten Realms is being BETRAYED by Wizards

It is well known that Wizards are failing D&D. No copies are being sold of any book, and the reason is precisely because they are not correctly addressing the concerns of true fans about the canon of the Forgotten Realms. This is very obvious. For example, Wizards - headed by the Actual Human...

    D&D 5E (2014) Green Dragon Lair

There is a Green Dragon lair in Rise of Tiamat. It's short, like all the dungeons in that module, but does have an interesting twist on the cave theme, as it is located behind a waterfall in a forest, and the only two ways into the Dragon's sleeping chamber (as opposed to outer chambers) is...

D&D 5E (2014) Tales from the Yawning Portal: A better title would be "Nezram's tales of adventure".

There is a starport inside Undermountain - the subject of a whole module from 2e. http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/17579/Undermountain-Stardock-2e?it=1

New Digital Games Studio announced by the president of Wizards of the Coast

Every once in a while, I sadly browse the iOS store looking for something D&Desque. I know about Baldur's Gate and whatnot, but something new and distinctively D&D would be nice.
