Frequent short sessions vs infrequent long sessions

Thanks! Yeah, I'm a bit baffled by it, and my wife said something like, "Well you can't expect to game every week, that's not very realistic." but she goes over to her parents house every week (but that's OK, see, because it's NOT gaming!). *sigh* The guys tend to be pretty punctual, it's...

Frequent short sessions vs infrequent long sessions

I'm stepping into this situation right now. My friends all live in the Kansas City Metro and I'm about 40 minutes away from any of their houses, so we really haven't been gaming much or they haven't been gaming with me. I set up a monthly game that I'll be DMing for which will last about four...

D&D 5E (2014) How to bring back Dungeon Magazine and Dragon Magazine - Crate Edition

Agreed. I'd prefer to not have more stuff, most of which is junk, cluttering up my house. Maybe if they paid me for it! :) All that being said, I'd subscribe in an instant to a true Dungeon/Dragon magazine that is solely about 5th Edition D&D (with a little brand cross-pollination) in digital...

    Meet a Professional Game Master

That's a very good point. I was hired by Games Workshop, to run their store in Kansas City, right out of college and the experience has soured my opinion of the company and destroyed my childhood love of the Warhammer brands forever.

    Weekend vs. Weekday

I prefer to play on weekends, but we play once a month and the scheduling has to be super flexible because we have a nurse with a 9-month old boy and wife to balance, a security guard at a hotel (so odd shifts), and a social worker (unpredictable hours sometimes + weekend backup once every few...

D&D 5E (2014) Moving diagonally between enemies on a grid

I'd allow the move, but there would definitely be some attacks of opportunity going on, unless the players specifically said that they were actively attempting to block that avenue of movement.

Great post, Celebrim! I definitely think you're correct on the future of the domestic workforce, and you are probably right about the current cost of childcare being due to liability insurance, but it still smarts! Food for thought, most certainly.

    Meet a Professional Game Master

I tend to agree with you. I'd be very surprised to see this work anywhere other than metropolitan areas where there is both a high pool of potential customers and a higher wage median. I COULD see this being, potentially, a great source of extra income for a family where it makes economic...

    D&D 5E (2014) WotC & Novels

I can understand where you're coming from, but your reply would have been better served with the above extemperation than the one-liner you started with as, due to the medium, tends to come across as snarky and contributing little to the conversation. I think the majority of D&D novels were at...

    D&D 5E (2014) WotC & Novels

I thought I had read that somewhere as well. I'm not in a huge hurry, as I still have loads of books to read, but I hope we get more! (By the way, love your World Building Guide, good stuff!) Agreed! I have recently reduced my physically book collection down to one book shelf (we live in a...

    D&D 5E (2014) WotC & Novels

Do you think WotC is completely done with putting out novels for D&D? I find it kind of a shame if they truly stop, as they put out some of my favorite Fantasy novels. I've thought that they might just let a publisher pick up the license, but it could be a bad move as there would be less...

Can you move Echohawk's Collector's Lists off of the wiki, if you plan to keep it off?

New DM Screen Coming In September

Meh. I think half a panel for conditions would have been more than enough IMO. Better than the other two, but still not great. Edit: Then again, I REALLY like the player-side artwork (I have it as my wallpaper on all my devices now!) so I may very well pick it up just for that.

    Suggest monsters for a mega-dungeon

OK, let me give it some thought. I apologize, sometimes my stream of consciousness gets away from me when my imagination takes hold. :)

    Suggest monsters for a mega-dungeon

I think the best way to do it would be to have the very lowest depths of the mega-dungeon to be open to your world's version of the underdark. Allowing this would create a solid foundation for a thriving ecosystem to develop within the mega-dungeon; think myconids, troglodytes, and all the...

How crucial is to have a map?

Do I have maps with me when I am running the game? Yes, of course, but those maps are behind the screen and not for the players to see. The only maps I tend to have out in front of the players, besides a battlemat or their own exploration maps, are world/region maps when and if appropriate.
