D&D 5E (2014) What else to I need to consider for a 5e realism hard mode?

When I ran WFRP 2e back in the day, I remember thinking that it was not all that different from D&D in terms of how the turns worked, but with the classes totally changed into the (sometimes unconvincing) Careers mechanic. I've not run it for nearly a decade, but I wonder how it'd feel now...

Tomb of Annihilation Is Here - What Do You Think?

Ah, well, that's fine then. Carry on! You going to try and swing Christmas copies of this and Xanathar's? That'd be fun

Tomb of Annihilation Is Here - What Do You Think?

Er... the book expressly describes how Szass Tam has sent a party of his own to investigate and shut down or claim the Soulmonger. It's one of the first things that the book talks about, actually! It matters since the players are likely to meet them, I think, but I've not gotten past the first...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Beyond - Adventures

Yeah, that's what I found about D&D maps - you can get them printed out professionally, but it'll cost you. At $25, you start to wonder how much the rest of the book is worth to you! It's worth noting that you can print out poster maps at home - what you need to do is use Adobe Acrobat...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Beyond - Adventures

I picked up the DDB version of Storm King's Thunder this week, in large part because its chapter on the North is a very useful resource to have on my computer when doing game prep (I also got Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide for the same reason). I had a look at the adventure itself, and also had...

D&D 5E (2014) Send a party to get an item/loot, how to keep them to their contract?

Have the reward offered by the NPC be more valuable to the party than the item in question, is the logical answer to me. As @CapnZapp mentions, having the item be relatively worthless to the party but valuable to the NPC is one way to tip it; having the reward be extraordinary is another. You...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dinosaur Racing Rules

I'd ask for Athletics checks, myself. After all, he's still got to exert himself to outpace the other participants, and he won't have the fear of a lash goading him on.

UA: New Race Options, Eladrin and Gith

You know, I don't think I've ever met someone so fixated on Elven dexterity. And I say that as someone who owns a Warhammer Elves army!

    D&D 5E (2014) Why D&D Can't Have a Good Video Game

That's the problem with reading a forum - you start to get bored with how often people repeat themselves :/

D&D 5E (2014) [Tomb of Annihilation] Less absolute Curse?

Follow that chain of logic, and you'd soon have no need for adventurers at all. Why does Helm allow evil doers to succeed in their crimes? Why does Selune allow evil lycantropes to exist when she could presumably just moonbeam them all? Well, because then there's no plot.

D&D 5E (2014) [SPOILERS] Enhancing Tomb of Annihilation

In my experience, most of these concerns will be answered by the players with one word: "Prestidigitation."

UA: New Race Options, Eladrin and Gith

I really like the Eladrin concept and fluff, but I agree with others who feel that it's overpowered. It's barely less powerful than many full races - just give it +2 Dex and you'd be done, nevermind the rest of the Elf abilities. It's especially problematic when the Elf subraces already have...

Tomb of Annihilation Is Here - What Do You Think?

They're not that close, but Games Workshop Skinks can be had for really cheap and they're small reptilian people. It's probably worth a shot just for the fact that you'll be able to get a dozen dirt cheap.

D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation up on dndbeyond!

They're probably trying to keep Artus Cimber alive, and by forbidding the magic items the players will have no desire to murder him for them.

D&D 5E (2014) [Tomb of Annihilation] Less absolute Curse?

My real concern would be that, in my experience, only rarely are characters raised from the dead. They either never go to 0 for more than one round, or they die and want to make a new character anyway. So I would be tempted to dick about with the Death Saving Throws stuff, instead. Maybe make...

Tomb of Annihilation Is Here - What Do You Think?

Well, if you make extensive use of a public outreach program to help your game grow, why wouldn't that feature into your planning?

Thanks for the replies. Seems like a good option then.

Tomb of Annihilation Is Here - What Do You Think?

I've come to think the factions could be very nicely done with backgrounds, one for each. Their benefits really don't need to as strong as they were in 2e. Otherwise I think and hope you are right here - Sigil is an excellent candidate for an AP.

Tomb of Annihilation Is Here - What Do You Think?

For those that have it, how does this adventure and its locations work as a sidequest source? I've got a homebrew campaign on the Sword Coast, and would be perfectly happy to ship my players (or, at least, their characters) down to Chult for a couple months to do a jungle themed exploration...

D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation up on dndbeyond!

Some stuff I noticed: Both Artus Cimber and the Ring of Winter are in, so congratulations to those who put that thread together. Grungs, Dinosaurs, Yuan-Ti, Kobolds, Fire Newts, and Vegepygmys are copied from Volo's; I don't own that on dndbeyond, so I'm not sure how the website handles you...
