    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

I think that Conjure Elemental thus will be a pre-cast. In other words, it is a reason to justify having the Korred hang around with some elemental mates. There is certainly a lot of story potential with the hair turning into different things, and the Korred still being able to control it...

New Digital Games Studio announced by the president of Wizards of the Coast

I think that one thing I'd love for D&D would be an app that is expressly designed to be a companion to the APs. So you could buy a thing on it to activate, say, Storm King's Thunder, and it will not only have all the combats pre-built as combat encounters with initiative tracking and whatnot...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

We once again meet one of the Fey, as the Korred hooves it into view, his oddly powerful hair swishing around him. I kind of love these guys, but dang they are weird. The image in Volo’s is very subdued in its palette, which is the most striking thing about it. I like the enigmatic, alien...

D&D 5E (2014) Points of Light setting and current cross-over strategy: Round peg in the square hole.

I imagine that if they had wanted to, they could have done reasonably similar story points in the PoL/Nerath setting. After all, Tyranny of Dragons is really specific to Faerun, but if you were starting from scratch in Nerath, you presumably wouldn't frame it that way! That doesn't get away...

D&D 5E (2014) Points of Light setting and current cross-over strategy: Round peg in the square hole.

Thank you for sharing this link, it's a great find. I'm not about to run 4e any time soon, but it is certainly interesting to be able to browse a professionally made setting that incorporates many elements from prior D&D lore, and adds some new ones that have continued into 5e.

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

No worries, glad that you're enjoying them! I like the usable items idea, and it could definitely be used for laughs or pathos, depending on how you depict the Sorcerer in relation to its draconic overlord. The Quickened spell is definitely way more interesting than Subtle spell, but would...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Good Players Should Not Play Champions

This is what I did as well. I ended up with a Half Orc Champion who was formerly part of the Waterdhavian Watch, and who was sufficiently well rounded to interact with all the pillars of the game, being trained in Insight, Perception, Survival, Intimidation and Persuasion. It means that, at...

    D&D 5E (2014) Elder Brain Armor--Volo's Guide gap

I'd be inclined to have the situation where the Elder Brain's tank does indeed have impenetrable glass - so that archers cannot shoot it, for example - but that the impenetrable glass can be bypassed or destroyed. I mean, the moment you have a metal framework - something black and dripping with...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

The last of the Kobold entries, the Kobold Scale Sorcerer is another interesting entry, despite my slight apathy towards the race as a whole. The Scale Sorceror gets a really odd image. At first glance, you’d think that it was a type of Winged Kobold, but upon a closer look the wings are...

    D&D 5E (2014) Would this fix Champion?

I actually think that the Sorcerer is more complicated than the Wizard in play. You've got two separate spellcasting resources to track, not one: spell slots and sorcery points. The best option, I think, is to give them a lot of help to build a Warlock, which then plays beautifully simply in...

    D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Storm King's Thunder"

Interesting. What's the name of the Goodman effort? I always find myself torn with Dragons - on the one hand, the common depictions of them is as totally solitary creatures: Smaug on his hoard in his empty mountain. However, in D&D terms you absolutely do not want to have a Dragon by itself, and...

D&D 5E (2014) Slightly confused about Curse of Strahd

My party met Strahd in the chapel. It went fairly anti-climatically. I decided not to beef him up, in part because the party paladin wasn't all that tactical with his choices. The story of the campaign up to that point meant that Strahd had invited them to his wedding to Ireena, who he had...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

There is certainly scope to change the Inventor's list up, just like the variant Hag Coven spell lists in chapter one. In particular, the Inventor makes a great template for a more powerful version, like a mad Dwarven Tinkerer that unleashes all kinds of crazy things on the players using...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

Oddly for a race with low Intelligence, the Kobolds have a theme of being clever at making traps and inventions. The Kobold Inventor is a weaponised version of this tendency, being a guy who tosses random crap into the combat throughout. He’s a lot of fun, and I think will be a popular guy for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Storm King's Thunder"

Man, I love Claugilyamatar. She's such an interesting character - the grumpy and territorial Dragon who is known as Old Gnawbones, but who also pines for the sights to be seen in Waterdeep and Silverymoon, and dreams of joining those cities as their open and revered ruler. There is a stellar...

D&D 5E (2014) Classic Products from the Last 17 Years

Biggest problem with it was the classes - they felt odd and didn't justify their existence, being difficult to use to describe literary characters that you might want to play. I've heard that D20 modern cracked the classes thing for modern day games, but I've not read that one. Perhaps a...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Good Players do not play Player Characters

It is a well known fact that many players insist on playing the game in a badwrongfun manner. The primary way in which they do this is by providing less than 99% of the expected maximal DPR for their choice. In addition, they tend to insist on playing suboptimal choices, here defined as 'things...

    D&D 5E (2014) Would this fix Champion?

I can't agree more with this. I loved playing the Champion in a one-shot, it is the kind of class that I really enjoy - simple, characterful, allows me to concentrate on what is happening with the rest of the combat. Is it boring? Well, to some - but not to others. I think that high level...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

The Kobolds are a bit of a weird race to me - the game seems to alternate wildly between treating them as comedy fodder and wanting you to respect them as dangerous low-level foes. Volo’s gives some space in chapter one to them, which focuses on explaining how their society functions, and how...
