(IC) Quickleaf's Rime of the Frostmaiden

The kobold wearing fake wings (the same one whom Lumrolur managed to expel the ghost from) pivots his head to the side to study Jack. He doesn't respond right away at the sight of the silver, though his jaw twitches side-to-side, letting the fairy finish his elaborate request. "Trex knows. But...

D&D General Alternate Initiative Concept: "Y'all figure it out"

Yeh, it definitely takes a spirit of adventure and desire to try new rules ideas. Online when I’ve been doing 5e I’ve just been doing the clustered initiative - But I have tried to avoid getting locked into Foundry/Roll20/FG built in initiative counters. I know a lot of GMs get locked into...

D&D General Alternate Initiative Concept: "Y'all figure it out"

The issue you're identifying is that a randomized turn sequence discourages planning amongst players...because there's no way to know whether Beryl the Barbarian will get to act before or after Sam the Sorcerer's fireball. It's not impossible to plan, it's just much harder due to randomized turn...

D&D General Powering Up and Delayed Actions

Yes, sorry, I was thinking diameter. A 40-foot radius would work. The general idea though is... this sort of thing works easily in a video game where movement is truly at a premium... but in most 5e games movement is not at a premium. That's why I would recommend (and what I do with these sorts...

D&D General Powering Up and Delayed Actions

In order for that kind of thing to work in 5e / modern D&D-alikes, there's certain things that need to happen. Generally, evading the Super Attack needs to cost more than just movement for most PCs (the exception being those who have Bonus Action movement or exceptional speeds). So you're...

D&D General Alternate Stats for Initiative [+]

Note the caveat in my OP ;) as I immediately pointed out that exceptions would be needed to be designed for this reason.

D&D General Alternate Stats for Initiative [+]

Yeah, all initiative systems have some degree of ridiculousness when you get into them, so if we're using one initiative system (how most games handle it) rather than several systems depending on situation (how I'm trying to house rule it), it's sort of a case of which sort of ridiculousness can...

D&D General Alternate Stats for Initiative [+]

Crazy idea: Initiative is counted from lowest current hit points going first, up to highest current hit points going last. Basically initiative as "urgency to act." The caveat would be solo/legendary monsters getting special treatment with some kind of off-normal-turn action capability.

[OOC] Quickleaf's Rime of the Frostmaiden [recruiting 1 player]

I just heard from a player who is interested in joining your party. That would keep you at 6 PCs…I think you could use a tank and/or healer? Would everyone be open to adding one more? @Aethmud @happylace @Neurotic @Steve Gorak @VLAD the Destroyer

D&D 5E (2014) Setting up a Dungeons and Dragons Club at my Local Library

Your involuntary gifts of dice will have ripple effects in the kiddo's lives, for sure. The Sunless Citadel (in TftYP) is a nice one, a bit shorter and more straightforward than LMoP, depending how you run the later. But LMoP is great.

    D&D 5E (2024) Why aren't you using 5e 2024?

Gosh, this poll is so hard to decide... Do I want to appear myopic, hidebound, mean-spirited, or just plain irrational? So many good options to choose from!

D&D 5E (2024) Did you make up your mind about 5.24?

I don't like it. Leaving aside my negative views of the parent corporation, and leaving aside my positive views of Chris Perkins, I was on the "cusp" of 5e fandom to begin with, with tastes leaning more OSR. So they don't really need me as a fan anymore. The game was already plenty complex...

D&D 5E (2024) How do I disarm traps? Does Thieves' Tools do anything?

I always like to lead with "Ok, imagine this is the door. Show me where you're standing while you disarm the trap, Bob." It works especially well when pre-arming the other players with Nerf weapons.
