D&D 3.x Playing in a DND3E game with no magic items

Re: Re: Re: Re: Playing in a DND3E game with no magic items But the low level character will be doing a lot more damage. With the raging barbarian's AC a lowly 15, the low-level character can do some massive power-attacking. He's also going to do a lot more damage per hit -- probably almost...

Attn everyone: Fantasy world arms race experiment!

Ground rules I think that right off the bat you *must* state how many Shamans each side has relative to their total population. I'm assuming that they're first level in this round, naturally -- but how many are there? One per side? Two? Five? You can do a lot more with five than you can with...

D&D 3.x Playing in a DND3E game with no magic items

Re: Re: Playing in a DND3E game with no magic items Re my "magic items make the fighter" quote -- note that in a one-on-one battle, a fully-equipped 16th level fighter would most likely kick your 25th level Conan's ass. Up, down, right, left, and sideways into next week.

    Blocking Divination

Yes, Yes, and Yes. I hate Commune . . . unlike Piratecat, I don't think that "players should be rewarded when they ask the right questions". In my opinion, players should have to do a helluva lot more than just "ask the right questions" to unravel some puzzle or mystery. Unless you're a wussy...

    Tanglefoot Bags of DOOM

Yes, without any errata, TF bags are extraordinarily broken. It's a touch-attack weapon that gives -4 to dex, -2 to hit, AND, most importantly, makes the target move at half-speed . . . yep, that's *extremely* broken.

The more I read about D&D 3.5. the more...

Re: Re: Re: The more I read about D&D 3.5. the more... I will have to convert them?!?!!! Or what? Will Skip Williams come to my house and take away all my books? Will Monte Cook break in and molest my dog? Will Gary Gygax attack me with his +6 Dentures of Doom? The horror . . . the horror ...

The Knockback Feat (Or, if you just want combatants flying through the air . . .)

Fair enough. Using my system, you fighting your twin would have a maximum check of 9 feet (and that's if you roll a 20 and your twin rolls a 1 -- pretty damn rare), and throughout I've been making it so that you *always* round down . . . 9 feet would round down to 5 feet. Using my system, at...

D&D 3.x Playing in a DND3E game with no magic items

I'm of two opinions. First, stop whining. Nothing wrong with a low-magic 3E game, as long as your DM can adjust. CRs of various creatures will go up, and in general mages will outpace fighter-types more unless their spell selection is restricted. Second, your DM doesn't sound like he's...

DM seeks help in 'touchy' situation

You know, I thought this thread seemed familiar. It's a good rerun, but still . . . shees. Maybe he's just waiting for sweeps.

    Insight bonus -- pricing

Yeah, and Luck bonuses stack. You just keep those commandments rolling down the mountain, don't you? :D So it's impossible to create a magic item that made the wearer faster and quicker on his feat, and thus gave him a Dodge bonus to AC, right? Thank god we have you around.

Does D&D combat break the fantasy?

scarymonkey has clawed his way towards a good point ;P. Let's say Joe Warrior sneaks up behind our Hero and manages to put a knife to the back of his neck. He doesn't attack . . . he just puts the knife there and says to the Hero "Move, and you're dead!" Using typical 3E rules, our Hero...

[Rant] is D&D going the way of the CCG?

Damn. When I saw the thread topic, I was hoping it would be a rant about how so many of today's D&D players are whiny obsessed rules-lawyers, ever-searching for the Next Unstoppable Combo and truly upset when someone dares question The Official Rules. (Sound like MtG players, anyone?) (I still...

    Great white wyrm - DEAD

Your DM's mileage may vary on *that* one. 50gp for an item that gives you +20 to your next attack? Um, yeah. Right.

    Campaign Concern

Actually, it's a better idea to just use the DMG guidelines, and treat the PCs as just another monster. One 1st level guy = EL1 Two 1st level guys = EL2 Four 1st level guys = EL4 Eight 1st level guys = EL6 Yes, it's rough. Note that NPCs will generally have fewer resources than PCs...

    Campaign Concern

I confess that I'm VERY surprised by this. In a situation like this, the rogues would naturally use all of their sneak attacks against one or two foes -- probably the buffest fighter type, and maybe a mage. Did they just roll really poorly? Or did you foolishly have each rogue attack a different...

    (OT) Mugging/Revenge/Martial Arts

I'd go with an OA monk. The PHB monk just isn't really that effective, especially at lower levels.

    Insight bonus -- pricing

We're all going (roughly) by the Official 3E guidelines. The fact that it's a bonus that no one ever really gets, by spell or other magic item, makes it more valuable than the rules would account for, IMHO. 320,000gp is probably a little steep; thinking about it a little more, it'd probably run...

Defenders of Daybreak - campaign questions

My only question: What the hell kind of name is Raevynn? I mean, really. C'mon.

    Insight bonus -- pricing

Lots and lots and lots and lots and lots. A +4 armor bonus to AC runs at 16k. A +4 deflection bonus to AC runs at 32k. This is like an entirely new bonus that stacks with everything . . . making it a minimum of 32k in price just for that, and I'd charge more (since you ask). The +4 insight...
