Isn't the whole Complete X series a little... off?

I find complete arcane added nothing to existing core classes. It's the most unattractive and dispensible of the 3 books. At least complete divine added something useful to my campaign despite its bad editing and some overpowered feats/spells and PrCs.

Why is Plane Shift Clr 5, Sor/Wiz 7?

Because the cleric spell list is so underpowered that it needs a boost.

    Complete Arcane: Too Much Wu-Jen?!?

Agreed. Putting in crappy Draconic feats as an afterthought doesn't help the impression either.

    [Complete Divine] Stormrage any good?

This is an excellent spell way better than Polar Ray. Note this is a Divine Spell that is flashy and better than an equivalent arcane spell.

    Spell Mastery?

It was an "Escape from Alcatraz" adventure. I actually left strong hints for the wizard character it was an escape adventure. The player (and I) just didn't realise how weak Spell Master is and also how weak the wizard is without her spells. As it was an escape situation, there wasn't any...

    Spell Mastery?

I had a player take Spell Mastery because About half way through the adventure he suicided the character and played a cleric instead. It was just too hard. The problem is that Spell Mastery is too weak. By the time you need to use it the wizard is so crippled that you might as well suicide and...

Why Won't Some People Play Spellcasters?

When your party is getting smashed by the enemy and all you have are knocks and tounges prepared then you are less useful and worthwhile. Shame on you for not cheating and reading the module ahead of time in order to find out what spells to best prepare.

Why Won't Some People Play Spellcasters?

Surviving the first 5 levels is where I have to do the most fudging. You don't start playing at level 1? Even levels 5 - 8 need fudging. This is where monster saves and hitpoints ramp up but arcane caster levels are still too low to affect anything. 9th level onwards, is where I find I don't...

Why Won't Some People Play Spellcasters?

My players quickly found that damage dealing spells are terrible at low levels. Most of the time they're doing more damage with their crossbows than with damage spells. Which then leads to the inevitable question. Why am I playing a hamstrung class when I could be playing a...

Why Won't Some People Play Spellcasters?

This is where as a DM I hate arcane spellcasters. Somehow I feel obliged to fudge adventures just so that arcane spellcasters can have a fair go. I never do this even for rogues. It feels artifical and constrainting. Additionally it makes the players feel like an invalid where they know I am...

Why Won't Some People Play Spellcasters?

It's strange, my combat rounds are much more complicated than "I attack". It's more like "I tumble 10 feet behind the orc chief and trip him with my glaive then I take a 5 foot step back." or "I use my bluff skill to feint the ogre, then I take a 5 foot step to the left of the ogre so that...

Why Won't Some People Play Spellcasters?

They don't always have the time/money/exp to do that. Especially not at 1st level. Additionally scrolls and wands are terrible for storing offensive spells because of the minimum save DCs.

Why Won't Some People Play Spellcasters?

The quick answer is that arcane spellcasters are weak. You have to play them a certain way (ie min/max) or else they're useless. Who wants to play a class that takes a lot of time in customisation only to have them die in the first volley of kobold crossbow bolts? Who wants to play a class that...

    D&D 3.0/3.5 <> earlier eds. re : min-maxing

The question is, what is wrong with min/maxing? As long as all the choices are game rules valid and the game mechanic themselves are balanced, there is no reason to stop it. Min/maxing can be a tool to roleplaying. Having said that badly balanced rules have a negative impact on fun. Anyone...

Complete Arcane - What's in it!!

Would the evil super villain nerd be running Linux with plans of world domination through the Internet? *snort* :)

Complete Arcane - What's in it!!

Because the cleric spell list is so underpowered compared to the arcane spell list that it needs beefing up.

Mage Slayer and Pierce Magical [X]

They're not dumb feats. The designer's reasoning is that anything that nerfs arcane spellcasters is good. They should have gone further and made it so that all arcane spellcasters within 1000 feet of anyone with those feats drops dead instantly and all their items disintegrate.

    Magic Jar and the Tarrasque

The ruling is not RAW and doesn't make sense. Felix is right, if the wizard has access to SR then as part of the SR ability she can raise/lower it at will. If the wizard doesn't have access to SR then SR doesn't even come into the question. So which is it? Since Magic Jar doesn't give...

About spells that seem useless because of duration

How can it be used for combat purposes when the first use cancel's it's effects. Invisibility in its current form is useless for everything. Spider Climb changes makes even less sense than Invisbility changes. The changes are hardly consistent considering Levitate is better than Spider Climb in...

About spells that seem useless because of duration

Wizards have the best rogue and ranger abilties? When did wizards get 8 skill points/lvl with a broad based class skill list? Hide and Move silently is only a small part of the rogue's arsenal. Why is it that clerics have Chain Lightning, Horrid Wilting, Power Word: Kill etc then? A major...
