Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

@Parmandur I learned something that I thought might illuminate our earlier conversation. This is from YouTuber Ginny Di who had an advance copy of the 2024 DMG. I know I know, YouTubers aren’t the most reliable, but she got quite specific about encounter building differences between 2014 and...

D&D 5E (2014) How to Run Combats in a Cavernous Dungeon Without Alerting All NPC's?

Yeah, I gotcha. Also @pukunui caught that I flubbed it on the giant sizes - it was a giant-size mistake. Heh. ENWorld is indeed a great community. We can sometimes be opinionated dingdongs, but we're experienced and well-intentioned opinionated dingdongs. ;)

D&D 5E (2014) How to Run Combats in a Cavernous Dungeon Without Alerting All NPC's?

Ok, had a chance to dive into your map, and I've marked it up... 1st, your scale of 1 square = 10 feet is off for this dungeon. If we used your scale then that big box in Area 12? That would be one stone giant. Clearly, that won't work. Instead, this map implies a scale of 1 square = 30 feet...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

I see. Yeah, we are reading Christian’s news very differently! I think you’re reading that bit about “no mention of the adventuring day” as pure semantics & that with the “pacing” advice there is effectively no substantive change here. Whereas I’m seeing the “creature budget” approach being...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

Huh. I am understanding the text of what you’re saying, but I’m not parsing how that’s possible. How, in the 2024 DMG’s encounter design rules (from what we’ve learned from Christian’s preview) do we get to 6-8 encounters per day without saying “6-8 encounters per day”?

Oh I was teasing you. :) I’m not a fan of those settings, but the fans I DO know…oh boy are they fans!

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

I think you’re suggesting that, say, a Medium 2024 combat will be worth, for example, TWO 2014 combats?

Do you have a keyed version? It will make talking about areas easier. Like 1 one line description, 2 one line description, etc?

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

I’m not sure I follow you. How does it wash out? If 6 x100 (or 3 x200) exhausts a party’s resources. And then we throw away the 6 and the 3 Are we still defining an encounter as 100 or 200. You see what I mean?

D&D 5E (2014) How to Run Combats in a Cavernous Dungeon Without Alerting All NPC's?

Can you share the map? One of the lenses that I examine a dungeon map through is "how sound might travel." For example, flowing water or a waterfall might mask all but the loudest of sounds. Thick stone can muffle sounds to be all but undecipherable echoes. Giant chanting in Area 13 might...

    D&D 5E (2014) Burning Hit Dice

I saw this idea pop up during 4e. It works until it doesn't. By that I mean that if you have a group of PCs without a magical healer, they are heavily reliant on Hit Dice for healing within the day. When you whittle down those healing resources (even if it's cool options like you describe)...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

I'm confused about what has changed. Because based on what Christian has shared here, something fundamental has to have changed, right? Before, to really threaten the party's resources you needed many encounters – around 6-8 encounters at the 2014 "moderate" difficulty level. This wasn't...

D&D General Scope of tiers and published adventures

I think that tier philosophy is one useful lens through which the scope of adventures can be evaluated, but it is far from the only one. A key thing missing is adventures involving very personal stakes, such as creation of a new spell, protection of a family member, discovery of one's missing...

D&D 5E (2014) What Do You Think is the Best 5E Book for DMs So Far?

Oh! That reminds me – when I'm creating monsters and I get stuck evaluating unusual special abilities, this thread has been quite helpful: So You Want to Build a Monster (a guide for DMs) I'd say the order I refer to resources when designing monsters is: A) My own creative sorcery B) Forge of...

D&D 5E (2014) What Do You Think is the Best 5E Book for DMs So Far?

Wow, never thought I'd see a link to Dandwiki that was actually well-thought out! So I meant it when I said it's a starting point. We are faaaaaaaaaar past that in our GMing "careers", so it completely understandable that we'd look back at the DMG and say "pff, that does nothing for me." Most...

D&D 5E (2014) What Do You Think is the Best 5E Book for DMs So Far?

I think the Monster Manual and Volo’s Guide to Monsters are getting warm. They have so many fun hooks imbedded in the monster lore. Really great way to jumpstart your creativity is looking up a monster you’re interested in running, or just flipping to a random page or two. I also use the (2014)...
